Thread: Helping young people |

I don't think so. Andy has a good point, but in our case the recruits are more likely to be drawn from the recently retired. Geoff
And why is that ? Perhaps it's a hobby that one grows into with the years. It requires a lot of spare time and is relatively expensive. The only real result being of personal satisfaction, in the creation of something. I think there are young people who are genuinely interested, just not as many as there once was. Other interests have also appeared on the scene, which simply didn't exist before.

Bob Schools haven't done anything engineering (as in machining etc) related for decades - certainly not when I was at school in the 80s. However, stuff like robotics, software, 3D printing, laser cutting is popular with some younger people. And those are the skills that the engineers of today and tommorow need. If you go to a robotics event rather than a model engineering show you would see plenty of younger people. A younger person would be far more excited about building a drone than a model loco - and that is normal. Andy That's a very pertinent point you make Andy. Maybe we're a dying breed Similar to wheelwrights and bodgers

Hello Philip, Can't help with your query, but at least you're bumped back up. I'm sure someone will be along shortly who can answer. Daniel

Thread: Bevel ? |
03/01/2018 00:01:57 |
Well ... Thank you Micheal and Brian for the links. Does it help ? Not sure and still digesting. For all practical purposes it would seem that the terms are largely interchangeable, but Brian's link casts a serious doubt. There would appear to be quite succinct differences in their definitions. Not intending to troll, but I love these subtle differences in our vocabulary. Daniel

Thank you all for the input, which demands some digestion. It's the old hole /pit question all over. Cooking children's dinner at the mo', but will digest. Thank you all

Perhaps a semantic question, but could anyone elucidate as to the difference between a chamfer and a bevel ? It's probably not important, but has been bothering me of late. Daniel

Offering help in return for payment is the foundation block of commercial enterprise. Trying to see that differently to what it is, is a total delusion. |

I recently bought an 8oz bottle of red marking fluid from RDG. Works brilliantly and was around £16. They also have a blue version. |

Hello Otley, I bought Warco's GH1322 a couple of years ago. I must say that I'm generally very happy with it. There's no secret that these machines are made to a price; that's how the likes of me can afford one. Yes, it has a few little bemoans, but nothing that impedes it from performing as was promised. Can't have a Rolls for the price of a Mini, but that doesn't stop the Mini from performing well and being very popular. |

I think I might have to have one of those ceremonies in the shed next New Year. Maybe two cans of beer and a ripe mango will substitute for rice cakes and a tangerine? So well put . . . I do conduct this ceremony (Beer, that is), at the end of almost every day. The celebration is centred around thanking the tools and overall workshop, for having performed the tasks asked of them. I love my tools Best, Daniel

I have an offcut of polished granite, from the undertaker's scrap heap. It's far more accurate than me. It was free and can easily be replaced if necessary Best, Daniel

I think Facom are quite good; but, will always come a poor second to Snap-On. That is however an opinion, not a fact. Happy New Year Daniel
