Jason has it right. It is common on many STANLEY planes and others. i need some length to remake knackered adjuster columns on some spokeshave adjusters etc.

i will try a hexagon die from Tracy tools then try to power thread some at low rpm in back gear. Another first for me!

It has been a long hard road to finally complete these sets of cutters

Many thanks to Andrew Johnston for doing a sterling horizontal milling job on the grooves and bevel.

The real problem was in finding a water jet cutter to take on the job; tried several companies and they all either did not want the job or said it could not be done as the small parts would get lost in the tank.

Other companies wanted to charge between £250 and £1000 plus VAT to do them!

Finally found a guy who said he would fit them in between other work as time was not an issue and he wanted a bit of cash. 5 MONTHS later I called to be told he was going out of business and I was lucky to get my material back!

I was playing on the computer at MIDNIGHT on Friday and came across a company near Portsmouth, used their online enquiry form to outline the project and got a reply 8 minutes later saying "no problem I'll do them while you wait"

Went over there on Monday with full Covid observance and the guy did them for me at a VERY reasonable price; the set up took a a bit of messing about to avoid damaging the bevel end but got round that by reversing the work. He did a complete cut whereas all the other outfits said it had to be done with tabs, meaning more work for me.

Turned out like this after hardening:

I will post a video of then being cut later.

The guy is happy to do more and will charge a bit less for next batch as he now has the file on his system; also happy to help with some other projects that I have in mind.

Hi all,

I am getting on OK with my new AC/DC tig machine from RTech but really only on mild steel angle and flat bar in the 3-5mm thickness. Practice does seem to be the key here!

I have successfully built up a chipped corner of a Cast Iron vice with SiBronze brazing and repaired a small watchmakers lathe in a similar fashion. Neither looked that pretty but they came out OK after machining. Both items showed porosity which I suspect was from the carbon in the cast iron and the fact that it was difficult to get the joint REALLY clean.

Also with SiF one is not supposed to melt the cast only the rod; I found this really difficult when striking the arc as can be seen at the RHS of the joint.

Very difficult to guess the current also, this was at 85A with 2.4 tungsten and 1.6mm rod. Perhaps should have been less with such a small part?

Quite surprised at how quickly the Argon goes down even with only a 5sec post flow. Another expense to be costed in at £50 a pop from Hobbyweld!

I am looking into the courses offered by The Machine Shop in Leicester as they have a tie up with RTech and buyers of RTech kit may be eligible for a 4hr free course. Long way for me but maybe tie it in with another course and make a day of it; post COVID of course.

The plane cutters weld up OK but will need to switch to a 1.6mm tungsten and smaller cup I think. Again here I could do with some help with the best current to set on these very small parts, almost just a tack weld?

Hi All,

Here are the next operations completed. Original shown for comparison.

Rounded over the upper end of the shank; cut the groove for the adjusting screw and tapped the bottom M4 for those cutters that have the removeable double bevelled cutter. Other will just have a silver soldered or tig'd cutter to the ends

The split collet was a great success and worked well.

This job is very repetitive and gets a bit boring so I do a few at a time then something else.

I am not sure how to best get the 2 1/2 degree bevel at the bottom, will probably put the part in a vee block and make an angled fence on the disc sander. Just hop the screw will still line up OK

Got to make a split collet today to hold the stock in the 3 jaw for the end operations.

Hi all,

Just thought I would post this as a bit of fun.

There will be a small prize of some small items of workshop tooling to the first person to correctly guess EXACTLY what I am making. The answer must be very specific.

I have started with some 3" lengths of 3/8" square mild steel and milled the corners off with a 45 degree dovetail cutter as below:

I am making approximately 50 of these items and there will be the same amount in 5/16" square material. Obviously I am doing all the items in batches to keep the machine setups to a minimum.

If no one gets it with this photo I will post the next operation when I do it.

THIS will NOT be ready for Xmas!!

I hope everyone has a great Xmas despite what is going on and would like to thank all the people on here who have been so helpful to me over the year.

My Creality Ender Pro 3 cost about £200 last Xmas a "toy" for myself to play with and learn the technology.

I ended up making some lathe spiders for my Myford and for a laugh put a set of 3 on EBay for £15.

56 sets later and now doing them in different sizes for other chucks as well as hard to find plane fence replicas which have also sold lots.

The printer has not skipped a beat despite running night and day sometimes, changed out one nozzle and bowden tube is all the maintenance it has had.

Made some casting patterns for a Tom Senior mill part for a friend who has had the parts cast in iron and sold many with no complaints.

Made "Bat Man" tooth paste tube squeezers for the neighbour's kids and all their pals wanted them so a bit of a rod for my own back there but good fun!

BTW,

Edges and corners are hard to do and can waste a lot of material, not got round that one yet, any thoughts welcome!
