Not exactly what the OP had in mind I guess but I'd have given my eye teeth for something like this when I was 9 years old: Edited By Peter Greene 🇨🇦 on 04/12/2022 19:23:24

Sam, can I suggest when posting APOD links such as this that you don't use the direct link. Instead, - go to the page - click on the "previous day" arrow at the bottom - then click on the "next day" arrow Which will get you back to where you thought you started except that it now has a fixed url containing the date. Like this **LINK** The link you posted will have moved on tomorrow! Edited By Peter Greene 🇨🇦 on 03/12/2022 19:32:08

Would seem a bit of a contradiction anyway to put out a "community edition" that required a Pro version of Windows.

Rowan As Nicholas says the tailstock poppet barrel is hollow. Either a gentle tap with a hammer on a suitable drift as Nicholas suggests or make up a slide hammer style knocker by using a longer drift with a handle on the end. Spare file handle perhaps or just a simple graspable size lump of metal. My experience of loose drift rods is that they to be good at the self hiding thing and vulnerable to being used as stock material. Something slightly more engineered hung on a hook close to the machine or held by a terry clip tends to be easier to find.

I now have 1,129 days on the new '23' licence, so it does seem to be a rolling licence as you upgrade to newer SE versions. I've been using SE/CE for about two years now, so at this point I'm looking at five years use at no cost. Hopefully this 'roll-over' will continue again each year going forward.

My working hypothesis is that the ‘lone genius’ Inventor of the mechanism was on his way to the Ancient Greek Patent Office … when the ship sank.
My theory is that a gang of guys at an ancient Greek Model Engineers club got together in their newsletter to design "... this really zany mechanism and drop it in the sea so that when someone fishes it up in 2000 years ....."

I always put a dab of coppaslip on wheelnuts, and have never had a problem! Cracking of the metal behind the wheelnut is caused by over tightening,
Cracking of the metal behind the wheel nut is caused by too much axial load, whether by over-tightening or by reducing the nut to stud friction if the manufacturer has specified dry assembly. Ford had serious problems with this in the 60's - it may well have since been addressed to reduce the severity of the problem. By all means feel free to experiment on your own car. I won't.
23/11/2022 22:25:54 | ||
Whatever ... DON'T lubricate the wheel-nuts on cars. Quite apart from its effect on the stud, you will be in grave danger of cracking the wheel where the nut seats.

Another bit of UK history gone They've pretty much erased every splinter of our past
At least hyperbole has survived The BBC in the 50's- 60's had film of a tall chimney being (expertly) demolished with explosives. They put it on quite frequently and ran it forward, backward and slo-mo. It was very popular in its day.

Chris are you really suggesting we only discuss model engineering on this forum ? Errrrr............Yes, I am actually, and I was given the very firm impression that is exactly what is for.
"The Tea Room .... apparently created to channel the inevitable OT threads that any forum experiences so that people can read or ignore.
Brexit: when that happened there was a specific notice give (by Neil iirc) that any disscusions would not be tolerated in that instance. For the obvious reasons that feelings ran high and it would take over the entire site. That seems to have been relaxed a little more recently but not completely. Politics in this thread. Politics is ubiquitous in life and is a background factor in almost every topic one can think of can think of. I don't think this particular thread has invoked politics significantly (Sorry about that big space up there. Funny things happened when I cut-and-pasted from the topics screen and no amount of editing would fix it.) Edited By Peter Greene 🇨🇦 on 20/11/2022 01:54:23

Prisons are not as some think there to punish, loss of liberty is the punishment. I imagine the "some" would include most of those that have actually been on the receiving end of the crime, or close to it, rather than considering it from a purely academic perspective.

For example, the recidivism rate in Scandinavia where open prisons are the norm is only about 20 per cent. In the USA where prisons are draconian and worse, the recidivism rate is 70 per cent. Not necessarily disagreeing but just to point out that you are not comparing a single variable there (open vs closed prisons) but also two very different countries (both in terms of social norms and general nature/extent of crime).

| Or you could just put them all in Max security and raise the income tax rate by 5%. Why is it assumed that something new always implies new taxes? Why not re-prioritise the existing tax base? Edited By Peter Greene 🇨🇦 on 18/11/2022 18:58:02 | ||
