Thread: Centec 2 vertical head
13/11/2017 11:46:13
It's all in my head Mark lol. I've cut a 1 1/4" plate to rough diemensions chucked it up and turned it down to a press fit I've also roughed the bore . I'll post up some more photos .Photos are in my albums now . I'm not the best at explaining 😉.

Made a start on the spindle . I'm not going down the thick wall pipe/tube route . I laid my hands on a chunk of stainless steel of some sort (looks like it was an old roller ) because it has a 1" bore (handy) so I turned it down to press fit inside the the 3" pipe I'm using plus epoxy glue wink.

I have a question ,I have two tapered roller bearings . One's a Timken slightly smaller 56 mm od but a better quality bearing than the other one which is 62 mm od .Will it matter if I put the Timken on the bottom ..

I spend quite a lot of time thinking about the sequence of machining operations, and then still go and make a right fiddlers elbow out of it.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one ,I'm terrible for overthinking things then I confuse myself wink

Dull end mills rub more

Firstly are you end mills sticky sharp ,what speed are you running . I'm new the world of milling also , the guys on here will soon have you sorted .

Makes sense Jim , coming out the end of the cut was when the end mill groaned a bit . Should I be using a 2/3 flute for cutting channels .

Good stuff! When you make 2 more try machining as a pair so that they match - useful then for holding longer bars needing support at both ends.

Hi John ,

I've enough material to make another two which as you suggested will be a pair .

Sean , Nice work . May I suggest you now put a nominal 3mm x 3mm slot along the full length of the bottom of the Vee in order to allow dirt and dwarf somewhere to go and also to allow any angular work to sit fully on the sides of the Vee , and so maintain an accurate register . Trevor

Thanks Trevor ,

That was my next move along with a slitting saw cut along the bottom of the vee .

Made myself a wee vee block and I'm planning a couple more out of the same piece of material . I also learned how important setting up a work piece up before machining . Also used a carbide end mill for the first time today (very impressive ) . I cut the square channel on the side using a 4 flute ,is this good practice or should I have used a 2/3 flute . Overall I'm happy with the end result . The Centec2 keeps on impressing ,I was taking what I thought were big cuts for this small mill ,the only thing stopping taking bigger cuts was the operator .

Getting a tad impatient now to get the vertical up and running . wink 2

Don't know why my photos are always like this on here ....

Thanks Rainbows ,I have quality bearings ,the biggest has an od of 62mm and the smaller has an od of 55mm I think .I don't think 4mm is enough meat I'd rather a bit more . I can't remember off hand what the capacity of 4 jaw is ,but the max capacity of 4 jaw will dictate how long my spindle will be .

This is what I'm planning ,hopefully with adjustment on the vertical axis .The collets I'll be using will be ER32 and MT2

Appreciate I could go and buy one Hopper , where's the fun in that 😉 I bought the mill and lathe to make things . I'm in no hurry ,I'm steady working away making other parts for mounting the head . My biggest problem is that I'm an information juncky and at this precise moment my head is buzzing 😁.One thing I'm changing is the length of the spindle .

The spindles the easy part ...well I'm hoping it will be 😁. I have nice piece of oak I could use for a steady.

I'm attempting to build a vertical head for my Centec2 horizontal mill . My thoughts are ,seeing as I'm going to all this trouble I might as well try and use beefy materials because for it's size the Centec 2 is a beefy little machine . For the spindle I'm planning 80mm od steel .I need to bore this out for the spindle bearings and draw bar . My question is , The round bar I'm using will be 80mm x 250mm long is this too much for a 6" 4 jaw ,I don't have any kind of steady rest . The through bore hole isn't critical ,but the seats for the bearings are and need to be bang on .

Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017)

Hells bells. I'm just back from the scrappie who paid me £128 for that pile of old pipes. 35kg @ £3.40 for the grungy old copper and 8kg @ £1.10 for the short length of lead pipe. There was me about to drive about 3 times the distance to chuck it in a skip. Apparently it would have ended back at that scrappie anyway. Stakes are raised - where is that tool catalogue....

Could you mill out the rectangular hole a bit wider on the narrowest side perhaps . Nice mill .

Thanks everyone ,most helpful information given . Just need to get going with this vertical head I'm in the middle of making . Dovetails cut today so some headway made . smiley
