Ingenious use of cheap ratchet spanner to lock and unlock tailstock!

That was so simple and its been so effective!

Hi Blue Heeler, I also have a Sieg C6, about 3 years old now, very happy with it so far. Could you tell me how you made your carriage lock please as that is something I would like to add to mine.

Thanks.

I turned up the steel part that you can see and used a button die to thread it (sorry off the top of my head I can't remember what size metric thread it was) then screwed it in where the factory hex head bolt is. Tightened it up with some vice grip pliers protecting the steel with some offcut copper sheet.
When it locked down the carriage I marked the place with a small punch where it was the place to drill for the handle.
Then unscrewed the piece and drilled it for the handle, wound the steel part back in and THEN put the handle in. This way you'll have it set just right so when you lock the carriage it will be in correct place.
You'll never look back at using the old hex method again!

Thread: Lubrication for open geared Metal Lathes

I've never had any swarf come back into the gears of the lathe. And the TAC-2 doesn't in anyway block up those little PITA brass ball oilers.

I've always kept a rolled up oiled ball of tissues in the spindle of my lathes and they push out when I push a rod through.

Sieg C6, Grizzly G0516, Hare & Forbes AL-60 Metal Lathe Modifications

Known as the Sieg C6 or the Grizzly G0516 or the Hare & Forbes AL-60 metal lathe. A look at some of the mods that I have done on this 10x22 lathe.

I know everyone has there favourite product, but CRC TAC-2 for me is just absolutely brilliant and lasts and lasts.

Really quietens down the gear noise.

Over the years I've bought these into Oz from the UK, the bloke who runs the company is excellent to deal with -

Thread: Need to drill a hole digital caliper
09/06/2019 00:28:34

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Yes, I am making some 'poor man's DRO's for the lathe'.

I bought a set of carbide drills yesterday and they made short work of drilling through.

G'day all,

I need to drill a small hole in a Chinese stainless steel digital caliper.

Whatever its made of is super hard and a drill will hardly scratch it let alone drill a hole.

Any ideas on how to do it?

Cheers,

Jim

"Vintage" as in 10 year old + printers have the best pickings IMO.

Every new generation of printer they have worked out how to put in less metal and more plastic.

You're doing a few hours on the lathe, everything is coming together and the parts are slowly building up and you're doing lots of different operations.

Then all of a sudden the lathe isn't cutting right, you check everything and then everything once again. You start to think "What the hell has happened to the lathe"?

You keep looking for what has happened and why you can't make a simple cut??????......and then you notice it.

The motor is in reverse

Love the ground rods, I've used so many of them over the years for different things (the older the printer the thicker the rods seem to be).

The motors I use for small gennys run off steam engines, but how many does a bloke need!

There's a lot of handy things to salvage from inside the common printer.
