Thread: Advice wanted please on sale of railway book.
14/02/2023 17:08:25

Why not place it in the "For Sale" ads here? Nothing to lose.

Alternatively, I should think that many model railway magazines would have a sale-want-ad section.

Can Anyone confirm that Winchester's "Exactly" and "The Perfectionists" are actually the same book under alternative titles?

Oh !

Triggers a frequent thought that I have..... the ever-increasing size of LED screens (used mostly for advertising in shopping malls) - some are truly enormous. Easily large enough to, say, fit out a wall of my den to simulate a window looking out over a tropical beach for instance (a la SF).

But I would have expected by now that someone would have come up with an LED screen on a large sphere. Lot's of things you could do there I think including the subject of this thread and it could be time-variable. So history through the ages etc.

Another point worth noting is that alkaline cells are 1.5v per cell as opposed to only 1.2v for rechargables. This difference can cause some devices to become problematic.

Not really my area of expertise but another difference between regular alkaline and NiCd/NiMh rechargeables is that the latter have quite a low internal resistance. In certain circuits this can cause excessive current flow.

Thread: LED light with magnetic base for milling machine

I found that lights attached to the mill inevitably got in the way at some point. I now have two small ceiling-mounted spotlights aimed at the machining point and I'm much happier with those. I also have them over the lathe and benches.

The moon is visited by robots and samples could be returned remotely (the latter not done yet but well within engineering capabilities).

.... er ... yes, the Russians did it in the 1970's iirc.

I've often wondered how this sort of thing works out: is it left/right halves or top/bottom halves?

That tool post looks like a very good solution for any myford owner. I would have to modify unfortunately to make it work on my lathe.

... as opposed to making something from scratch? (I don't know your situation of course).

I almost had one myself some years ago, Jeff. I was looking at them and the late JS said he had the casting and I could have it for free .... then we figured how much it would cost to get it here!

Or ... you could look at the Gibraltar Tool Post from Hemingway.

Thread: TEST THREAD
21/01/2023 23:22:14

What's really needed here is that, once you insert a picture from your album to a post, it gets incorporated as part of the post itself in addition to your album. Don't think it will happen though ... storage space would increase and something would have to be done about the marching morons who never edit their quotes from a post they are responding to but quote everything (including a dozen pictures) to add a one-liner.

Ooh Look at that. The fourth option Imgur offers, labelled "HTML (Website/blogs) works and posts an actual picture, below. Sooooooooo much quicker and easier than tediously and painfully slowly uploading pics to this site and then linking to the album and so on.

A problem in the past with linking to external sites for pics is that you have no guarantee that the link will last beyond the next re-vamp of that site. Or suddenly they want money for hosting your pics - where it was free before - and you decide not to bother. etc

I agree it's a pain here but it is reliable (as reliable as the poster wants it to be).

Thread: Why are 3 phase motors with VFD so popular in the UK?
21/01/2023 19:57:32

I went 3ph with VFD on my ML7. Much quieter than the original single phase motor. I can also run up to 2x motor speed but rarely do. Much handier is the ability to run at very slow speeds (down to zero) by just turning a knob - without fiddling with the belts - for such things as threading with tailstock die. (There's always been enough torque to do that for the small threads that I'm generally interested in .... I can always change belts as well if necessary for larger threads.)

Wouldn't be without it.

I cannot see the point. You would have to level the lathe every time that the castors are used.

I think that needs to be qualified with ...... "if perfection is your goal".

While I don't use castors anyway, as far as I recall I only ever approximately levelled my ML7 and It's done everything I ever wanted. I would bet there are many others here with similar experience.

I don't decry people who feel that way and want to get everything aligned to a wavelength of blue light or whatever the standard is - more power to them. But horses for courses.

Thread: Simple PCB layout software

Interesting .... thanks, Stuart!

18/01/2023 01:40:58

Stuart, I'm curious to know how you aligned the table of your 3018 to be perpendicular relative to the cutter. On my (two) machines there is no screw-adjustment just multiple fixing screws for each axis. When I tried that, it was impossibly hit and miss.

I did see a suggestion somewhere of mounting a thick aluminum sheet on the table and a milling-type cutter in the head. Then machining the whole sheet area - which would guarantee alignment.

(Someday I'm going to get back to that 3018 if I can remember where I shelved it).

Thread: Someone else has a mystery object
15/01/2023 20:10:42

So what would happen if you stuck this in a hole and instead of using the thread to pull the tap in (which it won't), you apply a known axial feed rate (linked to rotation) to the tap holder?

The hole could be larger than the "tap size".
