Thread: Models stolen, Lancashire

Henderson up and overs have a brass locking pin it's a well known dodge that forcing the handle breaks the pin.

and there goes the door open.

1 Replace the pin with a lump of stainless steel., soon fixes that

2 I also fitted an old 3 level backdoor lock in the lower side of the door. matching the key hole is the biggest issue. Better than a rack bolt.

3 Alarm your garage door, they dont expect it and they ran off! You need a roller shutter alarm switch for that.

Thread: Does round plastic drive belt warp?
06/03/2016 20:04:14
Posted by frank brown on 06/03/2016 19:15:00:

The round belting(green) I bought has got an extremely rough surface and runs my Geo Thomas drill with the belt being extremely slack.. The previous belt, round, red and smooth, just got rotted (by the sun?) and fell into many pieces.

Frank

I had some red do that after 15 years in the cupboard, it's just age.

When ever I have had cast iron welded the weld is incredibly hartd, a file will not touch it .

Martin

Um, yeah I've been that stupid too. surpriseIf the rods have got any FE in them that happens.

What you need is pure nickel rods, needless to say these are the expensive ones, and you can machine nickel

Thread: Wet Belt

Interesting link

Obsessing about engine noise

My lad got a Nissan leaf, all right he can fuel it for nothing currently :O) and it's deathly silent backing off the drive, but take it down the road at 30 and the tires put as much row as my Jeep does.

rubber cracks with age which is why cam belts have a life span of xx years OR 80K miles. Tires are worse because of UV damage as well. The tire might be 2 years old before it even goes on a new car.

Thread: new forward stop reverse swtich
17/02/2016 12:58:41

A lot of drum switches are not intended to go from forward to reverse under power. The off on mine isn't quite off and blows the fuse

Most drums can be dismantled and sorted out.

Dont think most push button controllers will replace a drum switch. Polarites need reversing.

Thread: surface rust on lathe ways

Story was 3 M pan scrubbers used carborundum, much better to use wire wool if you must.

Secret rust remover might have been Molasses.

Thread: Centec 2A Refurb
11/01/2016 19:44:36

It is running a single phase motor which doesn't quite have the oomph to turn the vertical head in the higher gears/speeds

With the drive belt removed the VH should turn stiff by fingers on the drawbar end. If not it could be old hard grease as it sets over the years.

The grease nipples encourage you to load lots of grease in when the angle drive should be in an oil bath not a grease bath. If the dip stick comes out all greasy and stringey, give it a bit of a clear out.

either way it's easy to pull the front off to check

Thread: Hacksaw blades

It's always possible we are running into counterfeit blades and they are just not what they purport to be.

Thread: Hard spots in mild steel
17/08/2015 12:44:11

I would blame recycled steel. I dont think they stir it much :O)

I've drilled a 1950's era 3" U section girder that had soft bits and hard bits with the same drill so it's not a modern problem

Thread: Angle Grinder Safety
17/08/2015 12:32:51

Once you have used it a few times most things are just common sense.

Like not directing a stream of white hot sparks at your self cos it stings a bit. and not at glass or your car because it's still hot enough to melt it's way into the paint or glass from several Metres away.

You can use thick gloves as an additional spark shield when sparks bounce of other stuff and hit you

And it's best not to start up the grinder when touching the work as even the little ones can kick a bit

Thread: Insulated Garage Doors
17/08/2015 12:17:50

Roller doors are not sectional doors

I fitted 40mm sectional electric doors aftre the old henderson fell to pieces. I got condensation on the outside of the panels to within 1 inch of both the joins and edges this winter and 10deg inside from house leakage.

You can get insulated roller shutter doors - they need loads of headroom for the roll and given each panel is only 2inches wide you have lots of gaskets to leak instead of 4 and lots of noise to operate.

One thing to consider is if this is the only access to the garage you need a lockable manual release in case of power cuts or or blown fuses. Else you'll be removing roof tiles to break in. Very few suppliers seem to bother with this.

Mine has a yale type key for manual that does not look like a handle.

i fitted mine during a full day with only a bit of help from the lad to lift the panels

Thread: Why on earth did I do that...
21/07/2015 10:42:58

Might make an interesting thread.

Whyoh why did I use a random cast iron welding rod that I'd had for 20 years to try a tooth repair on my rockwell 10" back gear. And why did I then compound the issue by using my rare as hens teeth new 16dp 20pa gear cutter on said welding.

What i ended up with is weld that will just about file and very nearly as hard as witches what'its and a Very, Very blunt cutter that i need to grind 2mm off to get right.

Sob !!!

Thread: Sievert burners flame profile
03/07/2015 12:34:46

Thought the cyclone got its extra heat from doing away with the blue cone therefore anywhere in the flame should be the same.

I get a 1/2 inch long visable flame out of mine, if it disappears inside the tube I know I've got another gas blockage to clear.

Flame touching the work seems best.

Thread: Recognising tooling quality levels?
23/06/2015 10:13:14

'i'd rather not wait until the Autumn shows.' Could be a bad choice to make.

I've done a lot of comparing at shows and while you cant check runout if they didn't bring the machine you want.If they do, you can and it's all under one roof.

You can see the difference in finish quality, some have obvious machining errors and come in a box badly made of terrible wood. Then you look at something with Vertex or HBM written on it and you realise why they cost a few pounds more. The difference is night and day.

I've bought stuff from Rotagrip thats cheap Chinese and good, also RDG.

i've not used Arceuro, but they seem to care about the quality of their stock against it's cost.

i have a Nearok driil from the 80's that clatters like crazy as the spline is very poor indeed. You look at back issues of ME and theres usually someone on the letters page complaining of poor quality far east kit.

So ti's not a new issue either.

You can get big bags of the stuff at proper garden centers

I would buy the best table (bet it's not got Soba written on it) and use an adapter plate. Simples
