Thread: So Much For CE Labels!

Being a sceptic can extend your life span. Don't believe all that you are told, examine and analyse.

... but be prepared to explain the difference between cynicism and scepticism. smiley

Thread: Plans for updating the archaic forum?
24/01/2021 17:16:42

Posted by Morse Homology on 24/01/2021 16:13:44:

.....Xenforo is very cool forum software;......However, the search feature is absolute trash. That would ruin the utility of the stored wisdom of this forum.

All the more surprising then that the search function here (just a site-limited Google search) seems to be so little used. You can almost guarantee that by this time next week there'll be another new "what lathe shall I buy" thread ... or somesuch.

(It doesn't help that the search box is somewhat "buried". If it could be relocated to be part of each page "banner" I believe it would help a lot).

Thread: How not to use a clamp
23/01/2021 01:51:13

Posted by Ramon Wilson on 22/01/2021 23:10:32:

If, as it appears to me, that the clamp is resting on the very thin edge of the packing block .....

It really is sensible in using the clamps shown as designed ie with some if not all of the teeth engaged ....

FWIW, I opened a copy of the image in PSP, played with brightness/contrast and zoomed in. It appears to me that one step of each (clamp and packing-block) is engaged.

Thread: How to Search for Text Inside Multiple PDF Files at Once
20/01/2021 17:18:40

I stumbled across this today which I thought might be useful to others here wink

I haven't tried any of these yet but, for example, I have a full set of the free pdf's of Magpi magazine (101 issues) and if I recall a topic from way back it can be a devil to find it. Up to now I'd only encountered pdf searching on an individual file basis using Reader/Acrobat.

This might be just what I need.

Thread: Files - what do I need to know
18/01/2021 17:27:00
Posted by Howard Lewis on 18/01/2021 16:40:11:

Finding a good file can be a bastard!

I blame the parents.

Just a slightly to one side comment: Don't forget 3D Printing if you need file handles.

Thread: bolts
18/01/2021 17:19:52

Just musing but it ought to be possible to determine whether it's a 47.5 or 60 degree thread by eyeball through a reasonably powerful eye-loupe (or whatever).

Oh, woe .... the passing of the shadowgraph.

Thread: Files - what do I need to know
18/01/2021 16:16:58

One thing I would want on a bastard file is a plain (uncut) edge on one side for filing into a corner without marking the other surface.

They seem to be getting scarcer.

Thread: American Sites for you
18/01/2021 16:12:01

Before this gets too "us and them", the same thing has happened to me the other way round on a number of occasions. Often, but not always, it's content such as streaming video from sites like BBC or ITV.

I get a sense that it's becoming more common in both directions.

Thread: HMEM subscriber fee collection
18/01/2021 16:07:22

It's not just HMEM. It seems to be becoming de rigueur for many subscription payments these days. If you dig deeply enough you should find that you agree to it somewhere buried in the fine print.

I make it a practice immediately after paying/renewing one of these to delete the recurring payment setup in Paypal.

Thread: Seen It All Now - Bah Humbug
18/12/2020 01:53:27

Living under lock-down in the worst-hit CV-19 area of Canada; being nearly 80 and having "underlying medical conditions" (several levels of heart condition plus chemotherapy which compromises the immune system), I had no intention of going to some store and flipping through cards that have been handled by who-knows-who.

So it was my intention not to send any this year (bah humbug). I'm certain all my usual recipients would understand. My wife was upset though so we hit on the Jacquie Lawson compromise (which we've received from others for years on various occasions).

I make no apologies.

If others don't think it's right for them, more power to them. I wouldn't dream of criticising. For me, it's the right thing at the right time.

Incidentally: Jacquie Lawson

Thread: I honestly can’t think of an suitable title
17/12/2020 18:37:17

Thanks for the censorship .... whomever. My (very) terse comment might have been judged political (and against the rules) by a very strong imagination, but certainly no more so than this thread in general and most of its comments. Not to mention other threads in these forums.

And certainly (and obviously) there was nothing personal aimed at anyone here.

I remain at a loss ...

Thread: USB instead of batteries?
15/12/2020 16:11:20

Thanks for all this guys. Since I have an existing USB charger in the immediate vicinity with unused outlets, I think I'll stick to the original idea using the diode (got a few of those around too). In its simplest form I can just cut one end off a USB cable, drill a hole in the case and wire it in.

What I don't have is spare mains power outlets for (yet another) unidentifiable, wal-wart.

I already have a (one) lithium power bank, Michael, although I'm not sure exactly what it would buy me (in my situation). I'll think about it. I don't need portability (at least right now, though it could happen) It did occur to me though, that some enterprising outfit could make a similar device in the shape of 2, 3 or 4 AA-cells (or AAA) as a drop-in replacement for alkaline batteries in many devices .... rechargeable from the now ubiquitous USB chargers. Sort of a super-Nicad/NiMh pack.

NDIY ... sorry, I wasn't very clear there. I don't mean to run it with batteries installed (although I can see why you would think otherwise from my post). I'd be using USB instead of batteries.

Michael .... seems to make sense. Thanks!

14/12/2020 22:02:33

I have a device (Elgato Eve temp/air quality sensor - first generation) which runs on 3 AA batteries. It chews up alkaline batteries rapidly - NiMh even more so. No wonder they came up with a second generation model.

Is it possible, with appropriate wiring to each end of the battery chain, to run this from a USB charger .... either directly or with a series resistance/diode?

Thread: Amazon
14/12/2020 01:25:50

Amazon (and many others) just love people who don't actually read the page and whom they can therefore trap with the defaults. It's the modern way.

.... but 6 times?

Thread: Mastercard ...
11/12/2020 18:53:50

My question is always "Who ultimately pays" .... in this case 14 billion.

- The corporate board members, personally? - not likely.

- The shareholders - perhaps.to a degree.

- Mastercard Users/Customers - probably.

All of this is a fallout of the rabid capitalism which has taken over these days. Where the ONLY thing that matters is the bottom line .... today.

It does? Why?

Thread: Delay to Issue 299
10/12/2020 23:03:19

I can't help feeling that the underlying resentment for many is less the delay in getting issues but more the fear of missing an issue for their (till now) complete collection.

People, understandably, get fairly obsessive about this (and MTM shouldn't complain as it leads to regular renewals). Adding an issue at the end of their subscription doesn't really cut it.

And missing an episode in a multi-part article - particularly those long ones in ME - could be devastating I should think.

Perhaps shutting publication down for a few months as was mentioned earlier (in this or the other thread) for another magazine in the MTM stable is not the worst thing that could happen after all.

Having read this thread through and commented heavily on the "other" thread I am a little concerned as to the comments about repeat articles. The remedy is entirely in your own hands gentlemen and ladies.

Sorry, Ian but I think it needs to be said:

Absolutely, Michael .... couldn't agree more!

Is there really a space in BT's (genuine) url?
