OK, Could be long so go get a coffee. First off a bit of background. I have been involved with Mach since part way thru Mach 2 which was a good advance into CNC but in all fairness it was buggy and part way thru Art Fenerty, the writer, realised he had started off on the wrong foot and couldn't alter the core of the program to make advances. If you go into help about in Mach there is a rolling credit screen of a lot of the people how helped. It was during this time I got to know Art well and have met him a couple of times and also during this time we were making the bolt on CNC kit for the X3, there was no Super X3 at this point. This kit sold really well and got a lot of people into CNC......

Thanks BAnder, That really helpful, |

Ive been trying without much luck to find a topslide for my Atlas 10FV At the moment it is fitted with a third party T slotted cross slide with a tool post block bolted to it, which is ok in its self , but obviously the option of a compound slide would be better.
So in the absence of the original part I thought it may be possible to fit a Myford ML7 cross slide in combination with some of what Ive got. I am sure there may be some height difference, so could anyone give me the dimension from the bottom of the protractor to the top of the top slide (base of the tool post) it would be extremely helpful!
Picture below of what's on there now

So what about this eccentric tool, seems like it can do it all. except internal threading? |

Thanks you all for the replies, some great information there, its a minefield for the beginner with so many types and grades of tool, but not clearly standardised by some manufacturers. HSS should be ideal, after all I use HSS for drilling and tapping of Stainless steel, but there is a such a good press of indexable carbide tooling that Its difficult to make the right choice I'll take a look at jbcutting tools Vic thank you. What about cutting angle ive seen LH and RH turning tools at 93 degrees as well as 75 degrees, what does that mean to the end user, is that rate of removal and therefore more required torque and added heat to the workpiece? Still confused but getting there! Thanks for the help so far. |

I'm looking for my first set of lathe tools So Ive been looking at these sets: Glanze turning parting Threading Boring & Knurling Set 5/8 Size (Ref: 977720) Soba Turning - Parting - Threading Boring & Knurling Set 3/8 Size (Ref:977701) And this 9 piece from rdg http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/9PC-Turning---Boring---Parting-and-Grooving-Tool-Set-10mm-Shank-34554332.html#SID=535
I want to be able to do some threading, a knurling tool would be useful and I intend to progress to Stainless steel in the coming months Does anyone have any good advice on the makes and sets above, is there something else I should be looking for? Is thicker better? I can use up to 12mm on my tool post should I be going as big as I can or is there advantage to smaller tools The set from RDG looks good but no info on the insert size. Any and all advice very welcome! cheers Ben |

I think I'm going to do the same! So its out next week? I was so excited reading the last issue, I never realised there was a magazine devoted to the engineering workshop!. excellent magazine. I scoured every news agent I passed today, about 6 in total but no joy |

I cant find this months MEW on sale anywhere, I can download it but i'd rather have hard copy.
On the plus side I picked up my new lathe today, and its a 10 - F !! Power cross feed, brilliant looks like the previous owner spent some time restoring it too. Very pleased |

Hi, You should get a copy of MEW 226, out right now. John Harris has a good article covering his treasured Atlas 10F. I know i couldn't believe it! I havent manged to pick up a copy yet though. It doesn't have much with it , a set of change wheels and a couple of chucks, but its a good start. I'll see if I can beg any more tools to go with it, to get me going. |

Hi all, Ive just been offered an Atlas 10D, not sure of the age. Ive done some research and come back with mixed views. Does anyone here have one, love it hate it? Should I avoid it or if its cheap enough would it be a good buy? I dont know what they sell for. I hope someone can help with some advice, obviously its rather old, but looks in good condition. |
