Thread: Best tool of the day |

During my apprenticeship we were taught to use a steam hammer which was nearly as big as our bungalow, the unofficial trade test was to shut a box of swan vestas without producing a sheet of flame, also to just crack an egg without squashing it, I'm sure others have done this Mick |
Thread: Old brake discs |

Thread: Excellent service |

From Axminster power tools, ordered a NVR switch for my shaper, unfortunately when I fitted it the emergency stop button was not working, it would shut off power ok but when reset it would not restore power, problem was that one of the contacts inside was sticking in its seating thereby cutting off the circuit, contacted them on tuesday last and a replacement was sent straight away arriving on weds, no argument,no quibbling. I have used Axminster for many years and they are an excellent Company so thanks to them Mick |

21/03/2016 15:53:13 |

Apologies I appear to have posted twice Mick |

The shaper is home made with a 7" × 5" table, Iam just fitting the slides to it, there will be a support fitted to outer end of table so should be pretty stiff, the mills are horizontal Adcock/Shipley and a Warco WM14 if the vice was fitted to one I would often need to fit it on the other which can be a pain,I suppose ideally I couuld buy 2 more vices but cost is a consideration Mick |

I have 2 milling m/c's + a 6"shaper, I have a 100 mm wide vice which I use a lot on the mills and have decided to buy another vice but can't decide on another 100mm vice or an 80mm one which would be better to use on the shaper. The 100mm looks a bit ungainly on the shaper but the extra capacity of the larger vice is tempting, what would you do? Mick |
Thread: Bevel gear and pinion |
20/01/2016 19:18:30 |
Building my own shaper I bin trying to find a method for raising the table,I had thought of using a set of mitre gears so it could be raised remotely as space is limited to get my digits in, this looks like a possible solution and as I never throw anything away I have some duff angle grinders which should give me the bits I need Nice one Rik Mick |
Thread: macc metals |

Thread: digital calipers cheap variety |
16/01/2016 20:22:43 |
I'm happy that those that use these are in the main pleased with them, personally I only use the thimble type micrometers, 1"and a set that measures 1"-6" never liked the operation of digital types couldn't get the same reading twice just seemed inacccurate to me perhaps my technique wasn't very good Mick |
