Thread: Any caravaners on here |

Hi Sean, Is it an Alko hitch? Just google "alko hitch pads". See also here... http://www.al-ko.co.uk/pages_faqs/friction-pads.html Alko reckon the pads should last about 33k miles and they cost about £30-50. You could change them but another way is to try roughing up their faces and the towball with fine emery paper - that used to stop the squeeks for me. Made by George Wallis of Hull, 1731-1803. It is a 12 bore flintlock which I shall be shooting in a sporting clay completion 1/10/17 so I have just over a week to replace the missing foresight and the parts started arriving today. The plan is to fix on a small brass pip using as much black duct tape as I can possibly hope to justify
Lovely Damascus barrel. (Who needs two barrels at a clay shoot anyway? Jon |

TBH I have imperial machines and had no problems following Harold's plans but you could always ask Harold himself?.... HTH Jon |
Thread: Dovetails in wood |

For through dovetails, can you not cut two sides at once if they're that thin, or perhaps use a scrap backing piece to make up the thickness to the minimum? Usually the problem is getting the capacity to handle thick enough timber. Jon |

To save changing to a saucer wheel on the Quorn you can also produce the gashes with a cut-off wheel in a Dremel. Jon |

Thread: Open Cup Grinder Wheel Recommendations? |
30/08/2017 10:23:54 |
Thank you all for the suggestions and thank you Frances for recommending Midland Abrasives. Harold was very kind to give me the benefit of his experience too and also suggested Midland Abrasives. He also added his ok to the idea of smaller wheels. Frances, I really like the idea of powering the spindle from the lathe - thank you for the tip. Did you support the grinder body in any way or just leave it floating? Many thanks and regards Jon |

Just found these wheels at a good price... Has anyone used Midland Abrasives before? Many thanks Jon

Sorry, I should have mentioned that my tooling is all HSS and so I'd prefer AlOx, or perhaps at a stretch CBN, rather than diamond. Jon |

Hello All, I'm looking for one of each 60-grit open cup and saucer wheels at a reasonable price as well as some advice please. My grinder is a cheap double ended 125mm unit to be used with Harold Hall's advanced rest and so I think could reasonably accommodate either 100 or 125mm wheels. Which size would you recommend and where would you get them from? Any advice gratefully received - Many thanks Jon |

Very nice one Jon. Please let us know how you get on with using it, it looks a very useful piece of kit. Brian Thanks Brian, will do. |

Finished my Harold Hall Advanced grinding rest last night. Just some fettling left to do and then it's on with the accessories. I have a cheap grinder to convert but it also needs some work. So, it'll be a while before I'm sharpening end-mills. Jon |

Heat and oil works but probably more faff. I recently tried Casey Super Blue from these folks... **LINK** Usual caveats - just a satisfied customer. Scrupulously clean and degreased (hot water and washing up liquid), and wearing disposable gloves, followed by a couple of wipes over from the bottle - no real need to dip it IMHO. Followed by rinse in hot water and then dried and oiled. Not the greatest photo but the knurl and dial indicator holder here were done this way. HTH Jon |

"adjective: liberal

willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas."
Not yet a term of abuse in this country. Rod Yes, beneficial in moderation but not without a catch.. Really? I can accept your differing view Jon |

"Health and Safety shoots down entire RAF" - The headline did make me laugh though. I'm not sure whether it was Ady's or a quoted one. Last time I checked, merlin's were not powering our front line RAF defence capability |

Why not forget about B,S,W and B,S,F ect join the rest of the world [well, most of it anyway ] and go Metric. Wash your mouth out!!!! Interesting response but even Myford adopted M5, in place of 2BA and M6 and M8 capscrews in place of 1/4 and 5/16 BSF, for cost reasons before the 7 series lathes ended official production. Personally I don't see the problem and happily mix metric and imperial especially for clamping on my old entirely imperial ML7 and all-UNC imperial mill.
