Get rid of the chainsaw rubbish at the top would be my suggestion. Serious question - why?
Edited By JasonB on 08/07/2022 12:08:32 Sorry edited your post rather than quoted but this is my reply as to why Because it would be better placed below the title, which would still have it in the visible part of the page . Keep the title at the top and one liners below. Look at issues before 151 and just move the date below Workshop then the title can sit even higher Edited By JasonB on 08/07/2022 12:15:59 That doesn't explain why it would be better. Neil |

Thread: New-style cover finish |
07/07/2022 11:15:31 |
The decreasing paper quality of MEW has been a bugbear for years and the new publishers want to address this. It may be that a super glossy finish is a step too far, but I've just done a comparison and I can't find a significant difference between the angle a pair of glossy issues slip at to a pair of the old style ones. Also, the glossy finish repels oil etc. better. But do please raise any thoughts in the 'New Cover' thread. They are being read by the publishers. Neil |

Mortons asked me to seek feedback... they are getting it! keep it up. 317.. the 'young lady' on the lady is my partner, and I'm sure she will be delighted to be described as such
My main reaction is... the old MEWs had pictures of people in their workshops, but in the days when resources covered someone going out regularly to photograph them. Hence, a competition in the hopes that readers will be enthused to get a friend to help out and take some really good photos, for covers or inside pages. Neil |

Have a look at the cover to our upcoming issue, No 318, Aug-22 issue. What do you think? What's good? What's bad? I'm redecorating (rebuilding) the bathroom in between working. Tonight I grouted the first two walls, fitted a towel rail to replace a radiator (not plumbed in yet) and fitted a new toilet roll holder! Neil |
Thread: Simple Quiz... Missing Weight |
05/07/2022 23:12:46 |

Neil's original post mentioned kitchen scales. I don't believe that extreme accuracy is required, and I doubt that he will ever need to weigh 63 oz as an example. The principle was simply that it needs to be a balance scale to use the 'any two of three' method. The resulting series of weights will cover any number of ounces up to 64, including 63. Neil |

Interesting ideas. My thought is that you have to drop down from 2lbs in steps. Now, the way to get an accurate 1lb weight is to make three, slightly overweight ones. Keep gradually reducing so that any pairing of two exactly balances the 2lb weight. Like matching surface plates, you now know all three weigh 1lb exactly. Now put one exact 1lb weight and use it to get three 1/2lb weights. Bear in minds that only ONE of the weights needs to be a single piece, the other two can be made up of various odd ends. Keep going down via 8, 4,2 and 1 oz. Just make sure you keep two 1oxz weights at the end. so you can make up 4lbs as 2lbs + 1lb + 8oz + 4oz + 2oz + 1oz + 1oz. Neil |

I have a kitchen scale, an old style pan balance. But I only have the 2lb weight! I have loads of scrap to make weights from, but no access to another weighing device. What's the quickest way to make a set of weights that will weigh anything from 1 ounce to 4lbs?

I have just looked again and the available issues are back to March 2020 followed by three 2010 issues. Hopefully they are working on restoring all the missing ones. Martyn Yes it is being worked on, it means generating LOTS of new issues but the new reader works about ten times faster than the old one and lets you customise and download PDFs at last! Neil |

I'm on the verge of giving up. Despite my subscription showing that it's current, I have not received any issues for a while, cannot see any digital issues. The forum seems to be in most "Myford" threads....time served, dust coated, pipe smoking old scrapers all saying the times at 1910 were perfect. I keep hoping that the magazine it will get better, but realistically it probably won't. best wishes ....hopefuly cheers Bill Hi Bill, you need that new subscriber number. Good article well written apart from one small problem : this ignoramus doesn't know what a Rosebud Grate is! It's like Citizen Kane - if they all knew what Rosebud is, it would spoil the movie/article. Neil
Yes, just tapered holes instead of firebars. |

Make NO MISTAKE gentlemen, Myford Beeston DID NOT make all the items they sold ! Some for the sake of argument were made in the west country ! The castings were supplied, taken to a small workshop in Devon, manufactured and delivered to Beeston whilst at the same time the next batch of castings were collected. They had an identifying W stamped in them ! This is a fact ! Noel. The Myford VMB (mill) and Mystro MK2 (a wood lathe) were made in Taiwan. Neil |
