In the link above it says the bed was changed to wide in preparation for the power cross feed.

Does any one know if it is possible to retro-fit the power feed to one of these lathes without the powered feed (if all bits were available) ?

Looks like a bit of flint, maybe a Belemnite (bullet shape) fossil. Been to the beach ?

Thank you for the replies, sounds like good advice on controlled use of the MT reamer. I think i will give it a go.

The MT2 spindle bore in my tailstock has some damage i can feel, has anyone any idea of how to best clean it up ?

Has anyone any experience of using a MT reamer or any other way that proved successful ?

Although work is tight in chuck jaws it can move causing vibration/bad finish and still be tight after moving. Jaws may not be true and gripping along their length.

How much work was out of the chuck when cutting and was it supported ?

I have seen seen the bolts supporting top slide shear causing movement under load whilst top slide felt tight, also clamping on a Dickson style tool post was damaged and the tool moved under load but felt tight to the hand.

Excellent advice here, get antiviral treatment early and avoid extreme discomfort, like someone sneaking up behind you and turning a blowtorch on your skin.Had it once and don’t want a second go ! First sign for me was a feeling I’d burnt my thigh which I hadn’t.

Help...So i’ve adjusted the spindle/bearings on my Super 7 following the Myford instructions and the way described on the Myford Ltd website and still the spindle comes to s halt under power if anything other than a light force is put on it by the tail stock and i’m sure i’m not being heavy handed. It seems to be getting worse, any one got any ideas, have I missed something crucial to correct clearance ?

Thanks for the info.

Its a Hayes Diemaster and all the Horizontal surfaces suffered in storage, condensation i suspect. There are a couple of tool marks but still to be cleaned up, its the table surface that will need attention first

I am thinking of getting the surface of my new old machines table re ground as it's been standing for about 30 years, size is 26 by 9 inches. Any idea of costs to be expected or recommendations ? I'm near Bury St Edmunds.

Michael, many thanks for the link. This makes things a lot clearer. I understand getting the top bearings out is ok but after that ? There was some info. on a engraving forum but all the instructions and pictures have disappeared frustratingly.....

Has anyone any experience of taking apart one of the Taylor Hobson pantograph engraving spindles, D model type ? I can’t figure out where to begin. Also i’m looking for the collet holding version if anyone has one lying around unused. Thanks.

Yes I was trying to put a slot into a piece of 12 mm steel plate which I managed but you get the feeling the cross slide is not really up to it. The piece was mounted onto an adjustable vertical slide, older style which is lightly built. My real problem is capacity. I need to make some conical reamers up to 300 mm long, which may be possible by making up a jig to attach to the cross slide, but using a mill to do the job is pretty straight forward. I was spoilt in the past by having the use of a Bridgeport, rock solid. But it is an interesting challenge so perhaps I'll give it a go if I don't manage to find the right machine.

Thanks for the input. I think that going for a generous size is sound advice and the availability of second hand UK make mills for the price of a new import makes me think of looking out for a well looked after example. Floor standing with power to the table preferably.

Hi, I have been trying to mill on my Myford S7 but have run into problems re. capacity and lack of ridgity. Not sure about going for a new machine probably from the east or an older used UK make. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks.

Thanks for the input, I suspect a bit of swarf/debris, I'm sure it wouldn't need much. Both lathe and slide are not new so perhaps if a good clean does not sort it out then a thorough check for flatness.
