Thread: Holding large milling cutters in an R8 spindle
30/06/2018 17:36:16

There is a R8 collet which will take either 25m or 1" dia cutters can't remember which, but I don't like them have seen too many break under decent cuts, go for ER 40 R8.

Don't leave cast iron till the following day to clean up, don't wash the lathe down with suds, don't use an airline to clean the lathe. Dry brush and hoover it up then wipe down with dry cloth, I think that's what the foreman told me.

A hottie in the ear is amusing, the smell of burning hair and jumping about trying to get it out, had many down the front of the overall and on the tongue.

Thread: ward 2A lathe

To adjust the clutch the gearbox has to rebuilt and ready to run, it's a simple case of withdrawing the plunger and turning the adjusting ring as if tightening a nut, return the plunger to fit in nearest hole then move the clutch lever to engage the clutch, if there is no click as it engages the clutch then its too slack, if the lever wont engage the clutch its too tight. You will soon understand it when you try. Have to go out now but will return later if you have any questions.

28/04/2018 09:48:45

The two tapped holes are for jacking the oil pump out for removal, the clutch that over heated is the high speed clutch and if the oil level drops or fails this is the first item to suffer. Ward made very good capstan lathes, you may have a mix of gearbox parts 1A, 2A or 3A, the nicest machine to work on were the 7A and 10A, 2" and 3" cap, from memory I think.

I did have an action plan for my retirement, in Jan 2015 I gave notice that I would be reducing my hours to 30 a week come my 65th birthday in March but low and behold 2 weeks before that date I had a heart attack in work, blue lights, very scary but I survived by having three stents fitted and in six weeks back to work all fine in body, not so the mind but that's another story. Come March 2016 I dropped to twenty one hours a week and continued to work but at the end of 2017 I had had enough and gave three month notice which took me through the winter months and into spring.

As well as a workshop in the garden I now have a 12 x 8 wooden machine shop containing Myford S7, Chinese miller and 6x4 saw, vertical and horizontal linnisher welding kit and pillar drill, so I won't be bored.

Some would say "haven't you had enough of making things?" no I haven't, I loved my job whether it was a small fixture made in three hours or a ten person assembly line made in three months, it all starts with a vision in your mind and progresses into a thing of beauty. (to me anywaysmiley)
