Thread: Email issues |

My apologies to anyone trying to email me at the moment. Due to the unfathomable vagaries of Microsoft's security protocols I am currently unable to access my email. Morton's IT gurus are working on it.. Emails are not going astray, I just can't see them or even access old ones! Please keep sending letters, photos, articles etc. I will respond as soon as I am able. Thanks for your patience. Neil |
Thread: An elementary electronics question. |

I'd use a current limiting resistor for each individual LED, and power them all using a cheap variable voltage module. Or to make life easy, use strings of four LEDs at ~ 8.8V with a current limiting resistor oif the 12V supply - but calculate the resistor value according to the actual voltage from the supply. If it's fairly accurate or a little high, 15 ohms will probably be near enough for jazz - it’s a prop not a NPL project! Neil |

Neil, do you still want photos of workshops ? Yes please! Neil |
Thread: Photograph Resizer |
03/11/2022 17:19:43 |
Most software will do a basic resize with interpolation. If anyone does feel like spending money, I can recommend Topaz Gigapixel AI which is outstanding. Using this software, there are several articles that have appeared in MEW recently that previously we would have had to reject because the photographs were so tiny, resampling normally them would have introduced awful effects. The denoise and sharpen versions of Topaz are outstanding as well and have rescued other images for the magazine.* Neil

It's time for a reminder! I see loads of potential winners of the Readers' tips competition on the forum. It only takes a quarter of an hour to tyype a short description and take a couple for photos. What are you waiting for folks? Neil
We have £30 in gift vouchers courtesy of engineering suppliers Chester Machine Tools for each month's 'Top Tip'. Email your workshop tips to [email protected] marking them 'Readers Tips', and you could be a winner. Try to keep your tip to no more than 600 words and a picture or drawing. Don’t forget to include your address! Every month I'll choose a selection for publication and the one chosen as Tip of the Month will win £30 in gift vouchers from Chester Machine Tools. Visit www.chesterhobbystore.com to plan how to spend yours! Please note that the prize of Chester Vouchers is only available to UK readers. You can make multiple entries, but we reserve the right not to award repeat prizes to the same person in order to encourage new entrants. All prizes are at the discretion of the Editor.

Thread: Last Night's Astro Image |
27/10/2022 00:49:20 |
I'm on an astrophotography holiday at the moment, although the weather has not been kind at all! I managed to add to my Jupiter collection this evening. RGB + a percentage of an IR as 'luminance'. My ASI 178MM camera and 150PL scope. I tend to more subtle colour these days rather than maxing the contrast, less spectacular but closer to what you would see through a telescope. |

JB Weld is probably the best. They have multiple products so look at their details. The better the surface offers a good key, the better the results. Neil Edited By Neil Wyatt on 21/10/2022 14:00:18 |
Thread: 're-purposing' old screwdrivers |

More seriously... I altered a screwdriver by filing a 5mm hex on the end, as my mini lathe vertical slide has a couple of hard to reach cap screws. Neil |

Last night on Wild Inside on Radio 4, there was a dissection of a stranded harbour porpoise. They sometimes have ear damage and the guy doing the autopsy used a screwdriver to remove the inner ear bones from the skull. Could that count as 're-porpoising a screwdriver'? Neil |
Thread: strange electronic caliper fault |

I don't know if any one else has come across this. I was measuring up a pulley this morning and the readings were not as expected. A quick check showed that the electronic readout was showing exactly half of the actual dimension. i.e. 20 mm showing as 10, 40mm showing as 20 and zero showing as zero. The usual cure for electronic wobblies is to dis-connect the power supply for a while, so I removed the battery. While it was out I thought I might as well dismantle the caliper and clean the scale and sensor PCB. Having done this, it was re-assembled, the battery re-fitted and it is now working normally. However, if I use it in future, I will regard it's readings with a certain amount of suspicion. The caliper is a cheap "Workzone" model from Aldi, which I have had for about 6 years and never had problems with it previously.
Some have a radius function; also some have functions that are not accessible as full complement of buttons isn't fitted. An extended press on a button or a glitch may have sent your caliper into a 'hidden' radius mode. Neil |

Photo frames... why is a photo frame of any given size more expensive than an android tablet? Neil . Because they are not “sponsored” by an operating system MichaelG. . P.S. __ can’t quite reconcile your question with the Ali link that I posted earlier. Because your link doesn't show prices? (that I could find) |

The cylindrical section probably makes manufacturing tolerances a little less demanding - that long thread(!) would allow a lot of variation in the taper position.. Neil |
