I have just started to rebuild a Matchless 650 been in a shed since 69, it is rotten but it will give me plenty to do, only downside there was Bantam stuck to it so I had to buy the two, oh well.

Thread: 'Threadless' leadscrew |
08/03/2020 14:08:03 |
Uhing units were cheaper way of winding wire onto reels used as a traverse unit left and right but could only be used on light wire as lack torque proved an issue, input speed was constant with variable pitch adjustment and no need for reverse. We tried a couple but not man enough for heavy work and stayed with left/right leadscrews or leadscrews with fwd/rev clutches.

Thread: Simple drawing package |
19/02/2020 19:14:29 |
I am not hijacking the post just echoing Peter's question................ I would really like to find a simple 2D package, I used Turbocad over twenty years ago and still have the three floppy disc somewhere, apart from it crashing very frequently I was quite happy with it I have tried Qcad and some others recommended by others on here but can't get my head around them. Thread: 1/4" BSF v 1/4" CEI |
04/02/2020 08:29:25 |
1/4 BSF and 1/4 CEI although not the same thread are compatible and fit together nicely, I have never had a problem, your best friend is the pitch gauge when it comes to British bikes, only a few months back I was caught out making a rear spindle for a Douglas, it looked 26 tpi to my eye but 'twas not, it was 24 tpi, live and learn. Not all makers put BSW threads in alloy, BSF was popular too, in my opinion best supplier of CEI nuts and bolts is Nooky's Nuts, always good quality and for taps and dies Tracy Tools are hard to beat.

Thread: What a sad day for the British motorcycle industry. |

I have a couple of Norton machines in my collection and am a member of the Norton Owners Club and it does sadden me to see the end (again) of this once great motorcycle manufacturer and race winner. Colin |
Thread: High blood pressure ! |
29/01/2020 09:11:29 |
Five years ago last Monday and just short of my 65th birthday I suffered (what I know to have been) a heart attack in work and blue lights took me to hospital, in through the back door straight into the Lab and they put three stents in my knackered arteries and I am still here to tell the tale. I take my pills like a good boy and I stopped smoking saving me £3.5k a year, I am now retired and enjoy fettling in the workshop or riding my twenty odd bikes, but not at the same time. Life is good so look after yourselves everyone. Colin |

Thread: Surplus subjects learnt at school. |
20/07/2019 07:27:45 |
Well I failed the 11+ and went to secondary modern school as they were called back then and ended up in the lower streams as people refer to them, had four hour lessons of woodwork, craft or gardening, a few maths and english lessons and of course Welsh, no Latin or Greek for us. I really hated school, I had/have a severe stammer which everyone found quite funny including the teachers so was always the fool in the class, but I got through the four years and got myself a place on a pre- apprenticeship course at a local college of further education, end of year got myself a choice of four apprenticeships, picked the toolmaker one as recommended by a neighbour. Failed G1 and ended up on MECP course, which my lectures thought I was more suited to and so it turned out I have been a toolmaker for 52 years, never been out of work, always earned good money. and always loved the job which is quite important. My Myford is used for making parts or the tooling to make the parts for the motorcycles I rebuild, it may get used for other thinks when I am too old to ride. Colin |

Thread: Wickman tangential screwcutting tool |
06/02/2019 20:22:27 |
A very clever multi spindle machine, 6 and 8 spindle up to 2 1/4" capacity with stopper spindle, pick up/back de burr, high speed drilling, tapping, back chasing, threading a truly well made and wonderful machine. Far better machine than a Cone or Griddley, quieter and easier to work on. Wickman made general tooling so this tool may not be multi related. Lots of video on youtube. |
