Found this yesterday at a car boot for £1, I cannot belive how ell made it is.

Some cog 1.jpgsort of differential for something. Largest gear is 56mm diameter.

Turns like silk with just one tiny rough spot.

Is it for anything in particular?

Thread: Files
22/02/2017 08:32:11

Hi All,

We sell quite a few files and are often surprised by the prices realised.

The smaller needle file types that do well are Vallorbe, Grobet, Stubs & Nicholson along with EA Berg.

Larger makes by the same makers also do well plus Firth, also a Portuguese firm whose name escapes me and of course Auriou which make ludicrous amounts.

We clean them in our ultrasonic bath then a brass wheel.

Liberon Machine Wax for larger items, BRIWAX clear wax for most tools, left on not buffed if for storage or lightly buffed for soft sheen. For more agricultural stuff, (hammers, axes, drawknives etc) we phosphate with KURUST after degreasing, wipe off quickly then wax when dry. Gives a nice satin blue black finish which is very durable.

Camellia oil for planes and tools in constant use particularly soles of planes.

We constantly get nice remarks from our customers on how nice the tools look when they get them.

Do NOT store in leather rolls, worst possible stuff for rust.

Inside storage cabinets, drawers etc the best stuff is the small stick on Vapour Phase inhibitor packs from Shield Technology but VERY expensive ( I think it is dearer than plutonium by the kilo!). Our way round this which works very well is to use sardine paste bottles with holes in the lids and fill with old fashioned moth balls.

Our garage workshop is very prone to rust having an open up and over door and we take a lot of care with rust proofing when our stuff is cleaned as nothing is more demoralisingthan having to do it agaain!

Hi All,

Rummaging in the crates of stuff from the auction I found this lovely thing like brand new but it does not show on the MItutoyo site.

114 mit 1.jpg

Can anyone please tell me its use, must be for something special?

Number is 114-202 reads 0.093" to 1" by tenths

Only another 6 crates to go through...laugh

Second small press in a week, really strange as you often don't see them for years. Chuck is really nice with good springs, not sure ifit is home made, no makers marks anywhere.

Martin

Oil canDepth mic

Nice oiler, we get quite a lot of Valvespout cans but usually the finish is very poor. Did have 3 brand new conical ones recently which are more common, all went to the USA. Sometimes one finds the top spouts on other cans as they are so good but of no value then.

HiAll,

Just wondering if I have made an error in describing this tooling? Is it a 5C fitting please. if not I will have to cancel the listing. There was a note with it saying 5C but someone has queried it. indecision3step5c 3.jpg

Thread: Alexander 2CG Tool Grinder Questions
02/02/2017 17:31:38

Any thoughts on what the green painted bit is for? The collets fit it and the dovetail slide on the bottom 'looks' to be the same as thebusiness end on the machine.

Might be a converted tailstock from something possibly?

Just waiting for the forecast storms to come through here in Dorset, starting to blow a bit now and cannot take any more pics for listing the pile of stuff I have to get through! I cannot believe how a person can buy so much stuff and never take it out of the boxes or use it, very weird!

Cheers, Martin

Hi All,

One lot I just got is this tool grinder in working order but with the motor mounted over the top of the machine for some reason. The original motor mounting plate is sill there and the spigot.

alex 1.jpg

alex 5.jpg

there was only the single collet in the machine but was just rummaging in another lot (80 Lot numbers away!) and found these and another user made part with a dovetail that matches and the same collet size.

alex 9.jpg

alex 10.jpg

The collets are metric and imperial.

This seems to be a clone of another machine, is it very inferior or of some quality please? Seems to run quite well and is not noisy. Never had one of these before and probably not of much use to me so it will probably have to go. The question of whether it is worth restoring refinishing etc rears its head?

A machine like the ARC 'spaceship' would be of more use to me.....

Cheers,

Martin

Thread: Warco WM18
01/02/2017 13:47:30

+1 for the WM18, I have fitted the axis power feed and have the parts for the head lift a la Ian Parkin but not got roundtuit yet!

Had a problem (self inflicted) with the power board on the X axis, sorted beautifully by John Rudd.

Really enjoy using it and just starting to do more complex (for me!) jobs with some confidence.

Regards, Martin
