I've just asked Google what a split infinitive might be (malicious or otherwise), and had to give up. I couldn't even understand their defintion. . This one is pretty good, Daniel **LINK** http://www.bristol.ac.uk/arts/exercises/grammar/grammar_tutorial/page_28.htm It includes some reasonable examples. MichaelG.
Many thank's for the link Michael. That really does help. (that does really help My apologies for the delayed response, but I had an unplanned trip to hospital.

P.S. Yes I probably am getting an irritable old git, but I do seem to enjoy life all the same. Andrew, You keep threatening to get one, but have you actually got around to doing it ?

Ok, I have to confess. I've just asked Google what a split infinitive might be (malicious or otherwise), and had to give up. I couldn't even understand their defintion. Hey ho, survived this far without it |

I hope that no-one ends up concluding that the best club for old gits is made from 2x4 with a 6" nail in the end? Neil
I have the distinct impression that some on here regard that as the best club for the young! I'm (Im, im, i'm,etc), a mere nip of a lad at 51 1/2. Perhaps a positive aspect to threads such as this, is that it stimulates some resetting, and reminding, of good forum form. An example being that from Mike Poole earlier on. Nothing wrong with a bit of banter, but remaining thoughtful to others.

That's what I love about this forum. Every day is a learning day. |

At the risk of demonstrating, once again, my ignorance; is that level of precision even possible outside of a sterile, clean room environment ? I would hasard that holding the thin end in one's hand, for a couple of minutes, would soon rectify the difference. Your project sounds interesting though (re the Harley), hope you post some photos. |

BUT, this forum is not the platform to compete with those amongst us, who have struggled, in various ways, with the written word. There are probably such forums around, but this one is supposed to be focused on engineering. After all, language is only a means of communicating ones thoughts, etc to another. The last thing this forum community should want, is intimidating other worthwhile members, and beginners seeking assistance, from joining in, because they have not had the benefit of that wonderful grammar school education. Not going to edit post, but please receive it in the spirit with which it is posted. |

I didn't respond because I live in France. Same here. Anywhere near Perpignan? Russell Hi Russell, I live near Limoges, unfortunately.
However, I am often in Port Leucate, as a friend of mine keeps his boat there. Next time I'm going down, I'll send you a message, and we could possibly meet up. All the best, Daniel

Hi Jason, Point taken. "Seek and ye will fynde", is an expression that has been calling out to me from the beginning of this thread, though. It was clear from the outset that the op was hell bent on examining his purchase(s), to an extent that he would be almost certain to find something amiss. My workshop is equipped almost entirely of Chinese imported machines. I have no delusion. One has to reflect on the price one is paying, and accept that certain compromises must be made. If he had followed earlier advice, and just simply got started on his first project, instead of searching for what must be wrong, he may well have found that his machine performed perfectly adequately. Later on, as his abilities developed, he may have noticed it's shortcoming. But, at that stage, would simply have either shimmed or rectified the relevant mating parts. We cannot, and never will, have a Rolls Royce for the price tag of a Trabant. Simple fact of life. Coincidentally, as mentioned in an earlier post, I also bought a WM18 clone a few weeks ago. I haven't checked it, other than a cursory check that all bolts and screws were indeed tight. So far, it has performed admirably in all that has been asked from it. But, I'm sure I could find something wrong, if I looked hard enough. A bad workman blames his tools. A good workman makes his tools right. Cheers, Daniel
