Thread: photoshopping

Trying to help out the OP here but will need images larger than 9kb...

As with many things PShop is a difficult program to dabble in without basic image knowledge re resolution perspective etc.

Will do my best...

Jon,

I did not know Skarsten scrapers were no more, possibly this explains why nice ones with spare blades do so well on EBay, we sell quite a few in a year, putting a few togerther at a time to make shipping reasonable.

Hi All,

Todays car boot haul included this unusual screwdriver tool by SKARSTEN, the scraper people:

Push the collar forward and it locks in place to use as an awl then press button to return to screwdriver mode!

Thread: Todays Boot Find Goodies!
22/03/2017 09:51:16

Hi Michael,

The correspondent whose remarks I quoted was clearly partially in error regarding the collets. Seems only to have muddied the waters slightly.

The unit was sold to a very high quality professional watchmaker. Wisely, he contacted me after paying for but before shipping to clarify the collet size and kindly sent me a 6mm collet which was way too large.

This has at least avoided the anxiety of sending a cast iron item through the post not once but twice!

I have since refunded him and continue to try and find out exactly what this machine takes in order to describe it more accurately when I list it for sale next time. He too has some 4.5mm collets with a female thread for the drawbar which according to my measurements will also be too large

It is difficult for me to measure this small opening accurately but have done my best.

Any help on this would be really welcome!

Regards,

Martin.

Hi All,

Having established that this is a reversible tapping machine I am still struggling to define the exact collets that will fit. Standard 6mm watchmakers collets are way too large. Here are some close up pics with dimensions if anyone can shged any light please:

I have never seen any this small?

Thread: B&S No:2 Surface Grinder Overhaul Questions
16/03/2017 18:01:56

Tried responding to the ad but no reply?

Looks like no one able tohelp on this grinder query?

Martin

15/03/2017 18:45:09

Hi All,

Currently helping a pal out with his B&S surface grinder in exchange for being able to use it.

Have persuaded him to get the manual from lathes.co.uk which should be a great help.

Machine seems to work fairly well but some wwear apparent in the mechanism that regulates the y axis feed, does no always engage properly.

Also the main bed seems to bet quite stiff occasionally, I have had the bed off and thoroughjly cleaned and oiled all surfaces so this is a bit odd, any thoughts please?

The main oiling point at the front seems to empty very quickly and the inside cupboard gets very oily, could some of the oileways be blocked up causing friction?

Is the postion in which the main bed is relocated after removal critical? Have tried it starting on the rack and feeding in and also by placing down in mid position, no real difference?

Looks like being a fun project and good learning experience.

I am also unable to find a new diamond dresser for the wheels, the old one is ruined..

Cheers, Martin

Thread: GripTru Chuck Pin stuck!
09/03/2017 16:26:07

All sorted! I carefully centred the hole with the pin using a conical centre in the top of the hole then heart in mouth plunged a 2.5mm solid carbide slot mill gently down and down. Finally the remaining little stub started spinning and out it came! Made a new pin and job done.

Martin

08/03/2017 14:17:44

Hi All,

Got 3 Griptru chucks and just started to dismantle the first smallest one which is basically quite good but one or two dings and filthy inside.

All went OK until I tried to remove the last of the 3 chuck key gears. The small retaining pin has sheared off at the screwdriver slot, (not me, already done!) and despite gentle heat, WD40 and tapping etc will not budge! Cannot remove the scroll for cleaning until this is out.

Any thoughts please?

Thread: EBay Rant!
08/03/2017 14:13:16

Putting things in perspective EBay has given us a nice but modest living now for about 6 years so one has to take the rough with the smooth. My wife and I enjoy the 'buying' side of things and it is something we do together now that I am retired from the Film Industry.

I really enjoy bringing old woodwork tools back from the dead.

Cheers,

Hi All,

Its been a while since we had any real problems with EBay considering the amount of stuff we list. Generally we find that any problems are dealt with pretty well, particuarly issues with unwarranted feedback etc.

However a slightly out of the ordinary issue is perhaps worth mentioning for the benefit ot others.

Brand new MIG Welder & Accs (but sold as used) sold to a buyer. £70 odd + plus postage. Duly sent..

After 2 weeks buyer wants to return it saying it does not work. Some language problems as he is Italian.

Agree to the return and will refund in full on basis of safe arrival in good cosmetic order.

Parcel arrives back by Parcelforce with significant damage to torch, wire reels and the visor. (incidentally machine works perfectly when wire put in correct groove and tension set correctly!)

Notify EB, PayPal and buyer of damage and post pics of damage to all.

Explain to buyer that only he as the shipper can initiate claim against Parcelforce for compensation.

Case opened by buyer.

I respond with all info and talk to both EB & PP explaining that buyer should claim from Parcelforce and that I will make good any deficit against written proof of his compensation.

EB say they will take all this into consideration.

Yesterday they refund him in full and say to me that there is no proof of item condition etc! Despite all photos including buyers taken before shipping!

Just now initiated the appeal procedure which can take a while, I suspect I am banging my head against a brick wall.

It is ironic that it is me that has provided the buyer withh all the evidence he needs for a successful claim against Parcelforce so a double hit for him.

Worth bearing in mind perhaps.....

Ah well........!

Cheers,

Martin

Hi all,

It is indeed a tapping machine as I have just received this from a chap who seems to know his onions:

It can work as a drill but is a tapping machine which is why it has the two v belt pulleys , and has three pulleys on the back arm , and the double pulley diameter matches the distance between the hight of the two v pulleys , so the drive comes up from the motor to the over the top of one the double pulleys round the front , then back round the other double pulley and back round the front , now driving it in the opposite direction and the back down to the motor over the single pulley , so pushing down on the lever drives the tap in and lifting it the reverses and unthreads it , how much pressure you put on the lever then determine how much the various cone clutches 'bite ' and you can hear this and so is very good when using very fine taps , as it keeps everything in line and working gently , especially in sticky brass . It uses P6 collets but the P5 collets in Favorite jewelling sets will fit too . They are rare and not many people know how good they are as Bergeron M 0.6 taps are now £45 and mine has lasted 15 years with this tool !

Now gone to a new home!

Cheers, Martin

Thread: Milling - What am I doing wrong
03/03/2017 17:51:09

Look up 'climb milling' that is whats wrong I am pretty sure.

The bottom cut is correct but the top one you must go the other direction to avoid climb.

You must always feed against the rotation of the cutter, same as a woodworking router.

Learnt this the hard way myself!

Hi All.

Finally got around to sorting out the little drill press. It was not too bad just very gummed up with old grease and dirt. Stripped it down and chucked it all in the ultrasonic bath for a while and it came up well. Left the original finish alone. Sadly no collets for it but we will see how it goes.

I sell a fair bit on ebay and wondered why i never got any feedback on stuff i sold via 'global shipping programme' I wonder, now, if its the shipping cost the buyer has to pay. Never gave it a thought till this forum.

We never touch the Global Shipping at all, typical EB rip off! We've only had 7 postage complaints in nearly 15,000 listings!
