HI Tom, I think redesigning it so it's all flat plates that can be held together with adhesive would be one way to go. That way you only need 2D cutting. Neil |

Actually cut some metal today! 15 minutes to the nearest minute to cut 2 3/4" round EN1A on my bandsaw, may be a useful yardstick for others. Turns to a lovely finish with my tangential tool, it will be a wheel for my driving trolley.. Neil |

The Duratool one has an adjustable physical level built in (more accurate than the electronic level) for accurate zero setting and an absolute/relative function. One application I haven't seen mentioned is sticking one to a chuck jaw for non-critical dividing, such as drilling cylinder cover studs. Neil Edited By Neil Wyatt on 19/03/2014 16:06:41 |

Billy, last night I spent 20 minutes looking for a simple power connector socket on the CPC website without success. i just couldn't find the right keyword to find the section in the online catalogue. With a paper catalogue I reckon I would have found it in thirty seconds? When the web allows you to 'flick through' a thick publication or a huge pile of 'virtual magazines' to find the half-remembered picture or title you seek and skip back to it in seconds, then it will become a bit more useful. I'm no luddite, I have plenty of books and documents in pdf form, but the only disadvantages of paper are the space and weight and that ctting and pasting is a touch messier!
Danny, They are still draft, but email me [email protected] and I'll send you a copy. Neil |

I don't know what to believe. My wife and I have both been told to reduce our cholesterol, and then today there's a study of 600,000 people that finds no link between dietary cholesterol and heart disease. Neil

Having grown up on plastic models, I'm all for well-done weathering. At least we can console ourselves that we don't suffer 'brass belaying pin' syndrome as afflicts parts of the ship modelling world. > wooden cannons are best suited to Practical Woodworking and quite where a set of door chimes fall is anyone's guess! Neither of these would have been thought out of place in ME for the first 70 years of its history. Neil |

My numbers were stamped. i could have done better now with a simple stamp guide I have made. If I was re-doing that job, I would use photo etching. Note, I had to mark a flat piece of brass, bend it to size, then measure the elongation of the scale and use that to calculate sizes for the final one in order to get an accurate result. Neil |

Thread: Mini lathe shaft/spindle Bearings |

Hi Brian, I replaced the motor with a layshaft and a pulley turned on my mill, then added a single phase Hoover fractional motor. Once I'd got pulleys for six speed made, plus another six with back gear I found I could do everything I could before, but had more power. Sadly, I'm an improvement freak and wanted real slow speeds back, so i fitted a 0.4kW 3-ohase motor and a Jaguar Cub inverter, still with the layshaft, but now with a poly-v belt. Neil |

HI Nigel, Please don't judge the quality of the publication under my editorship until I've had a fair chance to influence it and you've read a few issues that I've edited. MEW isn't Rolling Stone. To get content written on demand like you want demands staff writers, and for a special interest publication it is very unlikely that the budget would ever stretch that far anymore (ME did have staff writers back in the 50s). Yes - Martin Evans was paid to build locos and then write about it, and the magazine had it's own workshop. They had a professional photographer at one time who would go and photograph peoples' models. Sadly those days are gone. Commissioning articles is very difficult as you are obliged to pay for what you get, even if you can't use it. As Jason says I have tried to be in contact with as many established authors as possible. To all enquirers (new and old) I have been passing on my understanding of the sort of content subscribers want to see. I would encourage any and all authors to let me know what they are thinking of writing about before committing to a lot of work. I also intend to make available a list of subjects in which interest has been expressed and allow authors to 'reserve' a subject. Not a commission as such, but hopefully a way of making sure the content reaches new areas. In many ways MEW is a glorified club newsletter, after all it sprang from ME and that was, in effect, the SMEE newsletter when Percival Marshall set it up. This is not a bad thing - both magazines are written by and read by hobby engineers, not professional journalists. Neil |

The brushed motors are not noisy enough to cause any irritation. I lost the circuit board on mine to a very long ribbon of swarf that reached in along the lead screw So now I have a VFD Neil |

I like hearing about Clive's bees, but when is he going to offer forum members some free honey? I've only seen bumble bees so far this year, big fat queen bees. The birds are singing - chiffchaff and greenfinch today, and I saw a pair of long-tailed tits when walking the dog earlier. Neil |

In MEW we do our best to run series concurrently, there is an index published every twelve issues and the next issue will have the index for issues 201 to 212 in it. All three of the articles you mention have been published 'end to end'. Traditionally ME published articles every other issue for many years. David Clark phased this out, but Diane is reintroducing it. The argument is that it allows greater variety of content in a fortnightly magazine (and lets long series writers have a chance to keep up!) There are various indexes for each magazine available on line or on CD, with different pros and cons, that you might use. Also, if you get really stuck either ask on here or if you get really stuck email me at [email protected] (within reason!) Neil |

I ask as we have space for two or three more free classified in issue 215. The reader ads get a very good response rate, so I'd encourage anyone who has something to sell to email me with their classified ads before next weekend. Please follow the format in the magazine. Many thanks Neil |

Yes, the first thing is very nice and looks like the too grinding jig I told someone I've never seen an example of. The second is a micrometer saddle stop . The 'big gear cutters' could be side and face cutters. Do you have a deal with the workshop-elves to bring you their gleanings? Neil |
