KB - it's not quite clear to me whether your objective is to retain the UK account per se or simply to ensure that you don't lose the funds it contains. If it's the latter, can you not have them transferred to your NZ bank account? That might be as simple as going to your NZ bank and asking them to transfer the money. I did that (admittedly many moons ago) to transfer some money to Canada. probably new rules now but worth a shot. |

I suspect that the USA has devised it setting out mandatory questions couched in a prescribed form to identify accounts around the world which may be / could be used at sometime for money laundering. All a darned nuisance to small groups and clubs with bank accounts. Begs the question ... which is worse, the cure or the disease? |

Although I live in Canada I have a small British pension paid to me. Originally I tried to set up a UK bank account for the pension to be paid in to - the idea being that I would let it accumulate and use it as a source of funds for visits to family. I don't recall the details but the hurdles in doing that were ridiculous and completely killed the idea. So the pension is paid directly to me in Canada. |

I would be careful if doing it by racking the carriage - some lathes may not like too much of that. Better to get/make one of the sliding tools designed for the job. That might be why you haven't done it yet. Tools are there to be used, not preserved.
Hard to imagine that light keyway cuts put more axial load on the carriage than the oft-recommended large-depth cuts when turning using carbide tooling. |
Thread: 7/32-40 UNS die needed |

However I still have the issue of where to get a 7/32-40 UNS die from without importing from the States. To answer my own question, I don't think I will be able to, unless I risk it with the ME equivalent.
I've never heard of a 7/32-40 UNS on this side of the pond either..... #12-40 UNS, sure. My guess is that someone, somewhere has "rounded off" the #12 for his own purposes .... possibly to emphasise that it can be die-cut on 7/32 rod. Although, given that UNS is reserved for "Special" threads, I guess people can make what they want, both in dia and tpi as long as they stick to the UN thread form. Getting commercially available dies in that case might be problematic though. |

Now the streets are being dug up by City Fibre promising gigabit speeds which are already available if wanted, they are making more mess than Virgin fibre and British Gas new mains put together.
Is there any "quid pro quo" for that. That is do they compensate the taxpayer for the inconvenience of them making a public mess/inconvenience in pursuit of their profit.. |

I was told the story early on in my apprenticeship not to smoke over a bath of Carbon Tet as the heat of the cigarette turned the vapour into phosgene. This was discovered as operatives of the degreasing baths who smoked often had breathing difficulties as other non smokers didn't experience. Good old days of smoking in the factory !!
According to my memory those baths were trichlorethylene ("Trico" or "Trike" ) and yes there was the problem with inhaling the fumes through a cigarette.... Carbon Tetrachloride is dry-cleaning fluid isn't it?

I have ads (labelled as such) in my Hotmail inbox on a daily basis. Presumably ad-spam that Microsoft has been paid not to trap. Much the same as I believe Gmail is doing that I referred to earlier. It's the way of the future .... first we really tighten up to block spam (which both Microsoft and Google have been doing lately: older clients have more and more difficulty in even sending through their portals), then we offer a back-door - for a price. LED fittings are more expensive but will last a very long time, probably longer than the typical model engineer. Try and get “flicker free” otherwise you might get in difficulties with strobe effects also headaches! I can see where fluorescent tubes might exhibit flicker but why should LEDs? Gmail lets through zero spam. Been using it for years. Brilliant.
I'd agree generally that gmail's spam trap is very effective, both in trapping stuff gmail rates as spam and in trapping anything you flag as spam, from that point on. I've had what may be a significant exception though. I've had repeated spam from "Shelly Seedorf" - some financial thing. Never had anything to do with them. No matter how many times I flag it as spam, it's back the next day. I suspect now that in keeping with the current practice of rabid capitalism, gmail is unblocking spam like this for a fee from the spammer. (It may perhaps only be applied to free gmail accounts?). |

It doesn't matter whether they're flourescent (which I prefer) or LED. They give the same amount of light per Watt.
Is that true? I thought the whole point of LED tubes was to use fewer watts for the same light output? |

A couple of times recently, I have had an email headed Car Insurance, followed by Confirmation Receipt. Message reads As low as $38/ month for Auto Insurance.
I don't really understand why you find such an email noteworthy. I probably get 20,30 or more a month scan/spam emails of similar ilk. Often partly, but poorly, targeted Most of them are dealt with by spam-traps/junk-filters. |

Ah I've got it now, when you open the 1tem it is showing £21.08 and there is a little photo of the wooden base with a red box round it. Click the photo next to it for the 3cyl and prce is £750, click the one for the 2cyl and that is
Can't rally get too worked up about that .... it's a fairly common practice on ebay where they have several options and list the lowest priced one - usually something very cheap - defaulting the opening page to that. Chinese sellers do it a lot but I've seen it from others. Pushy marketing but anyone who can't cope with it shouldn't really be shopping in that environment without his Dad. |

Seems to be a lot of prejudice about AliExpress, possibly from people who have never bought anything from them.
I just checked and I've bought from them 8 times in the last 5 years (I keep good records). None of the orders has been a problem delivery-wise and the goods have been what I expected them to be. I'd have no qualms about ordering from (through) them again. My only gripe is, as I mentioned before, the daily spam which continues to this day .... although it all gets spam-trapped at gmail. |

Anyone had any dealings with Aliexpress based in China.
If you do go this route, I'd suggest not using a "prime" email address. You *will* get daily spam from AliExpress which you *won't* be able to turn off. A gmail address will do - gmail's spam filter is pretty good and if you flag it as such will reliably disappear it for you on an ongoing basis. |

Anyone in the UK who hasn't already looked at Peter's rates is advised to sit down first. Also warn your wife that after you have done crying you may be arranging to emigrate.
I'm not sure (i.e I don't know) how it's billed in the UK but I should point out that those rates are for the electricity alone. There are a bunch of other charges on top of that: Delivery; Regulatory; Sales-Tax. Fairness prompts me to add that there is (currently) an Ontario Government Electricity Rebate. For example, on my latest bill (1 month): the total charge for electricity was $78.35 total bill : $141.38 less rebate of $21.27 (The rebate was brought in a few years ago, presumably to mask the large jump in rates at that time and forestall trouble. I'm expecting it to be quietly dropped any time.) Edited By Peter Greene 🇨🇦 on 23/08/2022 01:50:18 |
