Thread: How to drill holes in ABS plastic without splintering? |

Yes sir, that's good information! Pete

Thread: How to remove four jaw chuck screws? |
14/06/2018 00:35:01 |
I've always used a pin punch about 4mm dia. and tapped 'em out from the front. The punch will just fit along side the screw and clear the chuck body. Don't use a precision punch, a plain 'ol hardware store one works fine, as you'll probably have to bang it smartly to get the yokes out. Heck, even a stout nail works...

Thread: what is this tool for? |
10/04/2018 17:10:12 |
With only two 'sides' to expand it would need to be rotated to expand a tube in stages? This one has me very curious. I hope someone can identify it!! Pete

Except for the short length, it looks very much like a dent removal tool for shot gun barrels. The ramps are too short for it to be a sensitive measuring tool. I suspect it's for use in tubular parts.... Hang all the Vincents!! Pete

Thread: Advantages of Hackworth Valve gear? |
02/02/2018 20:27:16 |
Very much simpler. For an 'improved' Hackworth, look up Marshal gear. Pete

A (huhmm) tip for those that make tips from copper for soldering irons. I learned this for the old copper bits heated in a furnace but have applied it to any copper: When shaping the tip is finished, coat the tip with silver brazing alloy. The tip will last a loooonnngggg time. Pete

Thread: Wind vane project |

A simple eddy current brake. The ready availability and low price of Neodynium magnets has made such dampers easily affordable for us to play with. I love thinking about some new gadget to mess with..... Pete |
Thread: Grease suitable for a lathe chuck scroll |
27/12/2017 07:11:56 |
Hopper, are there any specification markings for that grease? It sounds just like the kind of grease I've been looking for!! Thanks, Pete |
Thread: Merry Christmas! |
24/12/2017 06:18:00 |
And from the Pacific North West of the USA, to all of you, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Pete |
Thread: Not an industrial injury, but... |

I'm wishing I'd known about 'laying' years ago. I would have planted something suitable just so I could try it! There's a lot of wire fence I'd like to replace with a layed hedge. Pete

20/11/2017 21:31:18 |
We don't have hedgerows that I know of. We do have fence lines that grow wild and that's where the critters are! Thank you all for the enlightenment! Pete

Thanks Gordon! I always knew you Brits were a bit batty about horticulture but just how many ways are there to tame a hedge are there?? More than a dozen it seems.... Lost arts....

OK, I'll bite. What constitutes 'laying a hedge' ???? Pete

Thread: Alloy Pistons |
11/11/2017 23:33:30 |
That's an excellent question, Duncan, one that I've had recently. Obtaining big chunks of brass, cast iron or bronze is quite spendy where I am. Aluminum, however, is another story. I've made sense of using aluminum for most other parts but parts that are working 'in steam' are still a question!! Pete |
Thread: How long does it take you to make stuff? |

Being in my shop is like going fishing. Sometimes it can be a darned nuisance to catch fish! Pete

Thread: Diamond coated steel disks for grinding from China |
02/11/2017 00:17:08 |
I have a 6" diamond disc that rotates at 1725 rpm and another that rotates at 170 rpm. Both speeds work well with lapping/shaping carbides. The 170 rpm unit is the second I built and I can mount, magnetically, discs from 300 mesh to 3000 mesh. All the meshes work well at those speeds. Higher speeds can be used for much faster material removal but need a liquid "wash" of some sort to clear the swarf. Pete

Thread: Dressing/trueing grinding wheels |
25/10/2017 20:20:06 |
A shop vac with the hose end arranged to be very near the source of 'dust', will collect most of the dust. If the grinder has a way to attach the hose to the end bell of the grinder that's the best. It's amazing how much dust control is possible with just a minor amount of effort. Pete

Thread: John Stevenson |
23/10/2017 18:19:18 |
A great man has moved on to the next level. My condolences to Debs and the rest of his family. His life here deserves a celebration. He'd like that..... Pete
|
19/10/2017 23:32:57 |
So that's where he went! It's been way quiet and calm around here and now we know why. I thought it was because Debs had turned his mind to 'other' subjects! Come on John, you're the King Bodger. Life's a bodge. Put the arm on this thing and bodge it gone! We're all in this together, so get back soon. We'll keep the coffee hot and the mugs sorta rinsed out... Pete

Thread: Refurbishment of Antique Aneroid Barometer |
18/10/2017 18:07:26 |
Hi Dave, I know there are specialist lacquers for brass but I can't think of a name right now. I have a spray can but the label has fallen off long ago.... it is a true lacquer; it has that unique, powerful, lacquer smell. All of the lacquer work I've done recently has been wood. Restoration of old finishes. Pete
