Thread: How to chuck a bolt head |
23/09/2022 14:08:08 |
Hi Bill, I'm afraid I'm not a model engineer more of a mechanical engineer where I build, repair and service small engines mostly on garden machinery. I was lucky enough to buy my lathe when a work colleague, (when I was working, now retired), offered it for sale as his grandfather had died and he needed to clear out his work shop for a giveaway price which included many and I mean tools and accesories for it. I joined the forum to enable me to ask what most on here would consider beginners questions and have been lucky to receive really excellent information. I realised I should have used mm not cm, but I formed the question late one night and was obviously not fully awake.

How do I attach the pics? I know I could grind down the bolt but as I have the lathe I'd like to do the job properly |

Thank you Nigel, I was a bit concerned my question was worded incorrectly which attracted comments. I have a high tensile bolt that is 15cm long and need to reduce the bolt down in size for 4cm from the end to enable it to fit through a hole in a clutch assembly. I added a link to the thread which shows the puller. I will take a photo of the bolt placed next to the one I am trying to replace and paste it here |

here's the link showing the tool I am looking to replace the bolt

The bolt is part of a puller to remove a clutch assembly on a lawn mower, I'll post a photo of it later

Should read 15cm |

Thanks guys, great ideas. Just to confirm Im looking to turn down a 40cm length of the bolt's thread as I'm making a puller that the end needs to fit into a shaft hole. |

Whilst it may sound a straightforward question, I need to turn down 40cm off the end of a high tensile bolt for a project in y Myford ML7. Does anyone have a ny tips on how to set up the hex bolt in the jaws so that I can machine the end of the bolt |
Thread: Holding a clutch cone in a lathe |

Thanks Hward I'll take a look at that

Hi guys, need some help with this. I have a conical cone that is the inner cone on a cone clutch from a rotivator I am currently restoring. I need to take off circa 5mm from the back edge of the cone to give enough clearance for the cone to move inwards and therefore disengage the clutch. I'm really struggling to work out how to hold the cone in a lathe, can anyone help? I have a photo to show the cone if it helps |

I've just found a Record 84 quick release vice in the workshop I'd forgotten I had. It's got 4½" jaws and is in good condition. I asked a mate the other day what the different model numbers m,ean on these vices and he didn't know, does anyone on the forum know? Cheers, Phil.

Not sure if it's OK to state here, but I have a Record DMD 24A drill I'm looking to sell. It's for sale elsewhere for £180 but open to offers with pick up only from Salisbury. Phil |
Thread: Myford ML7 Levers |

OK, found the cap screw, any idea what size it is as Ican't get to it without shortening a cap wrench? I've noticed the wedge is connected to the gear so should I run the lathe with it connected or disconnected as I don't think I'll need the slow speeds at the moment? Thanks again for all your help. Cheers, Phil.

Thanks Les, That makes sense. Regards, Phil. |
19/09/2014 09:08:07 |
Wow, thanks guys for all this info. I'll take a looki tonight. So how should I run the lathe, or put another way, which is the faster spindle speed? Sorry to sound thick but I've always thought it's better to ask than guess and cause damage. Cheers, Phil.

Thanks Phil, I'll take a look tomorrow when I get home for the bull wheel socket cap screw although I can't remember seeing one? Many thanks, Phil.
