Hi All, Just got back from buying a lot of workshop kit and this unusual item was in one of the boxes. I have no idea what it is? Possibly some sort of level??? Seems to have some sort of mirror inside and appears to be very sensitive to movement. Any thoughts will be most welcome please. Regards, Martin |

Hi All, Finally finished the S7 Rebuild, came up OK in the end but a LOT of work! I learnt an awful lot during this process and really enjoyed doing it except for the stripping and cleaning of the castings! Hopefully it will now find a new home! Cheers, Martin |
Thread: Want to put a brass union in a Stainless Steel? tube |
05/07/2018 08:55:08 |
Hi All, My next door neighbour has a very nice Triumph TR3A which at the moment has the front off for some work on the radiator and a general clean up of the now accessable areas. He has a manually switched Kenlowe fan for extra cooling but wants to take this opportunity to fit a union into the stainless cooling down pipe to take a thermostat for the Kenlowe. This part is available withe the union already done for £20 or so but we wonder if it is OK to silver solder or JB weld a suitable brass union into the existing pipe? Seems an easy job? maybe not? Cheers, Martin |
Thread: Super 7 Power Cross Slide Trick! |
21/06/2018 13:29:13 |
Hi All, Finally the time came to replace the refurbished power cross slide on my restoration job. Read all the notes etc saying how tricky this can be and sure enough was not straight forward. When we finally got it engaged the cross slide jammed after a few turns. Lot of head scratching later it was because of the two piece gib strips (very loose for installation). The one nearset the front was hanging up on the apron casting. The lightbulb moment was to completly remove the cross feed screw bracket and screw. This allows instant location of the power drive keyway, then just slide the cross slide casting on from the rear and reattach. 30 seconds top! You live and learn! Martin |

Hi Nige, Have a look at 'Toms Techniques' Youtube channel. He gives a great step by step series on making a really nice knurling tool of super design. Best one I have seen! On my list to make fairly soon when I get time ....... Hmmmm! Lots of other great stuff for the beginner also. I have watched them several time over. Regards, Martin |

Swarf, did not get the microscope, apparently they dropped it and it smashed to smithrereens.... Martin |
13/06/2018 17:27:06 |
Many thanks guys, it had me beaten! I remember doing hardness measurements in one of my Uni sandwich course sections, measuring a small pyramid dent in material that had had a load pressed on a small diamond shaped ram. Would you say it is totally obsolete or perhaps of some use/value? Swarf, it came with a bunch of other non related stuff, kit that is more in my usual line, some nice woodworking tools, panel beaters tools, set of ER32 collets and chucks, small ADEPT lathe etc The clearance guys round here always put stuff aside for me and give me first dibs which is really useful as I never know what they are going to turn up with. Sometimes it is like Xmas every day! Basically anything they do not have a clue about they save and drop round for me to have a look at. I turn away a lot of rubbish, but sometimes I buy some crap anyway just so they keep coming round. Would not want them to stop! Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Todays delivery from my friendly local house clearance guy included this nice cased item. Something to do with a Vickers microscope, I would appreciate any info on how to describe this thing please. Cheers, Martin |

Thread: STUART Twin Cylinder Engine Problem? |
23/05/2018 17:51:16 |

Hi all, Well today I spent some time cleaning the unit up and then improvised a crank handle and turned it over by hand for about 10mins which made things a lot smoother and easier. I then oiled everything in sight and found that my compressor air fitting matched the intake thread perfectly. So taking that as a sign from above I let some air in very gently via the gate valve and bugger me if it didn't start to turn over very slowly and smoothly indeed! Ran it that way for about 5 mins then let some more air in and it speeded up very nicely. Only did this for about 30 secs as I was worried about it getting enough oil. You certainly would not want to get anything caught up in it when running as it seems very powerful indeed. I have no idea how the displacement lubricator should be set or how it works, ditto for the reversing gear. I just want to get this in good running order and then get it off to a new home! Cheers, Martin |
19/05/2018 17:40:17 |
Hi Jason, So this being loose will not have affected the timing? Am I correct in thinking that his is a Stuart No:3? Will it run on air from my Axminster small compressor, about 90psi? Cheers, Martin |
19/05/2018 14:46:40 |
Hi All, Just had a clearance guy I know drop this round to me, asking was it any good to me! Covered in flffy oikly rubbish as shown at one end. Quite hard to turn butall seem OK except there was this really loose bolt on the front eccentric which I think is something to do with the reversing gear. I want to try and get this running on air to see how it goes before selling it and of course give it a bit of a tidy up which I have started on already. I do not want to do any damage without first sorting out this loose bolt problem, any help would be most welcome, it seems like a nice find and quite a big lump! Cheers, Martin |
Thread: Picador Type Drill Grinding Jig Modifications |
08/05/2018 08:11:21 |
Hi All, These jigs are obviously very popular, we have had quite a few over the years including the various clones of the Picador and they always sell and do quite well considering they cost very little at car boots. The true Picador ones do significantly better than the others. Other Picador tools like drill bit stands are a bit rarer and also wanted so I assume that there is a Picador collector base out there in the ether! They are often missing the table clamp part and these sell well on there own if we can find them. Cheers, Martin |
