Milling cutters come in standard sizes, your machine only needs 4 or 8 (16mm is the largest) if you go both metric and imperial. However they put the head right down on the job and it's hard to see whats going on. |

Hi to all providing valued advice. Has anyone run a bead of weld and then lathed and milled new tooth or best to get new cluster? Kind regards Neville in New Zealand. I tried that with an unknown rod previously used on an exhaust manifold, which it did fine. No pre-heat, run a bead then another on top (only 16dp) mount the gear cutter on the mill and ----- knock knock etc killed the cutter. Can't really file it either, grinder took forever. So yes you can weld it with the right rod or else... The rods work at a lower current than steel ones, but in the UK 99% nickel rods are £8 for two rods, then you need a cutter £20 ish. Assuming you already have an arbor to mount it on, a stick welder and a dividing head. Or. As Noel is suggesting. You get another 21 tooth gear with matching DP and PA, trepan out the centre, turn all the teeth off the busted gear to match the id of your new/old gear ring and loctite 603 the two together. |

On the M62 around Leeds it is not unusual to have a different speed limit set on 3 or 4 consecutive gantries - strange how the non-sensical 40 limit that comes after a 60 is on the gantry that has the speed camera on it & the following gantry goes 60 again. Happens this way too often not to be intentional. Nigel B. Highways would call that managing the flow of traffic, I call it a work experience day in the control room. It's worse when you get close to a blank gantry @ 70 and you see the 50 flick up on the next one. Ruins the next fortnight for you. |

Sam, it may soon be possible to use the footpath for its intended purpose as they make it an offence at a local level to park a vehicle on them. Of course that is if the cyclists allow you to use this newly freed space. Not freed up for E-scooters then??? No need to, they use them anyway. |

hi thanks for all the replies and so quick as well. ive only ever seen 1 set turn up on evilbay and i missed them. my problem is i work away from home long hours so i dont get much time to scroll through looking everyday. so i know this sounds almost selfish but id rather just get a full set if there metric or imperial off the shelf ready to be fitted and get up and going.
You can save an Ebay search and get it to email you when one gets posted so you don't have to continuously check. |

Once you have machined soft jaws at one point moving them to any other position tells you only one thing, they were not machined at that point and there is some runout that may be due to the jaws or may be due to the scroll or may be due to the chuck. In other words it tells you nothing of use. Martin C With respect, it would tell me not to spend money on it if it went say 10thou out. |

What runout does the arbour show? The drive pullies will show more than 1 thou runout and the belts won't care. BTW there are some £25 gear cutters out there that have a lot more run out than that.

Starting the new year by recomissioning my Harrison toolkmakers lathe which has patiently sat in the workshop for the last 15 months. It has what I think is a Bison 3 jaw chuck. It is 6" dia. The chuck jaws have bolt on jaws, which are badly worn. Ideally I would like to get new jaws, but new soft/hard jaws would also be an option. The bison jaws (not the bolt ons) are stamped "3500". Does this mean any jaws stamped 3500 will fit - ie does this refer to the scroll teeth and other dimensions? Some suppliers seem to sell 3500/3200 jaws. Are these the same? Sorry for the daft questions, but I do hope someone can just reassure me.

John, If those jaws are hard ones then using the least worn of the 4 possible clamping faces and using a known pre turned round bar test how much run out the chuck has. If they are soft jaws, which I hope they are, true them up and using a known pre turned round bar test how much run out the chuck has. The chuck scroll may be bad as well. |

but find driving in the dark with the poorly set oncoming HID headlights difficult to the point of being dangerous and on an undulating road(bumpy) far from good. HID's have to auto adjust and they are not as common as you think. My father said the same thing (though not HID's) and we put it down to the join in his bifocals flaring. Now I get similar trouble with head light glare so it may be old eyes after all. |

The BS0 100mm centre height size is still pretty heavy. Universals tend to loose their gear sets and weigh even more. Don't forget it's your headroom - 100mm - 40mm = what size range you can cut on a horizontal. Edited By Dave Halford on 28/12/2021 11:49:20 |

Most speedo's are set 10% fast but be careful when using your Sat Nav as there is approx 4 second delay between you passing a speed limit sign and your Sat Nav changing to the new speed. Martin P You need to watch that 10% rule. Toyotas read 10% high, which is why you gat flashed by irate drivers assuming you are a speeding maniac while they trundle along at 63. That's also why trucks pass you in 50mph road works zones. However speedos vary from maker to maker, for ex my Jeep reads spot on speed. Some council run cameras are quite leinent like the French one mentioned earlier, others are spot on. Smart motorway ones are average speed so slow down a lot and you might get away with it. |

Be careful what you wish for! Two reasons why doing away with the licence fee is bad: one is the disadvantage of losing the only impartial broadcaster with a public service ethic, the other is it will hasten the end of easy to use telly.
The BBC's Charter calls for it to 'to act in the public interest, serving all audiences through the provision of impartial, high-quality and distinctive output and services which inform, educate and entertain'. Other providers have no such constraints, leaving their audiences prey to propaganda, extremist opinion, and get-rich-quick schemes. I suggest it's bad for democracy to only have broadcasters who reflect the opinions of their owners, advertisers, or the government of the day. Essential in my opinion for all politicians to be tested and held accountable by an informed electorate. No letting idiots off the hook just because I happen to be a fan-boy! Dave BBC impartial, you have to be joking! IMO the BBC has had it's day, not all their programmes are free, they are partners in Britbox for example. Their news reports are no longer unbiased and their editors censor so much actual news. So-called news is more speculative these days than a report of an event.They pay so-called celebrities vast sums of money (ours presumably) to try and keep pace with the commercial stations. Personally I don't care who reads the news and a salary of £500k plus, seems over the top for me as a license payer, and I won't even go into football presentation! When abroad they won't allow you to access their live programmes on-line even though our close neighbours across the North Sea regularly watch for free! As someone has already said, the fee is tax and they should be open about that. + one on this. There was a day when the news was impartial and the facts were reported, now we get opinions from the news teams that are quite partisan.
