Thread: Over wintering Motorcycle battery .
14/12/2020 17:21:30

I no longer motorcycle all year round now, in fact to my shame not much at all these days.

I take the battery off the bike, charge it up and monitor it, charging as required.

Is it a good idea to connect it to a bulb to slowly drain it, then charge again and repeat. OR connect my Accumate automatic charger to monitor and top up as the bulb drains it.

A continuous cycle of deplete and top up. Is this a safe set up to leave to get on with it for the winter.

I look forward to comments and advice. Thank you.

Thread: Ball ended handle - how to
22/11/2020 09:48:48

Hello Jim,

Thor's option one worked well for me . I tapped and counter bored the small ball allowing the tapered shaft to enter the ball, creating a truly undetectable joint. This avoids the need to machine a shouldered joint which may not be truly concentric and give the 'one piece illusion away'.

One thing which doesn't get mentioned much is the need to allow for the swing of the ball turner to avoid conflict with the chuck.

I made one for my tool post, it's a pleasure to use. You will enjoy making it. Ball turning can become addictive.

Thread: Getting an ML7
12/08/2020 15:27:00

Hello Pete,

My first lathe was a ML7R, bought new when I was in my early twenties. It cost about a grand back then and that didn't include a motor as I recall. Bought primarily for motorcycle work it served me faithfully for many years and did all I asked of it. I started off with just a self centering three jaw chuck and added extras as jobs demanded and funds allowed.

I am sure you will be pleased and maybe surprised at what it will be capable of.

Have fun.

Thread: Painting on old galvanize
04/08/2020 16:35:33

Thank you all for your ideas and advice, success hinges on that first coat of primer . I will gen up and make a selection.

Regards,

Adrian.

I am considering stripping off the old paint on my up and over garage door, it comes away in ribbons revealing the old unbroken original galvanizing.

My thoughts are, thoroughly clean galvanize, etch prime, undercoat, top coat.

Is this the way to go? Any recommendations for best paint system welcomed.

Thank you.

Thread: Warco Minor mill/drill
28/07/2020 12:09:25

Hello Andy, I have a Warco Minor, the round column can be a pain but there are work arounds. A DRO on the quill is

a must. Over all I am happy with it . It is solid and I have done some useful work with it. The build quality is better

than some later offerings. Being able to swing the head around can have its advantages when working on a large

job. Go for it.

Thread: How to stop scam phone calls for good?
21/07/2020 13:03:51

The call guardian lady asks callers to state their name , press # and wait to be connected, so scammers could still

potentially get through to your mum Ian.

Thread: Damp proofing floor
11/06/2020 15:47:33

Sealing the concrete floor will hold the moisture in it at bay. However in so doing, another problem may raise its ugly head . Condensation!!

The unsealed concrete surface can absorb and hold moisture from the atmosphere, releasing it back when conditions allow.

I painted my garage floor with floor paint, it looked great in British Racing Green. Come the winter I had my own indoor swimming pool. It cost more to strip it all off than the paint cost in the first place.

Thread: Centre finding
24/04/2020 07:42:50

Hello Cliff,

This sounds like it may be back lash in the lead screw . Not a problem in itself . Having established the edge position carry on winding the lead screw in the same direction to take you to centre . Don't change direction. All should be well .Hope this helps.

Thread: Scam alert

I had that one pgk. About a year ago there was a warrant out for my arrest, quite persistent too. Just ignore, do nothing.

These low lifes prey on the vulnerable.

A while ago, maybe earlier this year (could be a bit longer) a member posted a picture of a very simple but pleasing model racing car, made from odds and ends.

I would like to make something similar but have been unable to find the picture.

Can anyone , or indeed the maker point me in the right direction please.

Thank you.

Thread: To pin, or not to pin
13/11/2019 17:02:26

A few years back to reassure myself of the strength of Loctite I assembled a large metric (20mm) nut and bolt using high strength thread lock.

Bolt head in vice ring spanner on nut and try to undo. Very impressed it will not let go. Cleanliness is all important. It also takes considerable heat to break down.

Have faith.

Thread: Installation of a Myford (or any machine tool)
06/11/2019 17:29:30

004.jpg005.jpgI too am tall and also went down the paving slab route plus spacer/feet. I used inverted coach bolts settled in depressions in steel discs. All free standing on bedded slabs. One bolt/spacer is adjustable for levelling/stability. It works a treat and my lathe is at a very comfortable height. Level the slabs carefully.

That's great Andrew. Very pleased to hear you will be back.

Hello Andrew, I have not seen the post in question, I gather someone is upset because yours is bigger than theirs!

sad.

I too have always enjoyed reading your posts and will miss your contributions. You can see from the above responses that you will be very much missed, so please stay.

I hope you will.

Kind regards,

Thread: Myford Super 7 Top Slide Base - Alternatives?

I wonder why it has cracked ? Are the thrust pads present and correctly installed in their respective holes? They are handed and easy to fit incorrectly.
