Thread: Any electricians on here - advice needed |
10/11/2016 08:54:01 |
Steve, your electrician is correct in that the 17th edition Regs don't state that isolation has to be provided above the worktop, only that isolation is provided that is accessible. You could argue that yours is not accessible as it is behind the appliance. Unfortunately it is a bit of a grey area as it falls under Building Regs Part 'P', which reference back to the 17th edition. My experience is with industrial installations, so I don't get too involved with domestic work, but common sense dictates that isolation for maintenance and safety should be readily accessible. Thread: Has my subsccription run out? |
25/10/2016 22:02:22 |
I am in a similar situation, although mine was mostly my fault as instead of renewing I mistakenly took out a new Print and Digital subscription to MEW, which didn't work. Having informed the subs dept of my mistake that subscription has been disabled and I have been given a temporary subscription for two months so it can be sorted out. We're into the third week now and still no further forward, so good luck! Edited By Andrew Holdaway on 25/10/2016 22:02:59 |
Thread: On-line subscription renewal. |
01/10/2016 22:29:35 |
Thanks Neil, I'll give it a few days to see if I get a reply and let you know. |
01/10/2016 19:40:57 |
I am also having problems, after having thought I had renewed in July, the link I had followed took me to the subscription page so I inadvertently took out a fresh subscription. In trying to rectify this I ended up with two subscriptions! I should have a digital and print subscription to both ME and MEW, but now only have one for ME. I have written again to the subscription helpline, as despite assurances that this has been sorted, it clearly hasn't, so good luck sorting out your problem. It may be easier to telephone on Monday as emails seem to take a long time to be answered. |
Thread: is this motor suitable for a milling machine |
03/08/2016 20:39:37 |
Mark, your sketch is correct for a 230v 3 phase setup to run from a single to three phase inverter. If the motor runs the wrong way, swap any two of the wires from the inverter to the motor. Andy |
Thread: 5" Gauge Tich |

John, the pictures are in your album. Not sure if you can see it on Android, but at the top of the reply box under the thread there should be some icons. Top right is a camera icon which is 'Insert image from album'. Click on that and add the images you want. Andy |
Thread: Windows 10 forced upgrade |
27/07/2016 11:12:18 |
I had the music in the background a few times. It appears to be the new media player included with W10, which keeps playing tunes to get you to have a look at the new 'features'. I finally opened it and disabled everything I could find and have not had it happen again. Andy |
Thread: Has anybody built the flame eater "Nick"? |
08/06/2016 12:36:35 |
Brian, the lubricator on the top of the cylinder is non-functional and purely cosmetic, so you could leave it off if it's going to cause a problem. |
Thread: Electric motor question |
08/06/2016 09:36:40 |
You could put a small piece of strimmer line in the hole to create a tighter hole, then screw the self tapper in, just don't over-tighten it! Andy |
Thread: Broken drill bit soaked in Alum : it is not working |
07/06/2016 15:39:05 |
The 'proper Alum' question popped in to my mind too - I bought mine direct from a chemical company in Manchester, and as soon as you put a bit of steel into a hot saturated solution it fizzes and dissolves very quickly. I fear you may have a 'nanny state' substitute. Andy |
Thread: Has anybody built the flame eater "Nick"? |
03/06/2016 14:51:54 |
Brian, bearing in mind that I'm a rank beginner at this, I would have thought that with your flywheel mounted as you have it you could drill the centre hole and machine the outside rim and face of the flywheel at the same time, then turn it round to do the other face. That way the centre hole and outer rim would be concentric. Andy |
Thread: D C Stirling/Hot Air Engine - Burner |
24/05/2016 15:53:21 |
Ian, on this burner the filler cap is also the wick holder. Mine flares as well once it gets hot, but not disastrously. I forgot to mention that in my burner there is a hard felt wadding in a horse shoe shape that retains the meths and stops it boiling up. There is a recess for the wick to sit in. Andy |
Thread: Has anybody built the flame eater "Nick"? |
23/05/2016 14:07:31 |
Brian, I haven't seen the plans for this engine, but I read on another forum that the rubber ball sits in the exhaust stack base and acts as a one-way exhaust / pressure relief valve. Andy |
23/05/2016 10:24:55 |
Brian, 'Teil' is German for 'Part', so the plan says 'O-ring part 44'. |
Thread: DRO usage |
20/05/2016 23:22:42 |
Dave, I can't help you with your milling machine application, but I also have a Sino DRO fitted to my lathe, and while I find the functions I need are fairly intuitive, I can't for the life of me get the 'Tool store' functions to work correctly, so at the risk of hijacking your thread as soon as you've started it, if anyone is familiar with this function, please explain how it works as it would be quite useful! I would also agree that the manual is pretty awful, but I did find one on the internet for a similar DRO that had been re-written in native English, but I still can't get the Tool function working. If I can find the link I'll post it. Andy |

Thread: Which Epoxy? |
16/05/2016 09:21:43 |
ThisZAP Epoxy is what I use, and have never had a problem. Andy Edited By Andrew Holdaway on 16/05/2016 09:46:45 |
Thread: Kerry AG lathe |
14/05/2016 14:25:50 |
Isn't it just a gasket to prevent coolant going down the fixing bolt holes? I set my lathe on a bead of silicon between the bed and the drip tray for the same purpose. Andy |

You should be able to get Tallow from a decent electrical wholesalers - we still use it for threading conduit. Andy |
Thread: D C Stirling/Hot Air Engine - Burner |
07/05/2016 21:36:57 |
David, I've sketched and dimensioned the burner, and taken a few pictures as well. I've put them in an album **LINK** If you need any more info, let me know. I was going to draw this up properly and my pc is playing up, then the scanner wouldn't communicate, so back to pencil, paper and camera! Andy |
