Hi All,

Is there some kind of product for aluminium similar to cold blue for steel?

Hi All,

This project has been on the back burner for a while as we have been very busy with other items.

However I finally got around to having a go at TIG welding up the stand frame. This went well for the most part but I had to be careful to do all my tacking at opposite sides of each part to avoid distortion as much as possible.

Most of the welds came out OK but one or two burnt through the tubing and accessed non argon shielded air which caused some dirt etc to get in the weld.pool. Also I have not yet tried the foot pedal so sometimes the job gets too hot.

The other tricky part of the stand was getting the top and bottom sections dead level; this was achieved by only tacking the back section so that the upright could be levered into position with a digital level, then firmly clamped and the front then tacked. This worked out well.

It was also useful to be able to use the main body frame as a means of setting the main fulcrums inline. The machine now operates both vertically and horizontally quite accurately to my surprise! Some balance issues to sort out as the front end gets the parts added when made. This is it so far:

I am going to cold blue all the steel items and will probably leave the alloy as is unless there is some kind of blacking product for aluminium? Anodising is way too expensive!

Hi All,

the best case of this green stuff used to be in the sliding window channels of early Mini’s, you could grow potatoes in a good example!

Thread: EU Customs Tariif codes for hand tools?
31/01/2022 12:22:11

Hi Gerard,

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

This is going to be a nightmare for a little one man band (+wife) business like ours!

I wonder how evident it is to my eBay buyers exactly how much extra an item is going to cost them by the time they get it? If they do not know this upfront it will come as a nasty surprise!

I have just spent some time making up a list of the codes we most often need, you really have to hunt around for them on the tariff site.

Hi All,

We have had several (4) items returned to sender by Republic of Ireland Customs, all sent to Dublin. All marked Rejected/Failed Electronic Customs.

All items were sent using Royal Mai online click & drop service to generate payment and address and customs forms for later drop off at our local post office to get the proof of posting slips.

The only thing I can think of is that there is now a field for customs code which is now mandatory but was not when the items were posted.

Trying to find the specific code for hand tool items is a nightmare as the codes seem to have been generated by someone who never held a tool in their lives!

I have been unable to find codes for measuring equipment, micrometers and such; hand planes and spokeshaves and have resorted to the nearest match I can find and will hope the items get through this time (at my expense).

Does anyone know if there is a resource that deals with these specific types of hand tools?

Thread: How to keep Paint Fresh?

Chas,

Great explanation, thanks!

Will white spirit be suitable? Can one buy methyl whatever?

Hi All,

Hardly a Workshop Technique I know!

I buy 1 litre tins of oil based gloss for various jobs and would like to know if there is a trick to keeping the paint fresh once opened.

Even just opened once and a small amount used, reseal the lid tightly and turn upside down to swish the paint against the inside. As soon as I open it some time after there is a skin on the top. There is hardly any air in the tin, How come?

Is there a way around this?

Thread: Unusual Leather Rolling Machine
25/01/2022 20:24:18

We both work on the general basis of “if we like it, perhaps someone else will too”

We really enjoy finding nice odd items and bringing them back to life, the fact that they often make a it of profit helps too!

often things like this just end up at the scrapyard which I think is a great shame.

Now listed so we will wait and see….

Hi All,

Here are some pics of the restored machine, now ready to go.

Quite enjoyable to do but the parts were very heavy.

Many thanks guys for clarifying all this.

As you know eBay is our small business and there is nothing worse than mis-describing items listed.

We try hard to be accurate in our listings and this has been a great help.

23/01/2022 19:30:52

Jason, I do not have the second cylinder and second support bracket so I am OK with just the one of each.

Again, are there supposed to be two of the small castings to the right of the beam? I only have the one.

I will list the extra castings along with the main lot.

23/01/2022 17:38:33

Hi All,

i have sorted out the mis-description with the Auction House who were very helpful.

I have got a photo of what SHOULD be a FULL set of Sanderson castings and have marked the ones I do and do not have. There do however appear to be two cylinder casting and two of the support arm castings in the photo of which I only have one each? The Blackgates pic shows only one of each I think?

Y for what I have and X for what is missing.

I also appear to have 6 "extra" bronze or GM castings as shown here?

Any help most welcome to get to the bottom of this so I can list them with confidence and accuracy.

The auction house has agreed the mis description, just waiting to see how we resolve it.

20/01/2022 19:01:19

Thanks very much guys for the help.

will go through the items carefully tomorrow to see EXACTLY what I have before listing them again.

I will also have a chat with the auction house about their description which was why I was bidding in the first place.

however it does go to show that a little knowledge (on my part) can be dangerous! 😗

Hi All,

I do not wish to mislead anyone with my latest listing which is SUPPOSEDLY for a set of STUART Beam Engine castings minus the flywheel as in the auction description where I bought them in with other stuff.

Pretty sure they ARE NOT Stuart so would love some help identifying them please.

I have pulled the listing until clarified.
