Thread: Time for a name change?

... well that got the sort of replies I expected and woke the place up for a few minutes wink

CNC does not de-skill someone, it just changes the skills used for achieve an end product. ...........

Martin

I quite agree Martin. It moves the main skills needed away from mechanical engineer to computer programmer.

I've no quarrel with that - I spent much of my working life as an computer network manager.

Maybe that's why I prefer not to have computers in my hobby workshop.

What's you view on the proliferation of computer controlled machinery into model or hobby engineering? When so much equipment can now be bought to eliminate hand skills might not a better name be computer numerical controlled model engineering – CNCME?

As Brian Abbott recently said in post about part of his project...

“Thanks both, unfortunately the only skill I applied to these was to program the machine and clamp them in the vice.”

Thread: Simple Free Circuit Simulator

Had one of those many years ago and still mainly all Kenwood, TS850, TS2000 etc.

That's neat! Probably use that in another hobby (amateur radio) as well.

Thanks

There was, sometime ago, a big discussion on one of the woodworking forums as the the correct "Record Blue".

Turned out that the manufacturers had changed it over the years and there is no one Record Blue or any way to find out when the colours were changed.

So any close blue will do.

Thread: Turning job - persistant errors

In the past I've had similar problems which were solved (as Michael suggests) by ...

"Forget the screw thread ... just assemble with 638 Loctite"

Thread: How are people finding Windows 10?
30/12/2015 21:29:12

I upgraded my Windows 7 to 10 and it installed and worked without issue but I only use that computer for one very large program (Ham Radio Deluxe) that refuses to cooperate on my Linux machine. Only had limited use but I think Windows 10 is probably the best modern MS offering so far.

Almost finished but I need to get on with other stuff for a bit.

Thread: What did you do today (2015)

You could narrow it down considerably by switching off/disconnecting everything you don't need before you go to bed. If it doesn't trip then try again with half the disconnected items back on. If it trips then try again with only half the items. If no trip then try with half of the other items connected. Repeat as required. 3/4 moves should crack it

In the USA they have local sales tax of between 0 and 11% which compares to our 20% VAT, which must be part of the difference.

Neil

Buying tools in the US maybe cheaper but having an accident or getting sick sure isn't!

Thread: What is it?

They're still available for less than a couple of quid.

I think it's a great idea - go for it.

Thread: how many 'one time' tools do you have?
30/11/2015 18:14:03

My mistake has been buying "sets" of tools when it's only one or two that ever get used and the remainder sit in their cases unused for ever.

In which case why not switch to Linux? I've been using it for many years and have had no problems.

Just got the drawings from Jan for another of his models, the Stirling Eierdop / Stirling Egg Cup. I'll be making a start in a week or so just need to finish some stuff and clear the bench.

Should be interesting. I have built the 10H and 10V and am now building the Score.Out of interest the 10H cost £12.19 at the Model Engineering Exhibition in 1983

According to the ''Worth Now'' website that's £38.49 in today's money.

Thread: Mill to replace drill?
22/11/2015 21:39:58

I found my bench pillar drill was quite often a bother and I was always shuffling it about. But I don't find a floor standing pillar drill actually takes up too much room and can often be fitted in between other stuff with a bit of thought. But, as always, it just depends on the particular workshop.

I agree with John, just hacksaw it and it'll be done in five minutes.
