Thread: Outstanding Service
22/03/2014 08:42:30

Ive had first class service from nearly all of the ME suppliers, CuP Alloys being one at the top of the list. However a materials supplier, who I wont mention, was a great disappointment, especially as they had been recommenended! Didn't really feel like they wanted to take my order, a not inconsiderable sum - not huge but not a pittance either!

Although delivery was when they said it would be, I had to phone 3 times to find out when they were taking payment and when I could expect delivery, which incidentaly was a week after I placed the order. Needless to say my business will go elsewhere from now on.

Ben

Thanks for the replies/suggestions. I'll draw up the dims I've got, all nice and neat.

It is a Bulgarian lathe, approx. 12x20, original equipment for the vessel, so around 40 year old but still all good!

The sub-table idea might be worth persuing...

Evening All,

I have access to an old but serviceable ZZM Sofia C8m lathe but no milling facility. I am looking for a cross slide with T slots. Either one already available or even a custom made one, as long as it is within reason pricewise.

I have sketches with sizes if that would help with sourcing or pricing for a custom job.

Any help gratefully received,

TIA,

Ben

Why not try a cathodic protection lump as used on boats, wired to your pipes hung in the well, it should dissolve faster then the pipes.

That would be zinc bar

The level and depth of knowledge and experience available via forums such as this one never ceases to amaze and instruct me. Thank you for the lessons!

RJW,

Good thought! Boiler was 2-3/8" dia but with the access issues I was having I am looking at going to 3-7/16".

So the motor has to either "be" the barrel or hide inside the firebox......

I tend to start building with whatever size "looks" right to find the problems then rebuild solving the problems. Weeing uphill into a hurricane is a favourite hobby of mine!

26/01/2014 21:02:38

Spent most of the day elbow deep in Meccano, got so far into a traction engine only for the flexi-plates that made up the boiler to split on me. GRRR! So I have had to order some metal ones which will be rolled to the correct curve.

Also need to source a motor, 12 volt-ish, to power said TE. Any suggestions? Needs to be powerful enough to pull some weight....i.e. Me!

It is probably 22 or 23 years since I last went to this show. I almost wish I had not gone now. It seemed very small and threadbare from how I remember it but that may well be "rose tinted memories".

However, on a positive note, I got several bargains. All the traders I spoke with were very helpful and I got some, for me, excellent details pictures on the 2" Minnie on display. Now to continue the search for a 4 jaw indy to fit the Sofia c8m..........

Hi Mr Moo, this show only started 18 years ago, i.e. "The London Model Engineers Exhibition". It was first held, quite rightly as Bazyle said, at the Lee Valley Leisure Centre, Maridian Way (Pickets Lock Lane) in Edmonton and was held there each year untill 2001. In 2002 and 2003 it was held at the Wembley Exhibiton Centre next to Wembley stadium. In 2004 it was then first held in Alexandra Palace where it has been held ever since including this last weekend, which they boast, that the show has come of age and celebrating 18 great years, on the front of thier free show guide.

The show you went to 22/3 years ago was most likely to have been the "Model Engineers Exhibition" which is the one connected with this forum and has been held at Sandown park in recent years. I can remember going to a MEX at Ally Pally once, but when I first went to any MEX's it was held in Olympia.

Regards Nick.

Hello Nick,

You're probably right, my memories are hazy to say the least!

All the best,

Ben

China, believe me I hate to be the one to say this but do a search. Google is your friend! the search function on here is proper pants but a google search will show you loads and loads of returns from this site and others covering the topic to some proper depth. I know because I am in the same boat as yourself.

Happy hunting!
