Thread: Scaling back forum activity |

It's always a shame when someone feels the need to resign (or semi) from a forum such as this but it has to be remembered that times and people do change. I have been a moderator on an engineering forum for over 19 years now and it is noticeable how the users (members) interest changes over time. There is an initial keenness to be in contact with like minded people and to share experiences whether gaining or giving knowledge. After a while the realisation sets in that you know as much as you need too and you no longer know more than those asking the questions. You also notice that the newcomers queries begin to get repetitively similar and suggesting that the search facility is used normally falls on deaf ears. There are times, no doubt, when moderators may seem harsh but consider also the logistics of the forum. There is minimum advertising here because it is, I believe, run by a commercial enterprise. The owners therefore are entitled to set some rules and live by them. If these rules do not sit well with you then of course you have the right to stand back. I do find it a shame that Barrie felt the need to publicize his disagreement with Jason as it does not allow Jason to defend his position and as such seems somewhat unfair. A quiet departure with PMs to close contacts would have been more diplomatic. Brian |

Looking at your lathe on lathes.co website it would be a shame to consign it to the scrap bin, hopefully someone can help you. |

It looks to me somewhat similar to an air operated "mole" as used by the gas and water trades to drive a pipe through the ground. |

At low engine/dynamo revolutions the regulator will be busy switching on and off to balance the battery/load. Do the lights settle down as the revs come up? |

Agreed, but it's all relative... On a refrigeration forum I use one of the members from Iraq posted a picture of his car dashboard at 5 o'clock in the morning and a temperature of 50⁰C. ( Not for me I think) |

Well that passed a little time reading up on that quite interesting subject. It seems that there are less losses in transmitting DC power as it doesn't have a frequency compared with AC. These losses increase with the distance. One factor which I believe could be important s that the DC link provides a system isolator between the two AC systems. This allows, for example, the North and South islands to be out of phase with each other but still pass power between each other. Other things are that the DC cabling can be smaller than the AC especially on overhead cabling therefore towers can be smaller, cheaper, too. |

A couple of thoughts, I'm no expert on these things... Are there any limit switches in the circuit? Is the ram mechanically sound and able to operate in both directions? What is the small PCB for? |

You mean a Dowty washer? That's the name, for the life of me I couldn't remember it. It was only 40 years ago when I used them on a regular basis. |

Many years ago I was in lane three at around 70 when the traffic slowed rather quickly. I hit the brakes hard but also checked my mirrors, as trained, so as I came close to stopping I moved right towards the central area with my Dad, in the passenger seat shouting "what are you doing?" Having stopped we watched the car behind me, nose down, head directly into the boot of the car in front of me. Close call |

I've got one of these which is puzzling me. It's supposed to be 150psi but labours to get up to this pressure and then as soon as it does the safety valve blows and depressurises before the compressor cuts out. I thought the cutout switch was defective so removed it but when tested with a high pressure cycle pump it seems to work as intended (NC, opens at around 150psi, closes again at 120psi). My current plan is to derate the cut out switch to a 120/90 equivalent, are there any better ideas? Adrian Sounds more likely that the pressure relief valve needs replacing as it is out of calibration. |
