Thread: What do you do about cookies? |
02/01/2022 12:34:12 |
I just accept all the cookies and leave everything on, I did clear them all once and then had to manually log in to all the websites I go to, and in the case of places like Screwfix, B & Q, and Toolstation also enter my address etc to find the local stock situation. John |

Thread: To harden or not to harden that is the Question |

About 25 years ago I bought some machined lengths of 'T' strip from Myford Ltd, this was not hardened as you had to both cut it to length and tap to it suit. John |
Thread: jury service |
02/12/2021 19:46:41 |
It must all come down to the type of case you have to be a juror on, I found it very interesting but the 2 cases I was on were not too serious, the first a criminal case was dismissed by the judge after a couple of days because of prosecution evidence failings and the second was a civil case where we had to reach both a verdict and also decide on damages, however tonight I've just watched the BBC news report of a 6 year old boy who was tortured and murdered, his father being guilty of manslaughter and his partner guilty of murder, both guilty of child cruelty, the case lasted 9 weeks, just watching the TV news reporting details and a few moments of actual footage showing his suffering brought tears to my eyes, but to have to endure 9 weeks of it, it would have to be done and would give great satisfaction to convict the guilty but could leave you traumatised for a long time. 'Imperial' is not ipso-facto fractions. I have never in my whole (Imperial) Engineering life used fractions, or seen them used seriously on drawings or elsewhere. 37/64 would be 0.578 ±whatever You were lucky, in the DO where I worked in the 60s all the drawings used fractions such as 37/64" with the occasional decimal one where a tighter tolerance was required, it was only when working for another company in 1971 when the UK changed to decimal currency that the company changed from inch fractions to drawing in millimetres, and both these companies were large Multinationals. I've just retired from the cheffing game and the thing that has always puzzled me is this. Why does average guy who never cooks decide to give it a go outdoors in the rain using a method invented by a bloke in a cave several millenia ago? Back then the cooking was hit and miss, cave blokes food was lucky to be dead let alone cooked when he ate it so no one was bothered by the results, but we've moved on chaps. So why?
You could put a similar question to the guys on here who spend hours playing around with steam engines etc when there are far more efficient and cleaner methods of obtaining power and propulsion. Anyway I don't BBQ in the rain but I do think that steaks cooked on BBQs taste much better, more like the flame cooked ones you get in steakhouses. John |

eBay, is also a great source for Myford parts and accessories. I have found most of what I need there - sometimes it just requires a little patience. Unfortunately, with search set to worldwide, one has to wade through hundreds of listings of cheap and poor quality accessories out of India - dozens of sellers touting the exact same products which really swamp the results - it is a pity that eBay doesn't offer a way of excluding certain locations.Edited By clivel on 14/06/2021 06:27:06 When your eBay search results are listed can't you just scroll down the filters on the left hand side of the eBay listings and set the location? It will default to worldwide on your next search but it's many times quicker than wading through everything, I can set mine to only list items to within 2 miles of my address if I want but normally use UK only. John Unfortunately not, as I am in Canada and not the UK. The options I can choose from for location are: Canada only, North America only, or worldwide. So, if I want to find Myford items which for the most part come from UK based sellers then I have to choose worldwide which unfortunately includes hundreds and hundreds of items out of India, many of these are identical items from different sellers which makes scrolling through the results very difficult. Clive
That does surprise me, I thought that you would have had better search choices or at least the same as us, there is also a little window at the top right of our search results which by default says 'ending soonest' if I click on this I get various choices to list results such as, nearest, highest price, lowest price, newly listed etc. I've just done a test search on https://www.ebay.com the USA site, I don't know if this is the one you would use in Canada but there is an different option to ours at the top right of the page which reads 'best match' and clicking on this gives 'distance nearest first', but of course this wouldn't necessarily list UK first, my apologies to you if you have already tried these suggestions without success, as we say, I'm not trying to teach my Grandma how to suck eggs' John |

Just received a text from Parcelforce @ 09:37 saying they missed us earlier and to book a redelivery via a link. The link 'looks' valid but I went straight on to the Parcelforce website and entered the 'tracking number' manually and guess what? It's not a valid number. I entered the mobile number 077750 99726 into a valid mobile search (there are a number of sites that come up as not tested by Norton) and it is located in Indonesia. If you're a person expecting a delivery you could be easily taken in by this one. Roger You're right, If the scammers are lucky and get the timing right it can make it look very authentic, I renewed my TV licence on line a few weeks ago, about 3 days after renewing I got an email saying that my bank had refused payment for the licence renewal and could I please click the link they kindly sent me, I did click but is was the delete key. The cover for the drive belt from the motor doesn’t fit due to the clutch. I’m assuming this means the clutch was an aftermarket add on? When I fitted a Mk2 clutch to my Mk1 Super7 I just used a 50mm dia hole saw to cut out the guard and fitted a spacer and plate over the protruding clutch shaft. John |

I should be able to hold a bar of silver steel in the vertical slide, using a milling attachment in the lathe chuck, and mill a recess to form a u-shape or clevis. Then I can drill a hole for the bolt. Apologies, I was suffering from a lack of confidence mainly due to inexperience. I realise this is prohibitive to learning. There's no need to use silver steel at all, you're just making things difficult for yourself, mild steel is perfecrly satisfactory. John |

The one I made for my S7 is very much like this one in the link, 3rd photo down with it screwed in the headstock. https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=129074 John

When I got a Myford quick release collet chuck for my S7 Mk1 it also came missing the clevis, it's a simple thing to make assuming you have access to a milling machine, if not you could even hacksaw the clevis cutout, no particular accuracy is required, it only works for a few seconds to open or close the collet, the rest of the time it just sits there, for the clevis pin itself I just drop a m6 bolt through the hole. I've got to go out now but if you want I'll try and put up a photo of it later and list some sizes, but I've no idea what you have exactly with the ML7 attachment so no guarantees that what I have would fit yours. Letting the answering machine screen your calls is pretty effective. Not if you have someone in the house who cannot not-answer a ringing phone. Seems to be a psychological thing, even if it's a 95% chance of being a spam call they still pick it up But not picking it up that means there is a 5% chance of missing an important call. |
