If you have a problem with neighbours about machine noise I would try it with some bits of carpet underneath the stand legs, if it's quiter than go for it otherwise don't bother

The Cap gives the start windings a kick ! If it runs in one direction OK then the cap would seem OK ! Changing the cap polarity will do no good, it's the star windings that dictate rotation ! It sounds as though the reversing switch has a problem. What goes, an MCB or an RCD ? Where are you ? Noel.

A little further update. I had another look at it today, and at first it was running well in both directions, and I let it run for a while (15 minutes) firstly I noticed a little smoke coming from it (but no smell of electrical burning, may be a bit of oil or dirt, I don't think the machine has been used for 10 years!!) and the motor was hot (nearly too hot to hold my hand on it, so casing 40-50 degrees?)

Then on trying to restart it when it is hot, just as yesterday, works fine in reverse, but trips the MCB on starting in Forward.

I think the switch on back to front may be a red herring, I wonder if before we were given the lathe the previous owner tried to fix something..

Im thinking the motor is buggered, but still curious why only one direction trips the fuse.

That hot after 15minutes Is like my old motor, which also drew 10A instead of 5A, at 20minutes it tripped the built in thermal cut-out. A new motor fixed it.

As Noel implies the same parts of the motor operate regardless of direction the motor runs.

I would look at the switch wiring, including the motor end for chafing or poor terminations. I suspect someone has been fiddling and failed to find the switch issue.

Thread: Lathe cutting tool height

It looks to me that the tool it's self was causing this, the older forged tool needed to wear to be put on centre, the later Armstrong pattern holder used an entirely different straight blank

I really don't get this post.

Things must have changed at RDG/Myford ( they are owned by the same family) 5 years ago someone would have been prepared to tell you to screw the plate onto the lathe spindle, measure the gap across the chuck back and turn a step in the edge of plate to match. That said I recently got a 125mm backplate for a Boxford with a 75mm chuck recess from them which had a recess over 80mm wide so fits a 75mm chuck after turning it down .

I have a 731 without memofix, very basic, had to replace a bulb with an led. it now only works reliably in one direction and loose track on the return.

Try the pulley first -- 71 is too slow if 119 is too fast, I don't think 119 too far off to worry about.

I would look for a small machine shop in your area and give them the dimensions of the bed. They would be able to assess the problem and even a milled surface would be plenty good enough for a home shop machine. They will have the means to sit it on a mill bed.

As above or some who does engine reboring which ever is nearer.

We don't have many or even any garages that could carry that out in the UK.

The Germans had some brilliant designers and engineers where pressed metal construction and fabrication was concerned. Nobody else seemed to be even close

The MG42 for instance was considered to be a war austerity design when first captured by the allies and it took them a while to twig to its simple reliable cheap design brilliance

And it's insatiable need for massive amounts fresh pointy metal brrrrrrrrup

Maybe drill wander has given you a curved hole round a harder inclusion. Sometimes the scrap doesn't mix so well. I have some 3" u channel that has hard spots that won't drill.

Steve,

You have three separate problems in reality.

1 you are starting to go around the circle again

2 spindle speed

3 table feed speed

2 can be fixed with the 12" countershaft pulley solution from page 2 that you suggested and from Jasons post gives you 80, 250, 750 spindle speeds that you seem to have rejected for some reason. 90 is fine for slitting saws on my Centec 2A. Keep the smaller pulley and belt in the drawer for when you want to use end mills ( assuming you can find /make a B&S taper cutter holder.)

3 is based on feed speeds for a 12 tooth cutter. Buy cutters that have a tooth count matching the machine.

Parts of a power feed cone clutches?

The splined box spanner might be a tappet adjusting tool given the cutouts, though why have a splined nut?

I’m not starting a new thread, because there are several already …

Had a call today from 01133506079

g to be Microsoft

I wasn’t in the mood for playing, so I simply responded: No you’re not, you lying ****h, now just ***s off !

A few moments later she called back, saying: How dare you speak to me like that, you bloody old man ?

To which I simply replied: I’ve got your number and I know where to report it.

Now the interesting point to this is that she identified me as being OLD … which suggests that these might be targeted calls, rather than them just working through a list of names and numbers.

It's the Dithers The Gardener voice that does it.

Just search Google for lathe plenty will turn up. Lathe faults will give you some of the downside. This link will tell you what older machines like the Myford come with.

The below link to a recent thread is what you can get at the budget end of new

Spindle bearing grease? | Model Engineer (model-engineer.co.uk)

Basically it's a gut feeling choice for either new or old then either bench or stand.

But what you don't want to do is buy new and then leave it in the box for a couple of years till the warranty expires.

I wonder if it would work out cheaper for a UK manufacturer to ship their product to China (in bulk) not paying VAT as overseas sale, and then have the Chinese send it back to UK customers dodging the VAT? Not sure about the UK but in the USA there have been complaints that the way the postal service cross charges international mail the Chinese get to send stuff almost for nothing, helping to undercut local products.

That is because the ROC government pays for most of the shipping of Chinese products, so defrauding the ROC might lead to unpleasant consequences.

Reminds me of a story from the 70's

There was a new multi-story carpark built in Aston B'ham not far from the HP Sauce factory that was not built strong enough for cars and ended up being the home of the West Mids police mounted unit.

Truth or fiction? Not sure, but we thought it funny.

It's definitely a Major MD30B apart from the single pinch bolt all the specs are for the major.

In which case yours was half price and I'm glad I said IF it's a Minor smiley note one was sold twice
