Thread: The Workshop Progress Thread (2016) |
01/11/2016 20:40:59 |
My workshop contribution was to take delivery of a reversing switch for my Boxford AUD and an on/off switch for the coolant motor. They have both now been fitted to a plate that was used to blank off some of the 3 phase electical equipment when the lathe was converted to single phase sometime before I bought the lathe. I'll have a play with an AVO before connecting anything to the mains, just to see what switches what. If I'm not too confident after that I'll call in a professional. |

Adams site is well worth a browse some of his work is beyond belief ( at least to a humble retired aerospace engineer!) |

Do you know what the metal is under the silver plate? Silver solder is generally for quite high temperature brazing and may not be suitable. |

Thanks John, that's what I hoped, despite having no expert knowledge of electrickery, as its known on the austinsevenfriends site! |

Many thanks Steve for the useful info. I was hoping to tap into the nvr switch to get power to the 1/3 HP coolant pump so that, in the event of power failure, the pump couldn't restart. Is that a possibility?

Brian You should find a wiring schematic inside the cover, shows remote stop/start wiring details. To ensure the overload works disconnect the motor feed from term A and connect on B, wire a link between term A and L2. Best to use a separate starter for the suds pump so you have correct overload range device. Emgee

Thread: Re-Wiring Lathe Switches |
28/10/2016 20:04:16 |
I'm hoping that someone on here can help me rewire my lathe. I have a Boxford AUD that was wired for single phase, probably by a former owner. The motor is wired to a MEM No Volt Release (NVR) switch marked 84ADS using Live into L1 and Neutral into L3 with the output to the motor using A and C connections. I want to now wire in a forward/stop/reverse switch and have a wiring diagram but am unsure which terminals to use in the NVR switch. I also want to wire in a coolant pump with its own switch but again, am not sure which terminals to use in the NVR switch. Naturally, I want the mains power to go through the NVR switch first. Can someone advise or should I get an electrician in? Many thanks, Brian |

Thread: Sky tv |

We had Sky originally because the TV reception where we live was dreadful. We were paying Sky about £90 per month and decided it had to go, especially as we are not sports or soap fans. We went with TalkTalk because there broadband speed is good in this area, they were less than half the cost of Sky and the only additional cast was to have a new box. You also need an aerial for Freeview and we already had Freesat built in to the TV. Customer services have been good on the two occasions we needed to talk to someone and the fitters from BT & TaalkTalk were excellent. We are still discovering channels and are very pleased with changing. |

I was interested in the making of a face for John Wildings English Regulator Clock as I made one of these some years ago. Mind you, I was lucky with the face; the firm I worked for had taken delivery of a very large and very expensive CNC engraving machine and I was friendly with the person who had been trained to operate it! The machine took all of 8 minutes to cut the circles and roman numerals, the only problem being that we didn't know how the put curved lines at top & bottom of the numbers, so I had to make do with straight ones. Yes, cheating I know but......... Edited By Brian Hutchings on 25/10/2016 21:00:58 |

I'm in the process of sorting out the electrics on my Boxford AUD because the lathe was converted to single phase some time before I bought it about 14 years ago. I bought a Vertex coolant set about 10 years ago so I thought that I ought to get that fitted as well. I'm searching ebay etc for a forward-stop-reverse switch and a switch to turn the coolant motor on and off. I managed to move the lathe away from the wall so that the pump etc can be fitted and expected to find all the items that I have lost over the years but all I found was swarf that had fallen down the back. I am also fitting a splashback so that shouldn't happen again! |

Quote: "Just how close to the wall is your lathe?" The edge of the tray is against the wall so your suggestion makes complete sense but I was worried in case I had overlooked something vital.
