Thread: Auction Model Engineers Workshop |

. I remember thinking when my ex's father died it was not just the loss of the man it was the loss of all the knowledge he had. He had started his business in the 50's when the country was still recovering from WW2 - Certain things were just not available to buy even if you had the money.! This meant a lot of equipment had to be mended, adapted or made from scratch. He was a hard 'mans-man' who became very successful through hard work and determination. Possessed a sense of humor like a naughty schoolboy with a catapult in his pocket. But he was also so generous it could be embarrassing. I am no longer with his daughter but I still miss that man.! He was also a very good educator of the youth. Spending lots of time explaining and giving free advice (via the use of colouful language and stories) There was always something interesting in the yard, be it a job on his full size traction engine or the simple rebuild of his lawn mower engine. - That yard was a magnet for like minded people both young and old and for many a great center of education, fun and humor. The world is running out of such places and characters and IMHO is becoming much a poorer place for it.! And yes, all his gear ended up in auction.

. B&Q have these in stores ATM on offer for £85 (Warrington branch had dozens) I snaffeled one. Maybe not what you are looking for as a tad to big for a bench top and certainly none to quiet. Edit :- In the same branch they were selling identical in every way (apart from different wheels) yellow ones badged as JCB for £149 Nick Edited By Nick_G on 23/06/2014 14:01:33 |

Nick, Definitely more suitable for your needs than that lovely Boxford, which you could donate to me. Gary
You may have a valid point there..! ...................... The truth be known I don't know how to use either properly.

CAN i BE THE FIRST TO OFFER YOU SCRAP VAUE FOR IT...
That would be an equivalent price to a medium sized bag of Jelly babies then.! ............... Sounds fair. It's actually not mine. (but it could be if I asked for it) It belongs to a friend of mine who owns an engineering company. He asked me would I look at an electrical problem on one of his mills and I noticed it when I was there. He says 20+ years ago somebody gave it to him (he cannot remember who) and it's on in his workshop floor ever since.

. Or should I ask what 'was' it.? I know it's a Myford. I ain't THAT stupid.! (besides it says Myford on it. Is it in need of some TLC or a visit from the scrap man. The rest of the parts/motor are not in the photo but do exist.

Thread: Bantam Finishing Problem. |
15/06/2014 22:09:00 |
. Hi Alan, I have started suffering exactly the same problem as yourself recently. Likewise I have tried different steels, speeds, feed rates and 'known good' tools. I am beginning to convince myself it's the headstock bearings as I am running out of other things it could possibly be. Frustrating ain't it.?

Thread: WD40 alternative - any good? |
13/06/2014 19:29:11 |
. It was originally designed / marketed as a water displacer. Hence the WD designation. Over the years is has evolved with much enthusiasm from their marketing department (for obvious reasons) into a fix-all magic product which was not what it was initially conceived as.

Whats wd40 good for anyway ?
The only thing I have ever found it any good for is as a solvent for cleaning away old oil and grease. - Which is nothing that parafin at a fraction of the cost would also do equally well.

Thread: Headstock Oil - Auto transmission fluid.? |
08/06/2014 22:08:24 |
. I have read that automatic transmission fluid is a good substitute for headstock oil. Is this true or an internet myth.? (I ask because I have been given a few gallons of it)

. I have a Boxford lathe fitted with a D1-3 headstock chuck mount. Just discovered that 3 Allen headed screw in the adaptor are not tight.! What are they and what do they do.? Just thought I would ask if they are meant to be tight or are part of some adjusting system before I start behaving like a mad octopus tightening them all up.

Thread: 38mm spindle bore? |
02/06/2014 18:59:43 |
. The spindle bore may be 38mm, but the bore of the chuck may be less and so limiting what size bar can pass.
