Thread: Aerospece grade aluminium tubing

That application is begging for Carbon Fibre Tube, if it had been available in the 60s the original designer would have used it for a tonearm

Andrew,
The Siemens documentation is very good, you shouldn't have any problems,

Thread: Mach 3 doesnt see UC100 contoller

Posted by Zan on 07/03/2018 23:56:17:

No coms port, that's why I went for the uc100 which is fed by USB cable. I tried 3 port cards before splashing out on the uc, non worked due to address conflicts. In anycase coms port is obslete and if my computer gives up the ghost I'd be back to square one.

If you haven't dealt with all the power management settings on the USB you are ignoring the major issue with lost Communication on USB devices.

Thread: Brass insert

You can put a lock nut on the front

06/06/2018 20:50:04

Drill and tap a small length of bar in the lathe, mark chuck jaw to work alignment if not using a collet chuck.

Counter-bore the back to allow the screw to fit with the tip level with or proud of the front surface.

Flip around again and machine to accept your insert.

I use a Gravograph pantograph style engraving spindle on a sprung slide with a Gravograph 3D contour following nose to CNC engrave to a set depth on uneven surfaces with no requirement to model the surface being engraved.

Clive, I am sure that VFDs do not change the supply voltage. I may be wrong, but don’t think so - they alter the frequency - it is in the name and that seems to say it all. Also, reducing the motor power was the requirement from the start of the thread.

Some Vector Drive VFDs increase current (and thus voltage) at any speed when RPM drop is detected in order to maintain the set speed

Posted by Colin Whittaker on 27/05/2018 10:12:15:

Not,

Given that Torque is constant (and within rated speeds it is) and that Power output in induction motors is proportional to (RPM x Torque), this renders any suggestion of constant power with varying speed erroneous.

The actual case is therefore that a conventional induction motor produces it's rated power at the rated RPM when driving a load at maximum torque, reduction in speed results in a reduction in power, the exact result of an increase in speed depends upon the electrical characteristics of the individual motor.

Thanks for all the replies - I might give Manista a try as there is supposedly a stockist near me. Alternatively if Nick H wouldn't mind living only until he is 115 I wouldn't mind putting in a bid for one of his gritty gold bars! Bob

Bob,
PM me your address and I'll bung you a bar in the post free gratis and all that

I use Lava Soap, I bought a lifetime's supply of ex-RS Components stock from a clearance warehouse about 10 years ago, at this rate I should hit 120 years old or so, even though I keep giving away some of the small size bars

Thread: Morse taper spec.

Posted by Maurice on 25/05/2018 22:12:09:

My question was not really about how to set the correct angle, it was really about why each size seems to vary erratically by tiny amounts from one size to the next. It seems to make no sense!

Why does the sun come up in the morning? Are the stars just pin holes in the curtain of night?

Like all other random engineering stuff it was decided before there was anyone to indulge in debating the reasons on the internet leaving us with the choice to deal with it or use something else :D

Even on an oil-free type?

Oil free means no oil in the air delivery, not no oil in the pump.

Not so, it often means oil free, diaphragm pumps don't have a sump with oil in, all the rotation is dealt with by sealed bearings and there is no piston, they're far noisier than conventional compressors and have a far shorter service life

Thread: Polishing mops
19/05/2018 11:25:50

Lost a thumb when his glove got caught?
On what did his glove get caught? I can only assume it was the work as any polishing set up which is not a horrendous bodge offers no scope for the tooling to grab a glove.
I think the reason "Gloves are Dangerous" around polishing wheels is the same reason that "Tool Racks are Dangerous" on the wall behind machine tools

Thread: Myford Super 7 VFD Controls & Clutch Switch

Posted by Pete Rimmer on 12/05/2018 20:35:04:

What is the microswitch for Nick? An electrical interlock for the belt lever?

Sorry Pete, I missed that.
No, it's on the clutch lever, it stops the motor at the end of travel just after the clutch is out and starts the motor again as you bring the lever away from it's end of travel just before the clutch is in, there is now an interlock switch on the spindle lock pin though.

Since the video I've also changed the VFD modulation frequency to eliminate the audible ringing.

and thaiguzzi slags him off

Although he made a fairly blunt point that's an over-sensitive view of it, and he's perfectly right about polishing and gloves not being the anathema that turning and gloves or milling and gloves are.
For small parts gloves may help even more as much or more as small parts heat up very quickly

Thread: Superglue for holding workpieces
17/05/2018 18:16:20

I use activated cyanoacrylate to hold Titanium, D2 Tool steel, Gauge Plate and other sheet materials down to Aluminium tooling plates for profile cutting, it's a very useful technique. I use carpet tape for acrylic and Carbon Fibre sheets.

Thread: What DRO for a Myford
13/05/2018 20:17:58

Neil,
You can use a section of heavy U channel and a spacer to move the taper turning attachment away from the back of the lathe, making space in the channel for a DRO scale between the lathe and attachment,

Nick

Thread: Myford Super 7 VFD Controls & Clutch Switch
13/05/2018 20:08:38

Neil,
The whine is just ringing, I'll tune the VFD modulation frequency at some point but it's the camera mic gain making it seem louder than it is.
The reason to have the motor off when the lathe isn't cutting is that most lathes designed as 3 phase machines work that way, the only reason for running a motor for more of the time is if it's a single phase motor with start windings and the associated lower starting torque and risk of start winding overheat with constant starts & stops.

Nick
