Thread: Glasses -- sometimes called headlamps
01/03/2022 18:42:13

Asda, two pairs for £120, very nice frames (one of mine is Racing Green) and the price includes ultra light lenses, anti-scratch, UV and anti-reflection coatings. Other pair I got are sunglasses with a heavy tint as well.

Other places manage to start at a similar place then by costing in the extras get up around £300.

Try and track down Lathe and Shaping Machine Tools by 'Duplex', Tee Publishing, 1949, republished 1992, ISBN 1 85761 007 5.

Many examples, including what is essentially the tool in Joe's photos.

Thread: Windows 10 "upgrade" to Windows 11 Anyone tried it?
01/03/2022 11:27:05

You can bypass the TPM check by changing something in the registry, allowing older machines to run it.

MS haven't made a lot of noise about this, but apparently it isn't a big deal and the fix is documented on their website.

support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/ways-to-install-windows-11-e0edbbfb-cfc5-4011-868b-2ce77ac7c70e

The 'risk' is that this leaves you with a W10 level of security on your W11 machine.

Thread: How can I cut a 0.75mm radius on a piece of soft rubber sheeting?
24/02/2022 16:54:01

Make a two-part punch from silver steel and patience?

Or two shaped blocks and cutting the protruding rubber with a scalpel will be easy with 1mm rubber.

Thread: I want chips
24/02/2022 16:50:56

You could use a cut off wheel in a dremel type tool to grind a groove a couple of mm back from the cutting edge, or perhaps make some form of chip breaker from a bit of bent steel.

Thread: Acceptable run-out on Axminster SX1 milling machine?
24/02/2022 16:49:04

The main problem is that to sell gear that is 100% tested at the factory will easily increase the price several times.

The high precision collets and holders mentioned by Andrew are no doubt selected by such a process.

Because we hobbyists won't play silly prices, we have to accept there's always a chance of getting products that are out of specification, although these days this is the exception not the rule. As demonstrated above, the responsible suppliers will refund or replace without fuss.

I know there are more than a few closet headbangers in here!

I've just put my copy of Saxon's latest album on and the second track is "Age of Steam" about the industrial revolution.

Fans will also know "Princess of the Night" an ode to steam locomotives.

There's also Iron Maiden with "Empire of the Clouds" about the R101, and Motôrhead's "Iron Horse".

Has anyone got any other suggestions? I fancy making a Spotify playlist on this theme.

Thread: Always confused over threads and tapping
22/02/2022 18:03:56

And Microphone stands use 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" BSW, obviously deliberately chosen to be at odds with camera tripods.

I have some internally and externally threaded adaptors - some of them are for cameras ,some for microphones... much potential for confusion!

Thread: Releasing a corroded stud (steel) passing through a casting (aluminium)
22/02/2022 17:58:52

I have to get two sheared off screws out of a wooden guitar neck, in some ways a similar problem!

I was going to turn up a functionally identical tool from silver steel.

In the end I will be using a 6mm plug cutter, then making cross-grained mahogany replacement plugs using the next size up.

All good clean fun.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but for camera tripod 1/4" and 3/8" threads the past standard was BSW and the modern one is UNC, but usually they are made 'loose' enough that either is an easy fit.

hence insurance companies demanding a BS standard 5 lever mortice dead lock in addition to a night latch.

I think it depends where you live.

That's useful, Graham.

I've been using citric acid, and the only downside is the thick sludge on really rusty items. The things I have derusted have finished matt black.

The 'patina' on the gateros one may be iron phosphate, which I tend to think is a 'good thing'.

A keysafe is going to be as secure as a keypad on the door. They are used all over by lots of places and I'm sure you can get insurance approved ones.

It avoids upsetting your mum's routines as well.
