Jason is correct, it was the thread on the arbour screwed onto the boring head that was coming loose. Luckily it didn't happen enough to stop me completing the job but I had to take a lot more time than I wanted. I guess I need to look at grinding the two hss tools that I have for the boring head. To be fair the supplied tools were tips brazed onto the shanks and seem to be very well made and it was only the orientation that made things tricky.

Chris B, you could (in fact you have to) raise the work piece above the bed to protect both tool and bed but you still have the same problem and it isn't possible to enter a work piece from below the table (as far as I know ?).

I recently purchased a boring head from Arc, it has turned out to be a great purchase and has already paid for itself, however I did come across one issue which has puzzled me, as follows.

I wanted to enlarge a hole in a sheet of plastic (perspex I think), the sheet was too large to be held in any way on the lathe cross slide so the mill was the only machine able to perform the task. The problem is that all of the tools that come with the tool are for an anti-clockwise rotation. My mill will and did run in reverse in order to achieve the desired result but I had to take very small cuts to prevent the head unscrewing from the R8 arbour.

Apologies if I have been a muppet but am I missing something here?

Hopper I am with you on that and we might also be able to sort out any concerns that he has, unless of course they are genuine short comings with the lathe.

Asking someone what they found wrong with their new purchase is company bashing?? If you read all of the thread you will see both positive and negative remarks about several companies. In the mean time it might be that we can help Jack sort out whatever the perceived issues are. I have a Chester DB10 that needed a lot of fettling but now it is a very good lathe with real accuracy.

Thanks for replying Neil and Berty, sorry for my impatience, it has just arrived this morning .

One thing I have seen for myself is that this virus seems to be very infectious it infects people so easily, the other thing I have seen is that the outcome will vary a great deal. The general health of the newly infected person does make some difference, as do other factors such as gender and general fitness level, it also seems to be more serious for non European people and of course some elderly people.

I would agree that we are a long way away from breathing a sigh of relief, this is the time the virus will catch those that believe that it is safe to go back to doing normal things and that could cause a second wave or spike in the reported cases.

Has anybody else not yet received Junes magazine? I know a few people that have got there June mag already but I have not received mine?

Just a quick update.

I have been pulled back from the front line at my hospital. It has been a very demanding and stressful period but I have been lucky and am currently healthy and able to post this message.

I would like to express my gratitude to all of those that passed on messages of support, it really does make it easier knowing that people are grateful for the work being done. I just hope that there will be no further spikes or prolonged cases of covid 19 and wish all of you good health.

Thank you speedy, I am not interested in making or taking honey, I just have a fondness for bee's that I can't explain, I will do anything I can to help them out, I have lots in and out of the garden so hopefully a couple of these bamboo type things will help em out.

I love bees, but I don't know enough to consider keeping them, also when I looked on line the cost of a hive is pretty steep.

Am I right in thinking I will be helping out by just hanging some of those bamboo looking things up which wild bees will then use?

If my memory serves me correctly (and it may well not do) I was taught that only course files should be used on soft material and then to use a strip of emery cloth supported by the file, getting less course as nearing the correct size. I do remember using chalk but I am almost sure that was when draw filling, but I might be talking out of the wrong end, it was a long time ago.

Thanks for the replies, that would explain the nipples being full of grease then.

I will re-grease the spindle bearings and use oil on all the other parts, once again, many thanks.

Can I just ask for some advice regarding maintaining my Boxford model c and keeping it in good condition.

I was of the opinion that the lubricating nipples were there to get oil into the various bearings. I recently tried to inject some oil into the nipples to ensure everything was ok, however the nipples appeared to be blocked, so I unscrewed the main the nipples in the head and discovered they were full of grease.

So do I use grease or oil to lubricate the main bearings and the counter shaft bearings?

Brilliant it is still imported, my order will go out this evening.

John your bang on mate, it was Dentyne, now you have named it I remember it, lovely stuff, must google and see if it's still available.

One of my favourites was a chewing gum, I can't remember the name of it but, the chewing gum itself was pink in an oblong shape and tasted hot and maybe cinamon? The wrapper was red.

A day full of mixed emotion, firstly extreme joy as we have had a delivery of 3m masks, that is a fantastic step forward and lifted all of our spirits. It didn't last long, at 11:00 we went out of the ward to line the corridor and hold a minutes silence in memory of our colleague Brian who sadly died from covid 19. After lunch a personal lift for me as I managed to get IV access in a very poorly patient, sadly a few hours later it proved to be too little, too late. I actually went out at 8pm to clap, I expected to be one of a very small number, the whole damn street was out. A day with both ups and downs. Please maintain your social distancing as we did have a dilemma this afternoon with who should get ventilation and who will have to wait a bit longer for another one to become free.

Looking at the puller I would suggest that you unscrew the bolt completely then put it back in at the bottom (upside down) and then the top of the three legs can be used on an internal bearing.
