Hi Some where I have a set bought from Wistons many years a go, Interestingly this had an od 1/4 drive socket in it that fitted Meccano square nuts. Ah Wistons see my cat, those were the days. They used to sell some great items @ very good prices, really missed them when they shut up shop. |

Well it turned out OK in the end, I made a couple of mistakes which ruined the finish in places, but I am happy with it. I rounded the part that broke and the camera angle makes it look a lot longer, That turned out nice. Looks like a very aggressive square thread! And there is always more than one way to get the job done. I tend to use tips with a good positive top rake for all my general machining these days, and apart from form tools I try to avoid grinding HSS, it's just too messy!!!. My favourite tips are these DCMT 070204 with the ground/polished finish, they will machine anything, brass, aluminium, steel etc. and are very good on plastic especially Acetal. Ian Ian where did you get those particular dcmt inserts from if you dont mind me asking, thank you. |

Finally got fed up with the unwanted calls that seem to have increased recently, we went out last week & purchased a new set of 3 BT Premium phones for £80. These are the ones with 100% call blocker on, since installing them we haven't had a single unwanted call. You can go into the phones memory & it will show you the calls including the numbers of these unwanted numbers that it has stopped, recognised the usual suspect numbers that we usually get that have been stopped. Our old phones that we have had quite a number of years were due for an update really any way, this is the best £80 that we have spent in years. I now know what the sound of silence is like & very happy now. |
Thread: Why a round bed? |

Posted by Hollowpoint on 04/06/2019 17:15:59:
The little unimat sl uses 2 round rails for the bed, I'm supprised at how rigid this setup is for such a tiny lathe. I,ve always thought a larger lathe based on this design using newer technologies like linear bearings could produce a very good economical lathe. You could eliminate the need for gibs for example! How nice would that be? Edited By Hollowpoint on 04/06/2019 17:17:24 Wabeco still offer round bar bed lathes like the Unimat SL but much larger, besides there cast iron bed lathes as well. |
Thread: Which Qctp for mini lathe? |
03/06/2019 19:31:25 |
Just out of interest & not to be used normally i took 3 mm DOC ( 6mm off diameter ) on mild steel on my Sherline lathe, this was with ccmt 060204 carbide inserts. I was amazed with the Sherline that it could do this & left a very good finish indeed with no chatter marks on the material at all. This was also using one of the cheapo Chinese aluminium QCTP . |

There is a Toyo version of this lathe on Ebay at the moment for £380. |

The Record ML210 was also known as the Toyo, Sakai, Proxxon & finally Manix, all the same lathe. |

I use the A2Z post + the Chinese copy both made of aluminium on my Sherline lathe. A2Z are no longer made, i got my Chinese copy from Banggood for £27 with 4 tool holders & postage was quite quick as they are sent priority mail. They are not bad for small lathes up to a mini lathe i would say. But may be a bit light weight on a WM180 lathe & upwards, you may be ok on a WM180 with it providing you are more gentle with use on the lathe. Extra holders are also under £5 a go. |

I also use one of the cheap quick change tool posts from this supplier on the Sherline, this is a copy of the A2Z tool post that is no longer made & was popular on Sherlines. If you look on Youtube the A2Z tool post is used on a number of Sherlines. Again this tool post works fine on Sherlines for such a cheap price around £26 with 4 holders, with extra holders available @ just over £4 each. Again i have had no problems with this tool post on the little Sherline, probably a little fragile for the more larger much heavier lathes but great on Sherlines. I get the following inserts from Banggood, yes there a Chinese supplier but these inserts work great @ an even better price. Go to Banggood & put in the product id number. DCGT 0702-AKH01 @ £7.77 for 10 inserts product id 1089860. CCGT 060204 @ £7.43 for 10 inserts product id 1068569. DCMT 070204 @ £3.52 for 10 inserts product id 1081767. CCGT 060204 @ £4.00 for 10 inserts product id 1055821. I like the first inserts listed the best but the other 3 are also very good indeed, i also have around 12 insert holders with various inserts in them. Holders are from the same suppliers & have had no problems what so ever with the quality of the holders including insert boring bars. I use the 10 mm x 10 mm holders but you can use any holder from 8 mm up to 12 mm on the Sherline + i have the 6 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm, & 10 mm insert boring bars as well from this suppliers. |

I also bought a long bed Sherline lathe + a number of accessories from Kevin @ Millhill Supplies, i wanted something small for smaller work & to tie me over until i found what i was looking for in a larger lathe. I'd always been aware of Sherline over the last 40 years but just thought they looked like a very quirky lathe being very basic & with the motor towering above the machine, man was i surprised with this lathe after using it. This is deff a keeper even after i get another larger lathe, I can see clearly why they sell so many Sherlines around the world & considering how long they have been making basically the same machine all be it with upgraded mods which will also fit any Sherlines no mater when they were made. I don't regret for 1 second buying this little machine. Edited By Martin Hamilton 1 on 29/05/2019 14:55:50 |

I now have a Sherline lathe after owning a number of much larger lathes over the years. I must say Sherlines are certainly an underrated lathe, they punch well above there weight on what they can do & its accuracy. I use mainly carbide inserts these days on the Sherline but as well as HSS tools, the carbide inserts these days are very cheap from the right sellers & with carbide inserts you do away with grinding all together. I still have a grinder for HSS & other tools, i use inserts that are intended for steel & inserts intended for aluminium. The aluminium inserts work fantastic not only on aluminium but great on steel including silver steel, the steel inserts which are even cheaper than the aluminium ones also work good on aluminium & other metals. |
Thread: Buying a Reel of Bandsaw Blade |
27/05/2019 20:46:29 |
The silver soldered joint is probably better than welded blades as its done at a much lower temperature than the welded joint. Welded joints nearly always seem to be more brittle to me as the blades nearly always break at the welded joint & when you look at the break in the blade it appears to have a brittle look at the failed weld. |
27/05/2019 19:12:37 |
That is exactly the way i did my blade that is shown in the video. |
27/05/2019 19:06:13 |
I use 14 tpi blades on my metal cutting bandsaw, i broke the blade one weekend & needed to finish what i was doing quickly. I silver soldered the joint just to get the job finished, several years on the blade is still in use with no problems at all. I didn't just butt the joint but ground a bevel on both ends of the joint so there was a small splice joint. |

For getting a good finish even on silver steel in small lathes get yourself some of the aluminium carbide inserts that Jason show in his 1st picture. These inserts are fantastic on small lathes, they are unbelievably sharp so watch your hands on them. They work great on aluminium, brass & steel. Both tool holders & inserts are available from online sellers very cheaply & are good quality considering the low prices from the right sellers. I use nothing but these now on my little Sherline lathe & get a close to a ground finish even on steel. |

Thread: Advice on Choosing A Mini Lathe |
30/03/2019 22:53:04 |
Not sure if the Sherline is more a micro lathe, i can echo what has been said about how good the Sherline's are. It certainly punches well & truly above it's weight in my opinion, a lathe this tiny that has 40mm of travel on the tailstock & 100mm travel on the crossslide & 17" between centers with options to raise the center height to 3" if required with additional riser blocks. Good powerfull motors for a lathe this small that run cool with variable speeds from 70 rpm - 2800 rpm, i had been aware of Sherline's for more than 40 years but they never looked that interesting. How wrong i was until i bought a new one a couple of weeks ago along with 3.1" 3 jaw s/c chuck, 3.1" 4 jaw s/c chuck. 3.1" 4 jaw independent chuck, compound slide, fixed steady + various other trinkets. I was amazed at the level of work & accuracy this little lathe is capable of, i can use carbide insert tools & hss & achieve as good as ground finish off the tool on Mild steel, stainless steel, silver steel + brass & aluminium finish is unbelievable. The accuracy on turning parrallel is within .0001" after setting the head stock, the chucks are works of art. My Sherline 4 jaw s/c chuck runs within .001" run out, the lathe is also capable of taking some serious cuts when roughing down with no chatter. The adjustable back lash adjuster on the cross slide is also capable of reducing back lash to .001" - .0015", bearing in mind of course this is a very basic small lathe that has no power feed or powered screw cutting only manual screw cutting with the extra attachment. This lathe suited my needs these days for what i need to make so was ideal for me & am very happy indeed with this purchase. |

Martin Are you still looking for a lathe? I nearly buckled a couple of weeks ago to call you about the Compact 5 but changed my mind. I was going to get a just about new Wabeco 4000 for £1125 but realised it is hardly any bigger than the Compact 5. Regards Barrie Barrie, sent you an email. Regards Martin.
