Thread: Dark Lady Clock

Would that not be plagiarism Neil? the idea is direct from Brian Hogger's comercial plans so I cannot take any credit. All I have done is modified it to use the available materials in my scrap box.

The home brew milling spindle for cutting teeth and slitting.
It needs a small motor and belt.

Coincidence? I was given a set of LAL ME taps and dies this week. 1/8, 3/16 , and 1/4 " x 40.
They seem very good, no idea how old they are.

Today I made most of the milling spindle for cutting the wheels, just need to find a small motor now, possibly a £8 'white box' B&Q drill ?

I hear you John, I'm using this project to learn how to cut better gears before I start making a sidereal clock.

Today it was the pillars, washers and cord guide.
I milled the flats on the pillars rather than filing.

I just refer to the pdf on the shed 'puta and print drawings as necessary.
The files do cover all the parts and how to make the tooling, plus Brian gives backup as required.

Day one, the plates ....

This morning I made the front and rear plates, it's a start.
Next I shall have a root round the scrap bins for some 12mm connectors to make the milling attahment.

Yesterday I purchased the plans for Dark Lady from Brian Hogger.
A first look through the instructions is quite encouraging and it may be within my capability.
Has anyone made one or have any pointers?

If you are talking about SU or Strombergs try reading Vizzard's 'tuning the A series engine'.
(He doesn't only cover bmc A's and B's)

Much testing on a gas flow bench showed a single 1 3/4" SU would flow more mixture than the more widely accepted twin 1 1/4" SU setup. (assuming the manifold wasn't strangling it).

He has several chapters on SU jets/needles/springs.

Lots of insights that go against received wisdom. For instance; traditionally, siamesed inlet ports had the web sharpened to a point where you could cut your fingers on them.
According to Vizzard's data, a blunt bullet shaped section flowed better because much of the time the mixture was flowing across the web rather than to one side or the other.

Ports were polished to mirrored perfection.
Again his data showed a slight roughness actually improved flow and helped prevent the mixture condensing on the walls.

Maybe Holt's 'seek and seal' ? if it's still available.
It's quite runny and creeps into gaps by capilliary action then sets.

re Clock:
Thanks Roy, I'll try that. It is close to timed but near the end of the pendulum travel.

27/04/2016 08:21:06

Yesterday I got an old 8 day mantle clock going. I've had it in the cupboard for 20 years or more and finally gotaroundtuit.
It needed a new pendulum suspension which I made from a 10 thou" feeler blade.

New brass hands are in the post (£1.89, can't be bad)

Today I made a new pendulum suspension for an old 8 day mantle clock (after 20 odd years I think I've finally got it), then started repairing an old steam engine for a mate.

I fitted grease nipples and grooves to my sc3 lead screw 'bearings', makes a huge difference.
Also fitted one to the apron wheel shaft while it was apart.

Yesterday I pulled the old compressor out of our dead fridge, not a whiff of gas left in the system, rather disturbing, I wonder where it went?
Makes a nice quiet compressor for the shed, good pressure but has little volume. I shall make a receiver for it one day.

The magnetic sensor on a private carpark near me will trigger if you get the engine over, or near, the sensor from the 'outside'.
It entails slowly driving your bonnet under the exit barrier until it unlocks wink
Rear engined vehicles are out of luck.

Thread: First clock suggestions
08/04/2016 16:28:40

I have never made a time piece in my life but would like to combine my other hobby of astronomy with metalworking and make a mechanical sidereal clock. Is it as simple as making the hour hand go round once/24 hours instead of twice? (and timing it to the sidereal day) or am I kidding myself?

Thread: Lady Stephanie
06/04/2016 07:46:00

Yes, I've seen some with a simple link, I was just sticking to the drawing this being my first 'real' engine.
I went up to Kew to see the Dancers End engine it is loosely based on, excellent day out.

I know what you mean about the polish, I have a thing for brass and wood.
