Thread: Adaptation of the Proxxon Milling machine
21/10/2022 11:45:38

Hi Gray,

That's fair enough, it was a tight squeeze getting the digital scales on the C5 table, in fact I didn't account for one of the reader box parts just clipping the column mount, and thus lost a bit of Y travel, which is part of the reason for this column replacement. I've actually been thinking of wiring them up to a tablet using touchDRO to get some of the extra benefits of 'proper' DROs.

Sorry to get your hopes up, but I only have the Proxxon column and column clamp, so I'll still be using the C5 head but adapted to fit this. It may end up looking a bit clunky, but as long as it improves the milling capabilities!

Maybe I'll have to start my own thread on here to document in case anyone else is interested.

Thanks,

Jamie

Very interesting work Gray.

I have recently bought a Proxxon column assembly from a PF400 that I plan to use to improve the rigidity/usability of my C5 mill somewhat. The new column, at 45mm is 10mm thicker than the Emco and has the benefit of keyed clamping block and Z leadscrew. After reading this I will definitely be checking the accuracy of my parts before I start making a new mounting clamp/base.

Your new X/Y scales look great as well, the stops are a nice addition. Do you think you might ever try to fit some digital ones on there? I just about managed to squeeze some onto my C5 table, although with the new column they may need some adjustment

Thread: Emco Compact 5 Modifications

Personally I think Neil should dedicate a whole issue just to your Emco related mods Gray!

I too have thought about adding a thrust bearing into a cross-slide bracket or handwheel to improve that situation.

I also didn't realise you could still buy new carriage units from Emco, mine must be pre 1985 as it doesn't have the backlash adjuster. I will have to look that up for a future project, do you mind me asking what the rough cost is with postage and customs these days?

Thanks,

Jamie

Thread: Adaptation of the Proxxon Milling machine

Hi Gray,

The feed unit looks great, I don't think I've seen one made for such a small machine before.

It's definitely inspiration for me to build a proper one for my Compact 5 mill table. Upto now I've been driving it with a small battery screwdriver.

In the last photo does the cross pin slide into a slot on the end of the leadscrew to drive it?

Thanks,

Jamie

Thread: Emco Compact 5 - complete newbie

I bought a new backplate for my C5 from the Ebay shop below, I think the register dia was 56mm which matched up perfectly to a small Röhm 3-jaw that I picked up. The Emco chuck I had with the lathe wasn't in great shape and runout was always an issue.

He's in Germany and seems to sell quite a few different Emco parts. This was pre-brexit though so I guess that may increase the cost if customs pick it up.

The C5 was also my first lathe/mill and has proven very capable despite it's small size.

Thread: Kennedy Power hacksaw
23/06/2021 09:48:43

Hi Jez,

Someone sent me these pics when I was doing up my Kennedy, as I was missing the adjuster rod. Also for the gaiter I struggled to find something to fit the pot, but found a bit of an old bike inner tube worked fine to stop anything getting into the oil. Hope that helps,

Jamie

Thread: Thomson-Houston Co Motor Wiring
02/12/2020 18:04:13

Hi Ric,

As John mentioned in a message above, I would definitely recommend getting hold of a Megger or similar insulation tester to test your motor. The motor I started this thread about turned out to be pretty iffy when tested, suggesting the insulation was failing despite the motor still running ok. Hence I decided it was safer to use another motor that passed the test.

I do have another older motor on my drill press and the motor is earthed with a crimped terminal connector bolted to the bare metal motor frame and then checked with a meter. Does your motor have any extra bolt holes near the wiring box? I wouldn't even plug it in without a solid earth connection.

I'm not sure about the switch question though. Hopefully someone else can help with that.

Thanks Andrew,

The other working one I have I reversed successfully by swapping the wires to A1/A2 terminals. I was thinking from what I'd read that this was maybe a split phase motor?

Thanks John, just read your comments re. sparking

motor2.jpg

So I recently picked up a 1/4hp Thomson Houston Motor in a job-lot of tools, I already have a 1/3hp one wired up in my drill press and I'd like to turn this one into a disc sander. Problem is this one is wired up differently to the running one I have already. The working one is wired to A1 and A2. Neither have capacitors so I assume they are induction motors. Neither had any instructions on the case for wiring. I wasn't sure whether this had been wired differently to work with some sort of reversing switch?

There was another thread on here with an almost identical AEI motor that also came to the conclusion that A1 and A2 were the correct wiring for motors with no capacitors.

motor1.jpg

This one has internal wires going to A2 and T2. When wired to these two I get a humming sound and no spinning so I tried moving wire T2 to A1. This got the motor running but there was a small spark at S. I stopped and tried measuring continutity/resistance to see if I could work out the different windings but the only thing I'm totally sure about is that T3 isn't connected to anything.

A2 > T2 9 Ohms

A2 > A1 22.2

A1 > T2 31

Has anyone else had one of these motors or similar and can point me in the right direction? Or does the spark mean it likely has a fault and there was a reason this wasn't wired to a plug already.

Thanks,

Jamie

Thread: Mystery Starrett vice
21/03/2019 10:41:59

Thanks for all your comments, indeed the toolmakers clamps appear in my copy of the catalogue № 23.

I realise now this doesn't show up very well in the photos but the moving jaw actually has tiny wings that extend down over the sides to keep itself square. I suppose a previous owner could have made these to replace a missing jaw but it intrigued me because I hadn't seen anything like it. Anyway, must get to cleaning it up and maybe make a copy.

I have the exact same model.

Ground vee underneath?

Can't remember where i got it from and i doubt i've used it in the last 20 odd years.

Pretty though. Innit.

Mine's flat on the bottom, but yes it is a lovely object. I guess it's small enough to use on a rule, but the laws of hoarding mean I now need to find another!

Thanks notdoneyet I will have a look through Mr Petes videos, I had thought about emailing him as he seems to be mad on Starrett.

Thanks Roy, sorry yes I meant toolmakers vice/vise!

19/03/2019 20:23:22

I bought this vice on ebay, originally thinking it was bigger than it actually is. It's stamped LS Starrett but doesn't appear to have a number anywhere on it, and having been through an old catalogue and many pages of google images I still can't find any info on it. It looks like it could be a miniature version of the toolmakers clamps but wondered if anyone had seen one before? Body is approx 2" x 1/2".

Thread: Kennedy Power Hacksaw Gaiter
17/09/2018 18:23:59

Whilst cleaning up the saw I had a brainwave about the gaiter - a section of cycle inner tube should do the job until something better turns up. I knew there was a reason I hung onto those old punctured tubes!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll see how it runs once it's cleaned up and go from there.

Bill, if I do find a suitable gaiter I'll add a link to this thread as well to help future owners.

Thanks for the gaiter suggestions everyone, will do some more hunting around. Maybe a trip to the Kempton autojumble would turn up something.

One last question whilst there's some other owners here; On the rod from cam wheel to saw head, mine has clips on the saw head pin but the other end the cam wheel shaft doesn't have a clip or even a groove to locate one. I can't tell from the pictures on lathes.co.uk whether there should be one here or if it's designed that way to give some leeway in alignment.

Closeup from Lathes page below.

Cheers,

Jamie

A Kennedy hacksaw in need of some TLC has found it's way into my possession recently! I've read the threads I've found on here as it needs a replacement spring and damper adjusting rod.

My question for other owners is where they've found suitable replacements for the rubber gaiter? The closest I've found are for generic motorbike shocks; they all seem to be quite long and don't have the narrow neck, which I assume helps keep the oil in the pot.

Thanks

Thread: Looking for Lathe Notes Vol 2 - Lindsay Publications
20/02/2015 16:13:36

Hi,

Looking for a copy of Lathe Notes Vol 2 from Lindsay Pub which is now closed and all the shops I have contacted are out of stock.

Have been given a Relmac lathe and there is some information about it in this booklet

Hoping somebody knows where I can get a copy or is willing to sell me one or even just photocopy a few pages if they don't want to sell?

Thanks,

Jamie
