Thread: gear for a thread dial
22/11/2016 23:46:18

I know of someone that used a cheap plastic gear for a thread dial as it takes little load and the pukka gear was offered as a 'special' at about ten times the price of the plastic alternative he used.

Thread: Milling Slots
21/11/2016 11:21:33

Initially more narrow than required finished size, then clean up the slot sides to size. That is if all other tnings are satisfacory - support, rigidity of machine, tool quality, axes tightened down, etc

Thread: motor/poles
19/11/2016 22:56:50

Power is proportional to torque multiplied by rpm.

So halving the speed requires double the torque for a given power output. Motor speeds are roughly proportional to the frequency supply for induction motors, so the speeds quoted above are applicable to 50Hz supplies, but not for our friends 'across the pond' with 60Hz leccy.

Thread: Motor?
19/11/2016 14:14:17

Fuses are a possibility, but so are the safety interlocks. Or perhaps you have not moved the motor speed control back to minimum speed?

Thread: Casting Filler?
19/11/2016 14:08:05

If that is the same crew as supplied Raglan with surface coatings, don't bother. They only supply to industry, fail to respond to emails, etc. Basically don't want to know, or hear from, individuals. Car body filler is the best bet. Used by many for years and years.

Thread: Soldering PCB
16/11/2016 16:33:10

Start at the beginning. Are you a regular solderer or learning? Maybe tin the components first?

Thread: Myford VM-F milling mach.....
14/11/2016 13:25:05

without a w/diagram this machine is junk....

With a statement like that, those with a wiring diagram, or are sharp enough to be able to work it out, will be offering scrap value in their droves.

I, for one, would offer scrap value, even though I have never seen one.

Thread: Scary stuff you can buy on the net
14/11/2016 13:00:13

Scary things on epay? Anyone can buy a lathe or milling machine. That can be scary, or downright dangerous, for some. There might even be a few on this forum that are in that category. As stated above, it is usually the person using the item who is the danger. Perhaps far more important is the likes of monsanto and bayer selling frankenstein genetic mutations and nerve agents, to be applied by all and sundry (as well as in agriculture/horticulture industries).

Thread: Magentic stand for DTI?
14/11/2016 12:50:20

You won't magnetise cast iron too easily. Most things need to be 'stroked' or 'rubbed' against a magnet, so the usual clamp type magnetic stand (or even a magnetic table) will impart little magnetism to the item on which it acts.

Stop worrying about something that is likely not a problem. Demagnetising the occasional item is usually fairly straightforward.

Shouldn't this be in Albums ?

A good sense of humour, Hacksaw. But should you not be in the 'tools' section only?smiley

Not sure where some might want to put me (for not making a Status entry), mind!

Singles have been better for me in the last couple of days.  A fiver for a pile of LPs but 25 for some singles.  I only wanted to get them out of the way, anyway!

Most record cleaners use, or used, IPA as the solvent. My local 'vinyl' dealer initially washes in a mild detergent, then gives them a final cleansing with a record cleaner containing isopropyl alcohol.

Thread: cheap digital vernier calipers.
13/11/2016 14:25:02

let's do Monsieur Vernier the courtesy of capitalising his name.

Let's also know that there are ttwo types of noun - proper and common.. Nor do adjectives require capitalisation.

A straight edge is a curve of infinite radius

Absolutely, but in crass advertising gimmicks, that might not be a good move. Same as a circle being a polygon. Very few know that to define a square needs four equal sides and only one right angle.

Very few recognise, or even know, that a battery must comprise of more than one unit; inarticulate beekeepers refer to different size hive boxes with incorrect nomenclature - calling one size a 'super' but it likely being used as a 'brood' box, orceven vice versa

There are lots of other scenarios where units are mixed, etc. Just not good enough for precision in any particular discussion. Accuracy and precision are another pair of misused words.

Dumb journalists who don't know the difference between MW and MWh, convert approximate measurements in metres to an exact conversion to the nearest inch (or even foot) in Imperial, etc, etc.

All this makes no odds. There is no such thing as a digital vernier. Using someone else's mistake to claim an incorrect answer in an exam is right, will not cut much ice with the examiner!

12/11/2016 14:38:26

called as per arc do in their catalogue.

How amazingly easy it is to corrupt the english language! Next we will have curved straight edges?smiley

I presume arc do not offer, for sale, a vernier caliper? So possible misrepresentation to catch the attention of those that really wanted a vernier scale?

But, I suppose, my analogue clocks still have digits painted, or printed, on the clock dial..... but they are still analogue.

12/11/2016 14:07:27

Question: Do you mean digital or vernier? They are not the same!smiley

Thread: Hello from a newbie - and questions about a vertical milling slide
12/11/2016 14:04:08

Your methodology is 'near enough' for manysmiley. However, after the initial lining up against the chuck, it would be far better, for accuracy of better than perhaps half a mm, to 'fine tune' using an appropriate dial guage. That 'half mm' assumes you get it as close as a 1/4 mm on one mounting and a 1/4 mm the other way, on the next time of mounting.smiley

Thread: Centec 2C Vertical Head

There is likely a drawing on the yahoo centec forum site.

Siphoning petrol (It was mine, not a misspent youth) I got a taste of it.

Consider yourself luc

ky that your mistake only led to tasting it. Had you sucked it into your respiratory tracts the results may well have hospitalised you as a serious case, or worse!

today

As I may have posted on here previously - 'today' only means for your small group of outlets. Other groupings could have been before 'today' or may not occur until a week or three or more in the future. No telling, so people need to watch for offers for their particular areas.

Thread: Can these motors be ran via a VFD
09/11/2016 15:42:39

No coment on the motors, but I would point out that everyone with a VFD is likely (or able) to run their motor at either raised or reduced frequency. Motors are cearly designed and are set up for optimal operation at a particuar Hertz value. Anything different and the motor efficiency will be reduced (assuing the designer got it right!). It is all based on magnetic field saturation and several other factors, such as power dissipation within the windings and cooling supplied. Oh, and the power output, of course!

Electric motors have a long life expectancy and if operating continuously, will consume a great deal of energy which has to be paid for. The cost of a motor in those circumstances is chicken feed compared to the lifetime running costs.

Hence some simple rules when using a VFD, such as maximum speed rating for the motor components (and any item it may drive - such as lathe chucks) and minimum speed for any given load (for cooling purposes) -along with a maximum run time or intermittent run factor..
