After a year or so of renovating the new house I have finally found time to play in my shed.
This arrangement allows me to cut spur gears.
I used an old bolt for the single point cutter but will be ordering a cheap set of mod 1 cutters from China.

Thanks for that, I'm at the stage of thinking about an escapement for a sidereal clock.

The spindle nose is 1/2" x 16tpi

They carry metal hand wheels for lathes, maybe they would fit the mill?

Re. the Folkestone sand pumping.
Every so often a loud clanging and banging was heard in the pipe and eventually a cannon ball would be deposited on the sand heap.
We told the manager it was skulls from a disturbed war grave at sea

use the plug but make the piece longer with a tapered lead in that you can cut away later.

The old tech scool I attended started everyone in the machine shop and carpentry shop at 11.

The metalwork master Charlie (Cog) Wheeler demonstrated the cutting eficiency of the bandsaw by bringing in some pigs trotters on the first day.
He said nothing, started the saw, sliced the trotters into little bits which he threw in the bin then said
"...the saw doesn't care. That could be your fingers, any of the machines in this shop WILL do that if you piss about with them".

There were a few scratches and minor bruises in there over the years, nothing serious, we all got worse in the corridors.

Fluke have 3 factories, 2 in PRC and one in Germany.
The Fluke multimeters are tested and callibrated on an instrument made in Deal, Kent, codename 'Baldrick'.
Each factory has 2 such testers.
The main problem in manufacture is the fake parts in the supply chain.
Even the PRC guys get caught out.

As an aprentice one of my jobs was to scrape the 'silvering' off the backs of old mirrors and save the scrapings in a bottle.
The mercury gradually fell to the bottom and was decanted off to be sold to 'the mercury man' who attended annually.

The new shed/workshop is finally erected, I've been aiming for a better set up since we got here last October.
8' x 10' from ShedsAhead of Port Talbot who did the installation.
Because of the slope and underlying limestone it sits on 18 4"x4" piles.

Next the power and light, then the benches. I've been saving the old kitchen units and worktops for this job.

The usual solution for this, when using astro telescopes, is to incorporate an absolute encoder to see actual movement rather than rely on step counting.
The cheapo diy version uses an old mouse encoder wheel.

Bit late spotting this one. I had to make 2 long clock cases in the glass works for the local time ball tower collection.
I used a 5/16 'bird mouth' hardwood moulding on the corners and 2mm picture glass for one.
The moulding could be made up from 3 x quadrants ?

3/8 x 3/8 brass angle, mitred and soldered for the other.

CAV installed new machines which upset the neighbours. We fitted tripple glazing and the walls and ceiling were foamed.
Still the noise travelled to the neighbour's houses.
Various materials were tried as insulating blocks under the machine feet, but eventually balsa wood was judged the best in this case.
