Thread: Model Engineer - Citizen Scientist
03/07/2017 09:37:29

I'm glad to hear how they call them, I don't think people realize a lot of the best scientists and engineers had no paper qualifications whatsoever, that wasn't important, but what they did have was a lifetime involvement behind it.

I would like to think we could call ourselves citizen engineers! yes Just look at the charity remap, it doesn't go looking for professionals necessarily and that has flourished.

There was an article in MEW recently about flute manufacture and the author said the best silver tube maker he's met was an old bloke in a workshop doing it the same way it had be done for generations and it was dead accurate.

Some people have an almost cartoonish ideal of what a professional is allowed to be, I suppose.

Thread: Milling in a pillar drill
02/07/2017 21:09:21

Yeah I would agree a pillar drill is..well not really designed with milling in mind.(a pillar drill is absolute must for a workshop in my mind, but just not for cobbled together milling).

It's technically possible, but I would question whether it would get the accuracy needed even if you could get over the big deflections.

A lathe would be better suited, and would probably give you a better end product, you just have to think about the setups a bit more.

And own a milling slide of course. You could just use a machine vise with and angle plate and pack the work pieces to the right amount, but this is perhaps going too far. I bought a rigid vertical milling slide, simply incase my mill ever croaks it then I've still got an ace up my sleeve.

I just rescued a 1GB SD card from the jaws of Doom (Doom being a labrador...)

I find the only true solution to save the object is to replace it with another on offer that's far tastier.

Thread: Choosing my first propane torch?
30/06/2017 18:39:41

MAPP was great when they used to make it..

I would advise a sievert handheld torch or for a bigger one, a generic brand hose type with interchangeable nozzles (and a pressure regulator) and hook up to a small 3kg rented propane cylinder is a viable option.

Looks Good!

Perhaps we should have a thread to co-operatively design and build an MEW 3D printer?

Neil

Nice idea Neil. Another thought, I have a CNC mill but not much space for a 3D printer. I've toyed with the idea of fitting an extruder to it for occasional printing. Might be an interesting project...?

I also have space problems but I found that the Kossel mini printer, which is another design by the same people who made the I3 prusa kit. This makes for a machine that's got much smaller footprint than the prusa, but compensates for this by giving it a lot of height.

I find in a lot of 3D printed assemblies that they incorporate a hexagon space for a nut to sit sunken into the body rather than bother with thread printing, that way you've got metal to metal contact which will likely have a much stronger gripping power.

I think it was bought out by Sainsburys Homebase.

Gave me a chuckle, thanks wink

Frankly ground to within 0.001" on all faces and matched for around £13, seems a bit ridiculous to expect amazement from them. They probably couldn't give a toss if it's 0.1mm taper in full length.

Don't be a cheapskate! You can get 1kg of filament for about £15 delivered. At the end you'll have a reel you can wind your 50M on to.

I have bought about 50m of PLA filament, but it didn't come with a drum, typically, should I be expecting to buy the maximum single quantity in order to get a drum included? or should I be concerned with buying/making one myself?

It seems that "Oxford" is a trade name owned by Kennedy who just so happen to also trade as Cromwell Tools. So at best you will be getting Cromwell's own brand tooling made where the price point suits.

Why do factories of all places shuffle around with the branding?

I wouldn't call this the fault of the people who make the stuff, they probably aren't even aware of the people it goes to but the fault of the people representing them.

When I worked in some factories I barely knew a thing about where it ended up. Where I worked individual components were made from anything under 30mm downwards and these would often go to other factories who put the components into the assemblies.

I made and inspected things for Cadburys (brass pins to push open moulds for chocolate Easter eggs) to F1 plastic armatures for coil windings, French telecommunications company plastic electrical connectors, aircraft connectors to PTFE grommets for the NHS to put into children's ears. but there were plenty where I had no clue as to what it actually did, that was none of my concern as far as the managers and sales teams would let me know.

I would also add that even in the most high tech facilities with rigorous inspection control, every item inspected if need be, mistakes still happen and bad stuff gets through. Having said that, we never disputed when mistakes were found.
