OOps you both beat me to it.

The 6.3 x 1mm is the sherline specification for the x and y leadscrew axis.

09/02/2021 18:36:17

Pete

what does the 6.3 relate to?

09/02/2021 18:35:20

The machine is (or will be) a Sherline milling machine. I am going to use mach3 so just trying to understand how to setup motor tuning in mach3.

as a newbie to a milling machine, I am trying to find out what this means in relation to a leadscrew pitch, 6.3 x 1mm.

I think a trip to B&Q is required.

Thanks for the tips and photo's, much appreciated.

Perspex seems a good idea.

Has anyone any suggestions for an enclosure for a tabletop milling machine for example taig or sherline size. Something to be able to keep surrounding areas free from chips etc.

Thread: Advice on milling machine purchase
19/01/2021 16:17:13

I should have added that its use would only be for small projects like clocks etc.

19/01/2021 16:14:12

Hi all

At the moment I have a proxxon MF70 milling machine, which I have used with some small success to make clock wheels etc. However it has limitations so I am looking to upgrade.

Unfortunately space is limited so the smaller mini/micro machines would be better.

Preferably cnc controlled or the ability to upgrade.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thread: John Parslow skeleton clock
04/10/2019 17:36:44

Hi Russell,

Thanks for that information and I now understand how it is done.

I must also thank you for the information you gave me on another thread when I asked about turning silver steel. I purchased the inserts as you suggested and am amazed how easy they have made the task.

So thanks again for your assistance.

Although it is a few years since the last post on the subject of the Parslow skeleton clock, I hope that someone may see my post and offer some advice.

I am in the process of attempting to make this clock using the book and plans, however there seems to be a discrepency with the size of some arbours or the wheels centre holes. The plan on page D4 fig 5 says to ream centre hole on intermediate wheel 0.1875, but the section of the arbour where the wheel sits is only 0.118.

Maybe I am missing something but hope that someone can advise me on the correct action to take.

Thread: Indexable tool holders
29/09/2019 11:29:55

oops, I meant to say silver steel not stainless steel!

29/09/2019 10:43:21

Hi all. Having absolutely no engineering knowledge or background I am trying to find information on the best indexable tools and tips for my project.

So a little background first......I have a peatol/taig lathe, and am attempting to make a skeleton clock. Cutting of brass is no problem but the turning of stainless steel required for pivots is problematic.

Can anyone recommend which indexable tips are best for turning stainless steel to a fairly good finish.

Many thanks

Thank you Neil

Russsell

Thanks for the info, I will and try and find a UK supplier.

Have just set the wheel cutter up an my Taig lathe, Had to do some small alterations but nothing severe and it seems to work well.

Next thing to get is a wheel cutter, maybe from bergeon, although a bit costly.

Russell

Thanks for the information, I think my problem with turning silver steel is due to my lack of ability in ensuring that the tool is sharp enough, I have been using an indexable tool.

Have just upgraded to er16 collets and must admit I am very impressed.

Hi Michael

From what little I could see in that link, I believe that it may be the one that I have just purchased or at least one very similar. The info given has really confirmed my thoughts on how to set it up.
