I took delivery of my Ender 3 on Thursday and like Pete Rimmer found it required a 0.5mm shim behind the motor mount to align the Z axis screw. I also adjusted the Y axis carriage wheels slightly to alleviate some slight play, apart from that it went together very easily with some care to set everything square. All in all a very good machine for the money, I'm very happy with the quality of the prints and look forward to many happy hours playing with it.

No. I haven't done this on your model, but I have come across this method of fitting gears and pulleys many times on various machines in the past.

I don't think anybody has suggested Michael hammers directly on the shaft with a steel hammer !

You wont be hitting it hard enought to do any damage. ( at least I hope you wont ! ) they should enter with a light tap.

Michael, I wouldn't worry about the roll pins at this stage, if it all comes apart as I think it will you should be able to tap the roll pins back in with a soft drift. Even a mild steel drift would not damage them as they should be hardened. I doubt you will need new ones unless you damage them in some way, but I can't see that happening!

Michael, have you got or can you borrow a puller large enough to fit the pulley?

If you can, fit that and push on the partially unscrewed centre bolt, I think you will find

the pulley will slide off the shaft. Don't worry about the cap it will come off with the pulley.

You may find you have to replace the bolt with a longer one to get the pulley to clear the end of the shaft.

Back in the day when I repaired chandeliers and light fittings I came across all sorts of threads.

Most fitting tended to be Brass thread , 9/16 x 26 BSB is 14.2mm OD so as Jason says is a very likely candidate.

Electrical conduit threads are based on american national pipe pitches, so 1/4 NPT would be .540" OD (close to 14mm ) but is 18t.p.i which sounds a bit coarse for the OP.

Later fittings were mostly Metric, again as Jason says 1mm pitch being common. Alth'o being from the US I would think that less likely.

It just proves what a nice friendly group the majority are here on the forum, it's a shame it has to be spoilt by the views of one individual.

Downside is it has to be heat hardened at 425F for one hour.

At the moment it's a toss-up between JB's idea or increasing to 3/16.

Unfortunately Duncan there is no space between the boiler and the cladding on the Tich, I don't think LBSC believed in insulation .

Hi, I,m currently helping a friend progress with building a Tich loco he started 40yrs ago. We are close to assembling his boiler parts but have got stuck trying to source some thick walled (5/32 OD x aprox 1/16 ID) copper tube for the hollow stay. I can find some 22g but as this has to be threaded 5/32x40 it only leaves 12thou at the root -- not good for a boiler stay

I know it was available 'cos I have it in my own Tich boiler (which was not built by me)

Any suggestions where I might get some would be much appreciated.

Neil, as Nylon 6 is hygroscopic would that really work as a steam turbine? I guess it would be fine if run on air though.

_______Need to double-check, but the absence of error when cutting parallel (tbc) suggests that the headstock and ways are true making the cross-slide chief suspect.

SOD, Do I get the impression you are turning your test bar between centres (as in tbc above) in which case it wont tell you if the headstock is out of square only if the tailstock is in line with the headstock.

Please forgive me if i've missed something as i have only skimmed through these posts, but

I don't recall seeing anyone mention to check that the headstock is correctly aligned to the bed.

If there is any misalignment it would surely face either concave or convex. Perhaps it's worth checking?
