Building a Workshop Ouija Board for getting the advice of Engineers gone to a better place is a brilliant idea - those old guys really knew their stuff. Wiring an Arduino to some ectoplasm would do the trick. No problem getting the parts - you can buy anything on ebay these days...

I wager JasonB already has, no wonder he could make so many engines. wink

Don't know about Chester but I can't fault WARCO had 3 machines from them and their aftersales service is great.
Mark P.

Ditto, and their spare parts service is normally good too. Always someone to pick up the phone there.

I personally, found that there have been a lot of unfavourable stories about chester, so I have never used them, rightly or wrongly, it's saying just why I don't, despite their very good prices.

How does the 'quality control' of current supply compare with that of 2001 ?

...

MichaelG.

Making hobby lathes is highly competitive and profits low. It must be very tempting to use 'nearly good enough' castings rather than rejecting them and to not slow production by fixing small faults.

I don't think enough lathes are made to justify the quality techniques used to make cars and electronics.

Dave

You've just summed up perfectly the same culture that exists in quality control the world over, if the customer is willing to pay high enough, then appropriate measures will be taken.

Ironically my experience as a quality Inspector was for making car and electronic components here in the U.K,

You complain that the parts aren't meeting the grade, and unless they're either complaining or paying dear enough for it, it's just shrugged off by the management or shipped out on a prayer that they wont notice it.

One of the applications was for making roller bearings that went into winches, that needed a relatively high surface finish tolerance (I think around 0.15 Ra), you could go three times over that upper limit before anyone even bothered changing the tool.

It's precisely because it's so tempting to just say it'll be okay, when it's so close. The production manager is essentially guessing what the designer or end user thinks is important to them.

Its not a case of what nationality the company belongs to, it's more a case of whether a company has taken quality control seriously, even harder to get them to care when the customer doesn't pay for it.

Thread: Dies

Hello Bob.

Unfortunately I suspect it is just poor manufacturing of the dies. I guess the only option is to buy from one of the major manufacturers where quality control will probably be tighter.

Regards

Anna

Hi,

I've got the double taper on good quality presto HSS dies too. So I think it is more a standard practice than a quality issue.

wink.My biggest problem is that I tend to overthink thing ,then I stall out .

I think it's far more common than you tend to realize, you can only cut it once and then it's gone. So you don't want to mess up.

I always keep in mind the expression of the late Joe Martin, CEO of Sherline;

"I never knew anybody who messed something up by taking too light a cut"

Now we can all just go listen to some nice jazz and spend the rest of the day chilling out about it. wink

Not really sure how the MT reamer can wander if it's following a pre-determined path by the roughed out shape? Surely it will cut relative to bored/tapered hole that's already there?

Besides which, your tail stock has got to be near enough bang on in the first place, otherwise you'd notice all those off centre holes you've been drilling.

I don't know what the budget situation is like, would be easier to give a clearer answer if it was VS something else to buy, but I don't think you could go far wrong for just a trial yourself.

I would imagine that the gauge suitability is relative to the size of the cylinder, and therefore specific to it's pressure.

Generally speaking, I would've thought it would be okay so long as you know its suitably rated with regards to the pressure.

Firearms control in this country is one of the tightest in the world and I have no quibble with that. I would like to continue with the sport that I have done for 50 years. Banning firearms completely would not solve the criminal use of firearms. It would simply deprive those law abiding shooters of their sport.

Andrew.

The majority of the guns used in crimes in the UK are either smuggled from abroad or are retro-fits and Saturday night specials. So you're correct, banning them here would have zero impact on the ones who use them for crime.

With the right expertise it would prove utterly impossible to prevent a minded person to creating their own anyway, unless you want to start banning table salt.

cross-slide vice, flood cooling system and a LED room-sized work light.

Dave

I don't know what use the light would have in our environment, probably why it's on your list. I agree flood coolant sounds like a great idea but in reality turns out to be far more trouble and hassle than it's worth if your machine was never designed to cope with it.

One I do have to disagree with though would be the cross slide vise. definitely ends all those moments on the pillar drill needing to swivel and turn the table to get the right alignment. The vise itself isn't very delicate must admit, but I use it to hold a smaller vise inside that, which is like a small toolmakers vise.

I just use this stuff **LINK**

For my intents and purposes i'm quite happy to go without flood coolant having tried it.

A little bit of neat cutting oil does help the tool, I find, and I don't end up in a state afterwards.

Good idea to deposit it in a little container with a brush beside it.
