Thread: Oxy Acetylene or Oxy Propane?
01/10/2018 09:17:48
I have used oxy propane for years and although never in a firebox it has been used in similar situations and find it works very well.
I have also used oxy/mapp gas for steel welding, which has also worked well.
Can't remember the make of my torch offhand but it is an Australian manufactured handset, I'm sure a BOC one would work just as well.

Bosch Rexroth for me, great unit very compact, fits in cabinet with remote panel fitted on my ML7 headstock.
No great big boxes to accommodate.
Highly recommended.

I have just noticed you have a S7, mine is only a ML7 - perhaps they are slightly different in that area?

I know I have just fixed mine but I can't remember the part you are referring to?
I heated the pulley and it came off quite nicely.

Hi Bill and welcome. Nice collection of engines you have there - is that a Sirius I spot in amongst them?
I have an inherited Sun and have made a No 4 with reversing gear.

It was me!
I had this on my ML7 and would lose drive under a heavier than light load.
Stripped spindle out and removed pulley from bronze gear. It was still a good fit so I warned the pulley and off it came.
All cleaned up and degreased I assembled it with Granville bearing fit.
Good as new!

I have a set of them.
Just need the telescope to use them!

Yes, convinced and I am currently using it as I have for the past few years just find it surprising that it's not on the pack!
Perhaps it is on a new pack, mine is quite old.

I have just had another look at my pack of original JB Weld and it makes no mention at all of fuel suitability?
Strange as I would have thought that would be a good selling point.

Jason apologies for missing that, I wonder why it's not put on the packaging and instructions?
Sounds like a solution - I shall update Edgar!

Just had a thought, at the last ally pally exhibition I was very impressed with some demonstrated aluminium solder. Seemed to give a good fillet, just the sort of thing i am after. Having a thumb through the bay there appears to be quite a selection of aluminium soldering products
Anyone had any experience of any?

Thanks guys, I have milliput and nowhere in its writeup does it even mention any type of fuel so I am thinking perhaps not. I also have some original JB weld which once again does not mention any fuel exposure.
Edgar himself suggests Bondafiller but unfortunately I think this particular product has disappeared over the years.
The rubber compound sounds good, will look into that, I guess not to be confused with silicone rubber which swells enormously!

Made a start on my new Edgar T Westbury's Centaur engine project. Started with the base, an aluminium casting with a large cavity underneath. As well as supporting the engine it acts as a fuel tank, the base of which it is suggested to bond in an alloy blanking panel.
All well and good I thought so have been cleaning up the casting and have prepared a piece of 1/8 in ally sheet ready to fill the base.
I was going to use Araldite to fix it in but am not sure about it liking being in full time contact with petrol or use something else?

I have built a couple of engines before including a Stuart no4 with reversing gear, which was quite a complex engine.
My castings arrived today for my Centaur project and having them all spread out to check they were all present and correct I thought that a newcomer could find this quite bewildering!
Tackle one piece at a time and work through methodically.

Thread: Centaur engine timing gears

The HPC gears turned up today, very quick delivery.
Nicely made pair of gears in steel which give a centre to centre working dimension of 0.795 which is not a million miles away from the original drawing dimension of 0.875.
This should result in a minimal amount of camshaft repositioning.

Great! Worth a look. I always strip down discarded stuff for anything that might be useful but I reckon my wife might notice the sewing machine not working!

I realise that ETW was using gears with different skew angles which he suggested were salvaged from motor car distributor or speedometer drives but I think the chance of finding these now is long gone!
I would imagine it is nigh on impossible to find off the shelf gearing of the original specifications.

Thanks for the heads up. I think it's a bit poor show to supply gearing that is not 'quite' suitable.
I have ordered a pair of gears from HPC Gears, who have a fantastic range.
I will be ordering castings from Reeves and I will suggest that they use HPC as a supplier as the gears are far closer to the original spec. Looks to be a lovely engine, looking forward to getting started!

Yes I think your correct - rh, looking at the drawing the gears are described as skew gears but do appear to have teeth sketched on them and are rh.
Thanks all.
