Thread: Why is electricity so expensive?
07/04/2022 11:48:44

It's interesting to look at some global realities. Petrol in Venezuela at 2p a litre. China responsible for 35% of global co2 averaging 1.5 times us per head. The USA using 3.5 times us per head and about 25% global. And a Russian tank on 1 mile per gallon diesel. UK responsible for circa 1% global emissions and pretty good figures per head but only around 1% saving per head over 20 years. Stuff may be more efficient but everyone has more stuff.

I have a plan based on large treadmill drums in city centres. Schoolkids PE lessons sorted, cheap gym memberships, special wheels for the Zimmer impaired and a requirement for everyone to earn treadmill points for NHS access or air travel. Cheap leccy and a fit population plus it warms you up so no heating bills. Sorted.

Indeed we need an increase in national insurance to help pay for the NHS cos 350 million a week isn't enough.

In which case you need a different technological solution. Sadly Fusion will be 30 years away and always will be but there are guys working on ideas such as this one:

London's population has been variable historically. Around 9 Million during the war and when I was at Uni in the late 60's it was 8 Million. Indeed it dropped to it’s lowest for a long time in the 80's
Traffic chaos is a function of most capital cities going back to ancient Rome with fringe parking plans, one-way streets and pedestrianized streets.
And large capital projects have always been an opportunity for opportunists to line their pockets and long been sold to the public at estimated costs and delivery times well below realism.

I didn't think water was nationalised but I have my own borehole and reed-bed sewage so the only bills are for electricity for its pumps and (so far) one replacement pump and a couple of pressure vessels.
Nationalisation of old lead to a top-heavy idle workforce, poor public investment and a union stranglehold, although i do agree that basic utilities should belong to us rather than be sold abroad for a fast money-raising exercise to waste on the next vanity project.

Thread: Best way to reduce a piece of 1/8"thk brass sheet to 3/32" thk.
05/04/2022 09:47:55

I'm a bit confused re having 1/8 stock but no 1/32 - not sure I see the relevance. As to how to hold 1/8 sheet to reduce to 3/32 must depend on how much you have and how much you need. Can you not just bolt/screw some to a backing piece (MDF?) by it’s edge and thin out enough from the centre for the requirement?

A common mantra is "You get what you pay for". So I'm pleased with the price increase, indicating much better quality electrons than the ones sold before. I'm still worried about French electrons. A background of soft cheeses and high fat odd-shaped bread rolls isn't a good look for the hard electricity I want with a long use-by date. It was bad enough in the 50's when we were promised nuclear would be so cheap they wouldn't charge for it - so poor quality they took those off the market.

Thread: What adhesive - that shrinks when it sets - do you recommend for melamine laminate sheets?
03/04/2022 14:58:56

As an off-topic;ish thought does the glue really matter? If one placed the two boards together with any gap-filler (say water) and applied an air-tight edging then air pressure/vacuum would hold those boards together? Indeed, the thinnest layer of any thin bonding agent that can occupy any gaps would be the best?
I'm minded of the time I built some fitted wardrobes into an old house with lathe and horsehair plaster walls with a tendency to crumble. I glued a 12 foot length of 1/2 in baton to the wall with PVA and held with a few of pins until it set and was able to suspend my 110kg by the fingertips from it just by the sheer area.

Trim the broken ends and bond into a pair of threaded gizmos for the ultimate in collapsible batons or as suggested fishing rod joiners. If sleeving the break it may be worth looking at arrow shafting if there is suitable size.

Thread: M 1.4 threaded steel rod
02/04/2022 09:33:26

Looking on Veterinary Instrumentation's site there's 1.25mm arthrodesis wire and 1.5mm threaded rod available.

https://veterinary-instrumentation.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/6118/s/arthrodesis-wires-125mm-long/category/1094/

https://veterinary-instrumentation.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/6129/s/fully-threaded-arthrodesis-wires/category/1108/

Without looking further I’d speculate that Imperial sizes are available from a US orthopaedic supplier or an Indian/Pakistani supplier who sells to the US. How accurate any of these dimensions are might need checking. Also the thread on arthrodesis wire will be designed for holding in bone - would likely be fine in a denser timber but also may not be 'standard' if wanting to use off the shelf nuts.

If stuck for finding a material to make your own from then I offer the suggestion of Kirschner wires - surgical stainless steel used (usually) as temporary pins in bone reconstruction or for attaching small fragments. Available in lengths upto about 300mmm but with one or both ends sharpened usually as spade ended.
I did see some on eBay in sizes near to your need - 1.2mm and 1.4mm were available but I’m sure an orthopaedic supplier would stock 1.3mm ("veterinary instrumentation" as an example)

Edit - for some reason my brain read that you wanted 1.3mm until I posted and reviewed the title

Old Mart,

My previous Motorola phone died recently a d was replaced with a Moto G 60 s and due to no cell service out here is on 1p. Much to my surprise I discovered that it will accept WiFi calling despite 1p not officially offering that. And it's not a terribly expensive phone. Also picks up a signal way closer to home than the old one. No need to climb the hill first..

Such panels are usually used in suspended ceilings? If so then there would be a void above the back of the panel as additional cooling. How are they used if set against a plasterboard ceiling? Attached directly or some sort of enclosure?

Thread: Large Scale Heat Pumps
24/03/2022 09:34:42
Posted by Phil Whitley on 23/03/2022 19:17:37:

All human activity on the planet produce about 45 Gigatons of CO2 per annum, the planet naturally produces 750 gigatons of CO2 per annum. The level of CO2 in the atmosphere is increasing linearly per annum by a very small amount. All the efforts, COPconferences, and measures taken so far to reduce CO2 have made no difference whatever to the gradual linear rise in CO2. The planet is measurably and visibly greening. When there is a rise in global mean surface temperature, evaporation from the sea increases, and there is also some increase in offgassing of CO2 from the sea. This leads to more rain, and better conditions for plant growth. Plant life increases and absorbs the available CO2.

Phil

The blunt fact remains that CO2 levels are increasing wherever you choose to put the blame.
this

https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn11638-climate-myths-human-co2-emissions-are-too-tiny-to-matter/

You can choose to claim that it's fossil fuels, or deforestation or decomposition of human corpses but the inevitable truth is that to reduce that increasing CO2 and the potential catastrophes of its increase requires the intervention of man to reduce his impact.

I do feel that my efforts to reduce any sea level rise would be as well attempted baling the Atlantic with a teaspoon in the face of global profligacy and warfare.

It's noted today on the BBC news that since 1900 we've lost orchard land to the size of the Isle of Wight whereas logically by population it should be more than doubled - instead we transport and import because it's beneath our dignity to pick fruit?

A vertical plumb-bob for use in flooded cellars?
For stretching heat shrink when you bought a size too small?
For stippling the top of a pastry pie and contouring icing?
