There is clearly much more to the instrument than being some sort of clamp ! … Let’s have some photos of the other details. MichaelG. . Edit: __ I suspect it may be a Galvanometer Edited By Michael Gilligan on 29/12/2021 10:51:06 Suspended mirror galvanometer would make sense. |

Thread: A Merry Christmas to All |
24/12/2021 21:28:32 |
This has been another difficult year and I know many of us will not be able to celebrate as we would like, and some will be facing Christmas without people they had hoped to spend it with. Not withstanding ongoing uncertainties, this is a time for optimism, hope, friends and family, while remembering those less fortunate than ourselves. May I wish all readers of the magazines and members of the forum and their families a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas, and the very best for the future. I originally produced the picture below for Christmas 2021, I think bright lights shining in the dark is fitting for this year as well. Neil Editor, MEW

Perhaps Vic or Bernard might consider a write up for MEW, and/or sharing a file people can send off for laser cutting? Neil |
Thread: The great workshop bake-off (paint that is) |
24/12/2021 21:08:43 |
This is curious. Barbeque paint is ideal for blacking the inside of telescopes as it doesn't reflect infra-red light, unlike ordinary matt black paint. I have sprayed the inside of a 12" diameter tube with it, but I'm not sure if it was Rustoleum or not (a good chance it was). I recall that a coat was dry very quickly, although taking a bit longer in the middle of the tube, but under an hour.
I once had problems with a can of paint that wouldn't set after weeks; the manufacturers were at a loss to say what the issue was.

Thread: 43 TPI |

Thanks everyone for the replies. I managed to get the thread calculator working and managed to get it within 1/10th of a tooth over 1" which is more than enough as I'm only machining about 3/8th" of thread. In answer to the question what's it for, I'm machining the body threads on an old Devilbiss airbrush and although the bore is about 11mm, the thread is the same as a 5BA machine screw. I suspect they may have used 5BA Coventry die head chasers as a cutting tool. It's not 44tpi and it's not 42tpi. The only thread I can find inbetween is 5BA which is 43tpi. I may braze up a tool from a die head as a cutting tool. The important thing is it's close enough to do the job. It's not just M0.6 is it? |

Excellent David. Thank you. Why can't something like this be an official part of the MEW website ? Paul. I'll put my hand up. I should have given some profile to David's efforts and put a link page on to the website. David, I'll drop you and email soon. Many thanks, Neil |
Thread: Subscription issue and MTM (secureorder) contact |
23/12/2021 16:21:59 |
Hi Phillip, As Jason says, the easiest solution is a new subscription. If there's a problem, email me and I will try and get it dealt with, but it may not now be possible before the New Year. Neil |

Hi Ian, Could you drop me an email at [email protected], please? In the meantime, I suggest you also contact Pocketmags support, your previous subscription copies should still be available. Ideally, you shouldn't have created a new Pocketmags account. I will seek an update on progress with the archive on Monday. I am not sure what the delay is, but I do know various titles are being process in turn. Neil

Thread: What Did You Do Today 2021 |
17/12/2021 17:06:29 |
Installed a 'Billy Bookcase' in my workshop. A set of reasonably robust shelves for just £25 and exactly the right size for the available bit of wall. Leave a space for the dehumidifier, which can be moved out to allow the Warspite to be unracked. Not much left to do, I want to add drawers to the benches and a couple of sections of plasterboard to tidy the wall/ceiling joint left to do. Do not trust 'instant grab' in a sealant gun to stick plasterboard to plasterboard - you need at least one screw to hold everything while it sets! I now have a date to empty the container and move everything in. I'm starting to get excited! Neil |

Thread: Colour imaging in very low light |

Curious. Many standard CMOS sensors now have a quantum efficiency of 90%. I'm not entirely sure why there would be a need to chip away at that final 10%. Perhaps the 'avalanche' amplification ends up being lower noise than conventional amplification? Even a pretty old DSLR is quite good at taking photos when barely anything is visible... I think this was with a Canon 10D. The circle is around andromeda. Neil

Thread: Android GO |
13/12/2021 15:34:18 |
I'd love to recommend Samsung, except that the built-in software is a pain. It keeps trying to do jobs such as password retention and voice recognition with its awful 'Bixby Routines'. These are all done better and more conveniently by Android itself or Firefox - in particular passwords which Firefox securely shares across all my devices. Samsung 'stole' the care of some of my passwords causing all sorts of pain when I change one. Neil |
Thread: Digital Caliper - again, sorry |

The biggest difference in quality if the 'feel'.
It's nice having pairs of M&W and Mitutoyo calipers just because they are so nice to use. Confession... for the last year or so I've just had an old unbranded vernier calipers from Halfords to hand. It's been useful mire than once and the battery hasn't gone flat Neil |

Its a funny world when someone trying to get things right is called a pedant. Just remember - if you don't care about words, you might promote vacillation when you meant vaccination. But perhaps someone in high places has beaten you to it. cheers, Tim Another poster not realising that Mark was humorously correcting himself? Neil |
